I took this the night before last. Didn't take any photos tonight for an exciting reason.....

I have just ordered some lighting to start taking portraits. It's something I've shied away from because of lacking confidence and not having the right equipment. I decided to go for it and have lined up a few photo shoots with friends and family over the coming weeks!

I spent today turning my lounge into a fully functional portrait studio in readiness for the arrival of the lights. I've had to do a bit of DIY with rigging a backdrop using a massive white bed sheet.

I'm a bit nervous but excited to get cracking on!

In the old days, I'd have cropped the negative space on the right! I think it adds to the composition, so I've left it in!

I had to play with the focus and aperture on this one for a while, but I got there eventually! Very happy with the result.

I'm definitely a 'get it right in-camera' kind of guy! If you have to say to yourself 'I can fix that later in PS', you haven't nailed it! It makes the editing a much more fun process and not a long drawn out affair!

WWII British Infantry

A few months back, I took a number of photos of WWII toy soldiers in silhouette. I enjoyed it but needed to move onto something else.

I've decided to come back to it after gaining more experience in processing and lighting. I thought it would also tie in nicely with my recent dabbling with minimalism.

I hope you enjoy it.

I took a lot of chess piece photos tonight. Developed one tonight and will do the rest tomorrow.

I'm enjoying minimalism at the moment. It probably reflects in my day to day life. The simpler you make your life, the easier it is to enjoy I think.

More simple shots folks. It's been refreshing to forget about conceptual photos and shoot subjects just as they are with space surrounding them. The challenge for me lies in lighting them as best I can and experimenting with aperture. The processing is important too, of course!

In case anyone is interested, my equipment is very basic.....

- Light tent (purchased from eBay)
- 500W halogen site light (purchased from local DIY store)
- a big sheet of quality white paper as a backdrop

Oh and incase you can't see from this view, the song on the record is Edelweiss!

These are the keys to my flat. I get the 2 similar keys mixed up. I nearly always go for the wrong one first! I should put some sort of mark on one of them but that would make too much sense!?

Like my shuttlecock photo, I was tempted to crop this but the shadows add too much to the image.
