The wind was whipping madly, a weathered sign banged loudly on rusty chains and tumbleweeds spun wildly down the road (it's true; there really were tumbleweeds)!<br /> <br /> If you believe every thing you read on <b><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Valley_Junction,_California" rel="nofollow">Wikipedia</a></b> you'd be worried at about right now as it will tell you there isn't a gas station in Death Valley Junction. Good thing there <i>was</i> a station; but it came at a price! I gasped when I saw the sign: $4.38 / gallon! But I sucked it up and paid a princely sum to fill my tank. It just isn't a good idea to be <i>'running on empty'</i> in the Mojave Desert! <br /> <br /> Since February, gas prices have skyrocketed. I've paid much more for a gallon of gas than I did in Death Valley Junction. In fact, the price I paid in Big Sur in April was the most I've ever paid for gas. I paid a whopping $5.49 / gallon!! *gasp*<br /> <br /> I really wish that I had arrived at this junction back in its hey day, when that Chevron gas pump (image in comments) was shiny and sparkly ... and dispensing gas for only .44¢ / gallon ... and the attendant out there shooting the breeze with me ... washing my windshield and checking my oil.
