Pro Tip: When taking long pinhole exposures of a pint of beer at a brewpub, its best to order two beers. One for the exposure, and one to consume while your waiting. Chances are you're gonna want a second beer anyway right?

Two Photographers Conversing Over Pizza And Beers

Camera: Zero Image 2000 Pinhole
Film: Fuji Neopan 100 Acros
Exposure Time: 1 Hour 6 Minutes
Location: The Pine Box - Seattle, Washington

It would be near impossible for me to measure just how influential Flickr has been to my growth as a photographer. I joined the site 4 years ago this month, and I suppose you can say time flies when your having fun. It really wasn't until I made the transition to shooting primarily film that I realized the full potential of Flickr and its film photography community. There really couldn't be a nicer more welcoming group of people on the internet than those who practice the art of recording light on film.

All of my contacts I've collected over the years have provided endless amounts of knowledge and inspiration. I can't thank you all enough for the help you've provided me along the way. Perhaps at some point in the future I'll do a post thanking individual contacts in particular, but for now I just want to thank all of you.

Beyond simply conversing with the film photography community online, I've had the pleasure of meeting a handful of people in person. I'll admit each time, the blind date aspect of the meetings have been a bit nerve wracking, to no fault of those involved of course, just sort of the nature of the beast. But, by the end of lunch/dinner all my fears have washed away, amidst a rousing conversation of photography and life in general, reaffirming my belief that film
photographers are some of the nicest people around.

The photograph above is of me and Rudy, discussing our love of photography over pizza and beers. We spent a little over three hours on the topic, and could have easily spent more had we not had work obligations in the morning. Rudy lives in Cork, Ireland by way of Visalia, California and I've had the pleasure of having dinner with him twice now while he was in Seattle on business. Stand up guy, who is quite a skilled instant film and pinhole photographer, you should check out the link to his photostream above.

Next weekend, I'll be meeting another Flickr contact for the first time as he travels north from the great state of Oregon. Later this summer, a group of Portland pinhole photographers are making the trip to the Emerald City to meet their Seattle counterparts, myself included. I'm extremely excited for both events.

Let this be an open invitation to any of my Flickr contacts - If you find yourself in Seattle and want to meet up and talk shop, I'm more than willing to accommodate if time allows.

Camera: Zero Image 2000 Pinhole
Film: Fuji Neopan 100 Acros
Exposure Time: 4 minutes 30 seconds
Location: Lake Union Park - Seattle, Washington

An exposure taken aboard the tug Arthur Foss on Worldwide Pinhole Day 2013. This was one of two sleeping quarters for the ships crew. The room was extremely tiny, which I suppose is to be expected aboard a ship. Perhaps I should tell the crew the easiest way to enlarge your space with minimal effort is to photograph it with a pinhole camera. After all, it's great at elongating everything it sees.

I urge all of you to take the time to head on over to my good friend Jana's website to see her beautiful 4x5 pinhole exposures of the Arthur Foss.

On a side note, does anyone know what might cause the well defined line down the left side of the image? Its most noticeable on the faucet. This has occured on a few of my pinhole exposures in the past and I haven't been quite sure what causes it. Perhaps my shutter opened slightly in my bag?

Camera: Zero Image 2000 Pinhole
Film: Fuji Neopan 100 Acros
Exposure Time: 2 minutes
Location: Capitol Hill - Seattle, Washington
Series: Pinhole'd Breweries and Pubs

John John's Game Room is a tiny arcade squished into a triangular shaped space on the corner of Melrose and East Olive on Capitol Hill. How they managed to to fit 25ish pinball and arcade units into the space I'm not quite sure, but I'm glad they did. While I've never been all that good at pinball... OK I'll admit I'm down right bad at it., I can hold my own when it comes to Pac-Man. So, to discover a sit down Pac-Man was located just a few blocks from my apartment I was pretty elated. Plus they serve beer? even better.

A few nights ago, I found myself with nothing to do and the house to myself. Naturally, I raided the laundry money and headed off to the arcade for a beer and a few rounds of Pac-Man. It was a bit difficult closing the shutter while playing the game. Fortunately I was able to outsmart Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde easy enough to reach over and close the shutter. Bonus image in the comment section below.

Camera: Holga 120N
Location: Olympic Sculpture Park - Seattle, WAshington

Richard Serra's Wake is a fascinating sculpture, it's seven panels inviting you to explore and experience. I've always been drawn to the way its tall steel waves engulf you as you walk amongst it's many layers.

The Holga's ability to double, or in this case 7 times expose, gave me an opportunity to explore the Wake's layers in a new light. Each exposure adding another layer to the mix, some subtle, others not so much.

Five Sequoia Trees

Camera: Holga 120N
Film: Ilford Pan F+
Location: Washington Park Arboretum - Seattle, Washington

Its officially! I've taken the plunge into home developing my black and white film. Last night, I successfully developed my first roll off film without anyone's assistance. Not gonna lie, I was a bit stressed out, and sent several text messages to a friend asking about the process before I finally decided to man up and just do it. By the time my negatives where hanging to dry I was beaming with excitement, openly wondering what I was so afraid of in the first place.

The only question is - what the hell took me so long to begin developing my own film the first place? Better late than never I suppose.

As for the image itself, its a 5 exposure Holarama of a Sequoia sempervirens more commonly known as a coastal redwood. Each exposure was shot on bulb mode for an unknown amount of time, under a half second for sure, with 12 advancing clicks between. By the end of the exposure 1 Sequia became 5, if only it was that easy to repopulate a grove of redwoods.

Camera: Zero 2000 Pinhole
Film: Ilford Delta 400
Exposure Time: 1 Hour 35 minutes
Location: South Lake Union - Seattle, Washington
Series: Pinhole'd Breweries and Pubs

This image photograph originally posted to Flickr on 10/24/2011. I've bumped it back to the front of my photostream, because it was selected as the best urban pinhole photograph at Glazers Camera 1st annual Pinhole Competition. I feel very honored to have been chosen over so many other other fantastic pinhole images. If you'd like to see them in person, the show will be up through June 9th in Glazers' Lighting Store.

Brave Horse Tavern is Tom Douglas' (Seattle's most well known restauranteur) take on a modern tavern. Situated in a renovated warehouse space, the tavern features exposed beams and brick work which are a nice tribute to the neighborhood's industrial past. The space is surprisingly large for a tavern with numerous long communal tables creating a casual feel that at peak times can feel a bit cramped.

Featuring two dozen taps, there is no shortage of delicious barley pops to choose from. Local favorites are mixed in with outstanding beers from around the country, creating quite an impressive tap list. On the food side of things the pretzels and various dipping sauces are top notch. Perhaps the best part of the whole place is the two shuffle board tables, a welcomed sight in any bar or pub. I must not be the only fan of the game though, as even on a night in the middle of the week there always seems to be a wait list to play.

Brave Horse Tavern is a bit more expensive than most of the bars and pubs I frequent around Seattle. Pints run you 6 dollars, though they are imperial pints. Higher prices aside, Brave Horse is a nice alternative to my usual watering holes, and is a welcomed addition to the South Lake Union neighborhood which has been in need of a good beer bar.

Built my first DIY pinhole camera last night just in time for World Wide Pinhole Day on Sunday. Its based on the design plans from matchboxpinhole.com, except I could't locate a matchbox so I used a Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA six-pack instead. Hence the name of the camera.

While building it I enjoyed a couple 21st Amendment Brew Free of Die IPAs. As you can see from the box, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt are pretty pumped about the camera. Jefferson and Washington have their doubts though.

Five Hundred And Sixty Nine Sunrises Ago

Camera: Zero 2000 Pinhole
Film: Kodak Portra 400
Exposure Time: 10 seconds
Location: Picture Lake - Mt. Baker, Washington State

Happy Earth Day everyone! To celebrate I thought I'd post an image from one of my favorite spots on earth (that I've been to anyway), Picture Lake on Mount Baker. Hard to believe its been exactly 1 year, 6 months, and 21 days since I made this pinhole exposures. Feels like just yesterday.

For those of you who follow along at home, this image has made an appearance in my stream before as part of my ongoing Bookmarks series.

Camera: Holga 120N
Film: Kodak Ektar 100
Location: Hoh Rain Forest - Olympic national Park, Washington State

Back to the Hoh Rain Forest again. Somewhere along the Hall of Moss Trail stands this shinny, smooth snag. Only about 30 feet of the dead tree remain standing, large swaths of its bark long gone. I'm not quite sure if the shinny, reflective coat it now wears is the result of human touch, or natural forces, but I was struck by its beauty among the otherwise matted colors of the forest.
