I've always believed a city transforms at night. Seville was no exception. While walking along the Guadalquivir River, the illuminated paths were as colorful as the vibrant locals. A friend and I were lured into a small bar because we heard acoustic guitar music. When we walked in, we found a real treat. People of all ages and skill levels were dancing flamenco, the dance native to Seville, with such a fiery passion I had never seen before. I witnessed – nay, experienced – a true taste of local culture.

I'm taking a photo class here in Barcelona, and I'm learning so much already about light and more features on my SLR camera.

My class went on a walking tour down the Passeig de Grácia, the most famous shopping street in Barcelona. We made a stop at a building with impressive Catalan architecture: intricate details and royal ceilings. A toy store looked like a palace. This was taken on the rooftop, and the way the building was made created an impossible silence on one of the busiest and bustling streets of the city.

On my first weekend in Barcelona, it was a rainy day on Saturday. But I wasn't going to let that ruin my fun. After about a week and a half of being in the city, it was about time to see some Gaudí. So a friend and I took an umbrella and set off.

No 500-piece puzzles for us. I think living in Barcelona redefines the boring "rainy day."

Cookie Dough Balls

I didn't have a meal plan this semester at college. So, as a result, I had to learn to cook. Before this year, I had never even cooked pasta or turned an oven on.

Look at me now.

I started slow, with baby steps. First I started with my strong suit: eggs. Then I started making fancier breakfasts on the stove, the only cooking technology I was comfortable with besides the microwave.

Slowly, I began to use an oven.

Then I even cooked meat.

Now, this is the first time I made baked goods. I was cooking lemon sugar cookies with lemon cream cheese icing. I added some coconut for my own touch. I found the recipe on Pinterest, but you can find the recipe here: luluthebaker.blogspot.com/2010/02/lemon-sugar-cookies-wit...

And if you haven't done anything like this before, go on - try it! It only took me 19 years to start, but now cooking/baking is one of my favorite hobbies! The best part is, because I've been so deprived of this art, it's fun to try something completely new every time I make something. It doesn't get boring.

If you look at this photo long enough, it's almost like an optical illusion. The water seems to be moving.

Israeli Woman in the Market

On my Birthright trip to Israel, one of the best places to explore photographic opportunities was the market. This shuk in the Carmel region of Tel Aviv was a playground of spices, exotic fruits and colorful characters.

We were all squished together down the narrow walkway of vendors and customers. It took more than 15 minutes just to push my way through the crowd to find the exit.

I was snapping away when I saw this woman taking pleasure in one of the most popular leisurely activities in Israel: smoking.

D.A.R.E. and G.R.A.D.E. that we took in elementary school are obviously not present in this part of the Middle East.

Israelis are smokers. It's their favorite pastime.

In all the chaos, this woman took a moment to relax and forget about her surroundings.

If I took any photo on my trip that portrays the typical Israeli woman, it's this one.

At Shvil Hasalat on the Gaza Border, my Birthright trip visited a quaint farm where we picked carrots, taste-tested tomatoes, cucumbers and even edible flowers. Passing by, there was a patch of wilting sunflowers. I have always felt that one sunflower is beautiful on its own, but together, a collection of sunflowers make a statement. It was interesting that even on their death[bed of flowers], pun intended, a statement is still being made. There's almost a human-like quality here, especially to the sunflower facing the camera, and there is something to be said, even in death.

The Israeli desert proved to be a real wonderland as I explored new techniques with my camera. The nature surrounding us was full of magnificent flora and fauna, as well as great wildlife.

I saw this bearded dragon up close and personal. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it running on all fours, but as far as this stationary shot goes, I was very pleased with my camera's ability to capture this little guy with such great precision.

This was by far the most delicious thing I ate during my 10-day stay in Israel.

Some friends and I took a shopping break from the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv in search of some local Israeli specialties.

Well, we definitely found them.

At this whole-in-the-wall type of joint, there were no tourists eating here. I can't even remember the name of this small food place because it was in Hebrew. The people serving the food barely spoke English themselves. That's how authentic it was.

But it didn't matter. A few Israelis ordering saw that us Americans stuck out like a sore thumb and recommended a sandwich called a Sabich.

After endless falafels, we decided to try it.

It was similar to its cousin, but instead of falafel (fried chickpea) balls, it was stuffed with succulent eggplant, melt-in-your-mouth potato and a brown hard-boiled egg. Vegetables and special sauces completed this creation and made it out of this world.

Sometimes you do find what you're looking for when you wander off the beaten path.
