This area is one of the prime wilderness destinations in all of the Eastern Sierras. Of the many trails that begin near the town of Mammoth Lakes, the Agnew Meadows Trailhead leads hikers and backpackers to a multitude of beauty and solitude. The trailhead follows the Shadow Creek drainage, up to Shadow Lake. From there, hikers can choose to head towards Ediza Lake, Thousand Island Lake or Garnet Lake. Either of those choices will not disappoint, and will reward outdoor enthusiasts with arguably some of the most pristine vistas to be found anywhere in the wilderness.

If I could give one piece of advice, it would be; DO NOT forget mosquito repellant!
Minarets – Ediza Lake – Ansel Adams Wilderness

This is a scene I captured in 2009. Back then I processed a three-shot HDR version, which after recently reviewing, I decided that I was not happy with the final image. Back then, I had very minimal Photoshop skills, and I thought HDR would be the best way to process the shot.

As I have now developed a workflow using Adobe Raw, I decided to re-process this single image. Final tweaks were still performed in Photoshop.

A 6.5 mile hike is required to access this Sierra Wilderness gem. The destination makes the hard work worth it, as you arrive at Ediza Lake, idyllically nestled below Mt. Ritter, Mt. Banner and The Minarets.

Virgin River Narrows – Zion National Park - Utah

Many of my favorite hikes are located in Utah. The Virgin River Narrows hike is no exception. The trail leads hikers through the Virgin River, which requires one to hike in water. Water levels can reach up to at least three feet in places, so this can be a great hike to do in the warmer summer months. Much of the river’s water has a swift moving current; however I found this spot along the trail where the water was calm.

I composed this scene to convey a sense of calm and peacefulness. I liked the contrast of the different elements including canyon wall, boulders, tree and calm water.

Bullfrog Lake - Kearsarge Pass - Kings Canyon National Park

As I have not taken any new images that I have been satisfied with for a while, I decided to post a version of a scene captured a couple of years ago. That image did not include Mt. Brewer, so using my new panorama software; I stitched two separate images together to create this view. Now I am able to post this scene more closely to the way it was witnessed. The previous post of this scene was also processed using Photomatix HDR; however once these two separate shots were stitched, I processed the final image as a single raw file.

Another reason I wanted to post a second version of this image, is because this is one of my favorite captures from one of my favorite backpacking trips. Standing above Bullfrog Lake taking in this sunrise view was one of my most memorable rewards.

The Palisades of Upper Dusy Basin and Kings Canyon National Park is one reward experienced after hiking the 6-mile trail, which starts at the South Lake Trailhead. After 3.5 miles, the real work begins as you start the climb up switchbacks to 11,960 ft Bishop Pass. Once at the top, catch your breath before the mile or so descent to Second Lake. Other rewards include solitude, and a nightly serenade, courtesy of the resident coyotes.

North Palisade 14,242 ft; Starlight Peak 14,200 ft; Thunderbolt Peak 14,003 ft; Mt. Winchell 13,775 ft; Mt. Agassiz 13,893 ft; Isosceles Peak 11,414 ft; Columbine Peak 12,652 ft

Note: To give a sense of scale, I placed a "note box" around my tent.

This past Labor Day Weekend, my friend and co-worker Sherpa Doug decided to hike the Mt. Dana Trail. This trailhead is located by the east entrance station to Yosemite National Park. Mt. Dana is the second highest peak in the park, just 60 feet lower than Mt. Lyell. To be a little more adventurous, and for me to capture a sunrise image, we decided to camp overnight in the sub-zero temps. We set up camp on the Dana Plateau, from where this image was taken.

For perspective, the little blue jewel on the right is Saddlebag Lake. The trail that begins here leads hikers to the 20-Lakes Basin Area and on to popular Shamrock Lake.

Mobius Arch - Whitney Portal - Alabama Hills

I arrived in Lone Pine, CA at about 5:00 p.m. planning to do a little hiking before attempting some late night arch shooting. Upon noticing the sun dipping below a bank of clouds, I quickly scampered down the trail to the most photographed arch in the area, and set up. I captured several different views as the sun was setting , but for now I am content to post this take.

Framed within the left third of the arch window is Lone Pine Peak. Currently at an elevation of 14, 404 ft, Mt. Whitney is the tallest peak in the Lower 48, and is seen here framed in the right third of the arch window.

Virgin River Narrows - Zion National Park - Utah

As I was about to begin hiking the Virgin Narrows Trail, I turned around to see the sunrise lighting up the trailhead canyon wall. Although I boosted saturation and contrast later in Photoshop, the wall appeared as if it were actually turning to gold, and the resulting image is an accurate representation of this scene.

The next image I post, will be from my next trip. I am very excited about my future photo shoot plans, and who knows what they will bring. For now, I am planning a short break, as I attempt to complete my first book, prepare to move and oh, let's not forget taxes!

Spooky Gulch - Utah

Possibly, my favorite subject of all...Slot canyons!! Hiking through the dimly lit passages towards the light, often having to remove a backpack and walk sideways to squeez through. Turning each corner, and another wonder is revealed.
This is Spooky Gulch, located in the Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch. From Escalante, Utah; drive down the Hole in the Rock Road, to the many wonders that await.

I awoke at 6:30am, last Sunday morning, and went to set up for a sunrise shot, only to find a row of photographers waiting to capture an image of what is arguably one of the most photographed scenes in the Sierras...Back to that later.

That evening before, I decided to take a shot at capturing this silent, less famous sentinel, that just happens to sit next to the so popular one.

Now I will never forget mighty Mt. Morrison, which also stands as a guardian over this lake. And now I understand why it is also known as, "The Great White Fang".

The Great White Fang

I awoke at 6:30am, last Sunday morning, and went to set up for a sunrise shot, only to find a row of photographers waiting to capture an image of what is arguably one of the most photographed scenes in the Sierras...Back to that later.

That evening before, I decided to take a shot at capturing this silent, less famous sentinel, that just happens to sit next to the so popular one.

Now I will never forget mighty Mt. Morrison, which also stands as a guardian over this lake. And now I understand why it is also known as, "The Great White Fang".

Dusy Basin Sunset

The glowing Sierra sunset was followed by yet another unexpected wonder, as a lone coyote appeared to serenade the dozen or so campers all throughout the night. Or perhaps; just as any living creature that lives in this magical place may rightfully do; the coyote was sounding out a friendly reminder...

"This is my home, and I will defend it".
