The original photo seem to have been shot from a slightly higher vantage point - a ladder perhaps? - but lines up well enough.

Chief Sealth at Tilicum Place. Can really see how the fountain is different in this one - the cut-out of the original fountain shape doesn't match the current one at all! This one took a steady hand and quite a few tries to get him lined up with the hole.

Tricky lighting here; the photo in the foreground was really dark while the background was very bright. I ended up taking two bracketed shots (one dark, one bright) and merged them in Photomatix Essentials (HDR software) to avoid having a background that's completely blown out. The shots were taken hand-held, and don't line up exactly, so that adds some extra fuzzyness to the background.

Another place where lighting was a pain to deal with; since this corner is mostly in shade, the cut-out photo ended up being dark, while the buildings in the back were really bright. I ended up taking a RAW image and using photomatix to try and even the bright/dark out somewhat. It works ok, but the quality is grainy.

Fun with cut-out photos. The parapet with "Supply Laundry Co" has been removed from the building, but otherwise it's the same as it was in the photo. And the chimney's still there!

The tree cover made this a tricky location to do anything with - I gave up trying to line up the building to the right (The Interurban Building) with the photo, and just cut out the streetcar to add it back in - leaving the sinking ship garage (former location of The Seattle Hotel) visible in the background.

First and Main has changed completely since the original photo was taken - everything in the original must have been destroyed in the 1889 Great Fire.

Chief Sealth at Tilicum Place. The fountain has changed a bit over time - seems it used to be on a traffic island on its own, now its part of a pedestrian plaza.

After a bit of photo detective work, I figured out where this photo was taken; and on a recent (rare!) sunny day, headed off to get a 'today' shot.

Original photo seems to have been taken at the overlook park-let at 5th Ave N and Lynn St on Queen Anne - can see this on Google maps.

This photo is almost an exact match with the original - several landmarks line up perfectly.

For extra fun, visit this page, where you can view the two images aligned, zoom in, and compare past with present. (Chrome and Firefox only at the moment - applet is a work in progress.)
