Road to Jarbidge, NV

I got to shoot a wedding in Jarbidge, Nevada and there were some pretty amazing panorama opportunities along the way. This is a 5 or 6 shot (I forgot how many actually) pano looking in the direction of Jarbidge. This scene is actually in southern Idaho past Rogerson, ID. There is still another hour and a half drive to go, and Jarbidge itself is in a rugged canyon with more vegetation. But to get there you drive through these HUGE open spaces.

I used a Nikon D800 for these shots, and when stitched together in CS6, even when flattened, makes for a file well over 1 gig!

This image really needs to be seen printed as large as it can get. The screen version doesn't show all the detail, or the scope, and its hard to get excited about it. The clouds and were really like that on the left with the sun casting shadows. It was really beautiful. There were three cars in our caravan to Jarbidge and some were wondering why I stopped and jumped out to take a bunch of pictures of nothing!

Sol Duc Falls, near the Sol Duc Hot Springs

Had a quick hike out to Sol Duc Falls during a brief stay at Lake Crescent Lodge. Love that area! This is a two minute exposure, with a brighter layer added underneath to bring out some color. It was a bright overcast day. It's a short drive and a .9 mile walk from the Sol Duc Hot Springs.

Haven't posted much lately because I've been too busy. Hopefully will get to shoot more in the next month. This is a very scenic park outside of Port Angeles, WA, near Joyce. Shot June 2011. Two minute exposure but it’s wide enough that you really can’t tell unless you look closely at the shoreline or study the creek.

Portland Island Navigation Light, Portland Island, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, B.C., Canada. Portland Island is a Provincial Marine Park close to Sidney, B.C. It’s a gorgeous island that you must boat to. We kayaked there for five days. This was a bit after sunrise and the entire island was behind me as I shot down to the light and the water. You can see the shadow of the trees on the island in the water.

Ocean froth at the pilings

Pilings at Ocean Shores, WA. I’m lately leaning much more toward black and white, but this image just didn’t seem to lend itself to that. Couldn’t get an image that I was happy with. I liked the pastel, painterly look to the color.

As I’m exploring Lightroom 3, I’m getting more and more excited about it and have found that I’m heading to Photoshop less and less. Still use it, but the adjustments in Lightroom, once you catch on to them, are great.

This is a two-image panorama from Second Beach, WA. It’s one of the most amazing coastlines on the planet, though not that easily accessible. Perhaps that’s a good thing. Two 60 second exposures stitched together in Photoshop. The final file is 36" wide and almost one gig. This small image doesn't give the full effect.

Hood Canal Floating Bridge, study II

A second look at the bridge from slightly closer. The July fog obscured the Olympic mountains behind the bridge and made it appear as if the floating bridge was the “floating bridge”.

The road through Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, is stunning! One of the most amazing roads I’ve ever been able to ride. Wonderful scenery. 180 miles of views that defy human scale. If you look closely you can see the road extend all the way back. We lucked out on the weather. This is a four-image panorama.

Suquamish, WA Pier. Had to clean up a lot of rain drops on the filter and lens, mostly in Photoshop but also while taking the shot or the whole thing would have been blurred too much. Three people asked me what was out there that I was shooting in that downpour. When I said "the pier" they looked at me as if I were a loony! It had been pouring most of the morning but had actually lightened up a bit by the time I took this particular exposure and I was able to get it without too much touching of the lens. Phew!

Ok, so... this is a lot more foo foo than I prefer, or that I normally like to show, but I showed it to some people and they liked it so I thought I'd post it. No laughing allowed! And it's a short break from my current focus on long exposure.

And to be perfectly honest I hardly had to do anything to this image. It was shot a couple years ago and I just found it in some old folders I was clearing out. The reflection is totally natural... no mirroring the sky or anything. It's not SOOC (straight out of camera) but it's actually pretty close. I reduced the clarity to get the softness, added a touch of vignetting, a slight graduated filter at the top, and I cloned out a duck that looked like a spot. That's about it. It was a beautiful day!

It was suggested to me, and I agreed, that a square crop of my original image might be interesting. I would very much like to hear what people think of this image or the one two images below.

Rialto Beach, WA. It was very foggy that day, but for some reason I didn’t haul my tripod with me, nor any of my filters. This is handheld. It finally started to clear later on, but the fog is always fun to shoot in. Would have made for a great long exposure image if I had thought ahead. Erf...
