This ravine is right across the street from me.........I can't bear the thought of it becoming concrete.

If you would, please consider signing to petition to stop the condo development and save the Glen Davis Ravine.

Are we letting more of our history slip away?

This stretch of historic Kingston Road may be wounded yet again, tearing down to build new condos, paving a ravine in the process.

".......several small villages grew up, including two small outposts in the eastern part of York Township. Belmond was located at the corner of Kingston Rd and Main Street, while Norway was nearby at the intersection of Kingston Rd with Woodbine Ave. James Smith, who owned land where Kingston Rd crossed Woodbine Ave, operated a toll gate there. The toll was ostensibly for the upkeep of Kingston Road. There was also a sawmill; giving us a clue as to why the area was called Norway.... York township was heavily forested then with a variety of the Scots Pines referred to colloquially as Norway Pines. The unincorporated Village of Norway grew up around the sawmill and the toll gate. Of course a tavern was soon to follow. The Gazetteer of British North America, 1837 lists Norway as “… a post-village in York County, 4½ miles from Toronto. It contains one store, one hotel and a brewery. Pop. 80.”

"The Ashbridge family was one of the founding families of Toronto (formerly York); they immigrated to York from Pennsylvania in 1793. They are also the only Toronto family to occupy their land continuously for 200 years. Two acres of the original homestead and house have been preserved to tell their story.

The oldest house remaining on the site, the Jesse Ashbridge House was built in 1854. In 1972, the last remaining Ashbridges – Dorothy Bullen and her sister Elizabeth Burton – generously donated the two houses, several outbuildings, the surrounding property containing beautiful gardens, and a significant collection to the Ontario Heritage Trust in recognition of the historical significance of the site."

The house was built in 1901/02 by Kew Williams, whose father Joseph owned Kew Gardens. Its most noticeable features are the corner tower and circular verandah, typical of the Queen Anne style. Unlike most of the houses in the area, which are made of brick or wood, the cottage is built of stone. On the south face of the house, you can see the contrast between the grey Kingston stone on the first storey and the upper storey of Port Credit stone, which has weathered to a brown colour.

The Kew Williams family lived in this house until the park was sold to the city in 1907. A succession of gardeners lived in the cottage until 2002. Since then, the Gardener's Cottage has been a popular venue for art shows and community events.
