A handful of villagers have returned to squat at the site of their original village, which they were forcibly evicted from more than 20 years ago. The villagers would like to return to their customary land, but APP has cleared and planted it and security maintains tight control on access to the area.

The choking smog from burning peatlands as seen from our 6th floor hotel room in the city of Pekanbaru, in the Riau Province of Sumatra. The haze can be so bad from the burning forests that airline traffic is interrupted and health warnings are posted in cities hundreds of miles away.

Lafcadio in the village of Muara Merang - one of the first areas in Indonesia to gain Hutan Desa designation for surrounding forests. Hutan Desa means 'village forest' and is a status that takes areas out of corporate control and puts them into community management.

Acacia and eucalyptus pulpwood plantations like this one planted by APP, are replacing the natural rainforests of Indonesia at an alarming rate. After a great deal of effort and many, many hours of driving, riding motorcycles and walking, Lafcadio and Laurel found standing natural forest on peatlands. In the end, we were guided there by an illegal logger and as we stood at this spot chainsaws could be heard roaring in the near distance.
