Pikes Peak via cogs

So here is the actual cograil…thing…descending Pikes Peak. As you can see, it's very crowded on the inside. That is one of the reasons why I opted to drive. Another reason is they don't stop at the top for very long. Another reason is it costs a king's ransom (for a poor graduate student). I bet it was beautiful and stress-free though. A warm summer's day

This was a warm day in Boulder not too long ago. Well, it's like 6 miles from downtown Boulder, at Walden Pond's boardwalks. However, the "pond" wasn't very wet due to the blasted drought!

Anyway, it's cold in Lincoln, NE these days, and cold and rainy in Boulder, CO. So I'm missing the warmth.

A-maze-ing

This is the corn maze (or maize) at the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. This was my first visit to the Chatfield gardens and I wasn't very impressed. I don't know the idea behind Chatfield; there wasn't much there except a lot of space. And the corn maze was fun for awhile, but…well…you should go and see for yourself. There were a bunch of cheaters, too, going through the corn rather than getting your money's worth. Seriously, if you're going to pay to walk a maze, why would you cheat?

Anyway, I'm not too keen on coming back to the Chatfield gardens. I'll stick to the York Street gardens.

Too bad that experience costs ~$300 per person. That's almost as expensive as going up Pikes Peak on the Cog Railway!

There's no message here. I sometimes put signs in my pictures that relay a message given some kind of context. For example, I once put my ladyfriend in front of a "ONE WAY" sign and made her point at herself with both thumbs. In the case of this photo, I just thought the red sign contrasted pretty well with the clouds and the greenish/brownish things, not that "One shouldn't venture into the mountains."

This is up at the Brainard Lake Recreation Area somewhere…high. Here we are on the way to Lake Isabelle on a beautiful *muffled muffled* day. I saw a moose earlier, I remember that!

P.S. If you think this picture is crooked, it's totally my fault. For some reason every orientation I tried makes it look crooked. And I haven't been drinking. I just can't make this look right to me.

A stop on the way up

It's a lot easier driving up Pikes Peak than it is going down. When you go down you need to control all that potential energy so as not to accelerate. You can do this by downshifting into a low gear or by riding your brakes. If you ride your brakes then you'll have no brakes by the end of it. They even have people stop you halfway down to check the temperature of the brake pads or something. I was good to go since I put my car in 1st and revved to > 4000 rpm. My brakes were cool but my engine smelled like burning.

Also this is the first time I've used a Lightroom Preset. I got this one free from Trey Ratcliff's website. He's selling them in packages but offered Package 3 for free with a special code you get from his Newsletter.

And another thing: I tried my luck at editing together a bunch of clips I took in Colorado Springs over Labor Day weekend (with a few other video clips from other times) and even though it's my first attempt I'm rather proud of it. How close can you get to the hot-air balloons at the Colorado Balloon Classic? You can go right up the basket and talk to the pilots, actually. I didn't because I wanted to see the fire. And that fire is hot!

I drove up Pikes Peak in my car. I could have taken this train thing but it cost $35…per person. Sorry, I should have said "per person!!!!" However, I bet it would have been a lot less stressful on my car and a lot more relaxing. Maybe I'll come back in the winter. The only thing is you don't get very long at the top when you take the railway. Something like 30 or 45 minutes. By car, we stayed up there for a couple of hours.

This was the Long Lake/Jean Lunnings Loop/Isabelle Lake (or something) trail. It was the first time I'd been on this trail. I liked it. It was pretty easy but it was beautiful. There's nothing worse than hiking a hard trail and seeing nothing but rocks…that's just dumb.

This also marks a small return back to HDR. I thought, why not give it another go (on my awesome new Macbook Pro). It was fast!

Wishing I had a neutral density filter for my 18-200. I had to close the aperture and go to iso Low in order to get an exposure long enough to blur the water.

Hope you have your solar viewing glasses from the solar eclipse a few weeks ago. On January 5, 2012 at around 5 PM CST, Venus will pass in front of the sun. It won't be nearly as cool as a solar eclipse, but it's far more rare. The next time this will happen will be in 2117, or something like that.

Get out and see it so you can tell your grandkids one day.

This picture is from Folsom Field. I knew that I wouldn't be able to take any pictures that were very compelling or that were different than the hundreds of other photographers that were there, so I started taking people shots while they were preoccupied.
