The palaces of Nature, whose vast walls
Have pinnacled in clouds their snowy scalps,
And throned Eternity in icy halls
Of cold sublimity, where forms and falls
The avalanche – the thunderbolt of snow!
All that expands the spirit, yet appalls,
Gather around these summits, as to show
How Earth may pierce to Heaven, yet leave vain man below.
Lord Byron, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Canto III (1816), line 590

Taken from Hammond Lake in Weed, CA. 4 images stitched together to create this vertical image.
I'm still out on the road and leaving Los Angeles tomorrow. Guess where I'm heading next? It starts with 'Thousand'... Did you know there's a new moon in a couple days?
Looking forward to catching up with ALL your latest when I return in a week or so! Hope you are all doing well!
The Mask and the Mirror

It is important we understand how we relate to our own environment. The wilderness is the canvas on which we sketch ourselves and society often reflects its nature. Therefore, a community more truly reveals what is concealed. For some, the mirror is the door through which the soul frees itself by passing. For others, the pursuit of personal excellence is likened to polishing the mirror of the soul. What is concealed and what is revealed? What is the mask and what the mirror?

-------------------
Entry for Astronomy Photographer of the Year:
This is a single exposure image.
The Milky Way framed by light-painted arches.
Taken at Double Arch in Arches National Park, Utah, USA
-------------------
The beginning of the finale, or the Ninth Movement, is one of Mother Nature’s best creations in her Western desert repertoire. Like a classical concerto movement, the Milky Way performed her way across the horizon, and executed a perfect visual crescendo for the galaxy’s orchestra we cannot hear.
Aeon Rising shows a possible ending of an eternity or the beginning of a time. Plato used the term aeon to denote the eternal world of ideas, which he conceived, was "behind" the perceived world. Likewise, we may only see the arched shadows projected on its wall in this photo; but if we free ourselves from our own confines, we may see the form of true reality, rather than mere shadows.

Captured is the glowing presence of newborn light as he crowns just below the desert floor. For an instant, the surface of the earth is neither completely lit nor completely dark. And in a moment, terrestrial life will fade away and the slow inevitable drift of their movements out of the past will fade into the unknown future.
The Arch in Allure of World’s carries a significant symbolic impact just by standing there. But the desert archway has a mission greater than being visually affecting. Its shape and monumental size suggest movement through time and space, and invite inquiry into the complex, fascinating stories of human expansion. It typifies the spirit of those seeking new frontiers within the confines of earth.
Between the Shadows

By the light of the silvery moon, figures dance “between the shadows”, and cast two-dimensional silhouettes against Mono Lake’s Tufa’s. The shadow plays offer a form of storytelling throughout the night by creating the illusion of moving images and personifying everything we may refuse to acknowledge about ourselves. Perhaps this is why in the 1860s, Mark Twain found the lake to be a "lifeless, treeless, hideous desert... the loneliest place on earth." On this full moon night, the quiet solitude inspired us to capture the night sky’s attempts to brush the earth, and connect us to our own shadows.
A Shadows Nemesis

California recently announced the permanent closure of 70 state parks beginning next summer. On the chopping block is the Mono Lake Tufa State Park, located near Lee Vining, CA., and one of the oldest lakes in North America (at least 760,000 years old). We were hopeful for a secluded evening to capture a rising full moon beneath the stars. Our nemesis that night was the shadows cast by the bright light of the lady eagerly rising at 7:34pm, and the dozens of other photographers eagerly trying to stake their positions along the trail. The eerie figurines called Tufa’s, jetting from the salty floors and casting reflections off the shoreline, not only made an interesting composition for this shot, but gave the viewer the sense of an ecosystem struggling for survival. The entire night was still except for the water rhythmically slapping the shoreline, mosquitoes buzzing for a bite, or the occasional click of the timed shutter, patiently capturing what the eye cannot see. This view was created from 115 exposures.

I also created a time-lapse video from this night entitled, 'Between the Shadows.' To see it, click HERE.
I started shooting around 9:30 pm and created this image from 150 exposures. During this overnight shoot, I captured my first Iridium Flare. An Iridium (or satellite) flare, is the phenomenon caused by reflective surfaces on satellites (such as antennas or solar panels), appearing as a brief, but bright "flare" in the night sky.

I also created a time-lapse video from this night entitled, 'Between the Shadows.' To see it, click HERE

Got up at 3:45am to capture a sunrise at Mesa Arch in Cayonlands National Park. When I arrived in the pitch black, there were already 3 people there. By the time the sun had started to rise, there were 25 people there. I know there's thousands of these images out there, but I would still recommend the experience of seeing this arch transform into the orange glow you see here.

Thanks for having a look and wishing you all a great week!
Tea Leaf Paradox

Horseshoe Bend is named for the horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River seen here from its lookout point. Naturally, the waveform of a river is constantly changing and the phenomenon of the “tea leaf paradox” is used to explain the formation of this riverbank. The processes in which greater curvature results in more and more erosion of the bank, is caused by faster flowing water in the inside of the bend and slower moving water on the outside. Like tea leaves in a cup after being stirred, sediment migrates to the center and bottom of the bend from its spiral force, leaving the outside of the bend unprotected and therefore vulnerable to faster erosion, thus creating a loop.

After hiking up to Delicate Arch I realized that I had an hour or so to spare until the Milky Way would rise. I set my camera up, sat back, relaxed, stared up at the sky, and let the camera do all the work for me. This was made from 100 images, manually stacked in PS. The faint, blurred light in the lower left portion of the image is the Milky Way rising around 1am.

Hope everyone had some amazing light this weekend... while my camera is still being serviced. *tear*

After traveling through the Lower Antelope Canyon and paying $50 for permits, photographers pass (with an extra hour), and whatever else they charge, a freak gust of wind swept through the canyon and my lens inhaled huge chunks of sand. I feel so lonely without my camera.... but luckily I still have thousands of pictures to go through while my equipment is being serviced. This was an amazing place to wind myself through and I happened to meet Art Escobado while waiting for the sun beams to burst through (more on that later).

It's really hard to get a horrible photo of this place as every corner you turn is another comp that looks breathtaking. Special thanks to Jean Day for giving me the low down of the 'how's' and 'where' to shoot and get to here. Very much appreciated, Jean!!!

According to legend, a band of broomtails was left corralled on the Point. The gate was supposedly left open so the horses could return to the open range. For some unknown reason, the mustangs remained on the Point. There they died of thirst within sight of the Colorado River, 2,000 feet below.
