365::274 - A Tale Of Two Cities

Almost certainly the last picture I'll get of this wall.

Story in the local newsrag says the city put aside $90,000 for the demolition of just one building. The low bid was $23,942, so they asked Clearview Grinding if they'd do the works for the originally budgeted $90K. Of course they said 'sure'!

"[Councilman Mike] Pearce said it was important for the city to level the site in order to help encourage development in a key area of the city's downtown core, as well as to keep Penticton looking clean and livable.

Pearce said in the short term he expects council will probably designate the spot for parking, but in the long term, who knows?"

Yeah...brilliant foresight here Mike. Maybe you should phone up Edmonton council and see how well all the parking lots are encouraging development there. Maybe you should have looked directly across the road where there's already A GIANT BLOODY PARKING LOT!

Although a few species of trees have fully and partially turned, as you can see here, most are still quite green. This is the Duncan Avenue side of Leir House.

Also, this is the end of the line for me. Flying out to Edmonton tomorrow, so probably just a quick shot from the airport, or perhaps a quick shot in Edmonton before midnight. Either way, I've had a great year here, and it's been a blast meeting and shooting with all you great Okanagan photographers. Have a good one, and we'll see you around ;)

This Volvo excavator is sitting on the remains of the Budd Clarke building, the one with all the graffiti. I wasn't the only one who stopped to watch them work a bit. They were clearing debris out of Nanaimo Hall, which will likely come down tomorrow or perhaps Friday. The other building (left out of frame) is still standing, but is slated for demo as well. One out of three down...

Well, what can I say. In 10 days I'll be leaving Penticton for Edmonton once again. I'll be out there for at least a couple months, if not the next few years. Just having no luck finding a permanent job here so I have to go where they'll hire almost any moron with almost no experience. Definitely sad to be going, as I very much wanted to stay in BC but I'm unsure what else to do. I don't want to spend another winter up at the ski hill; the work is fun but there's no money in it. Besides I really don't want to settle for less than putting this new license to work.

On the positive side, it will be nice to see my friends again, and I do have family and my son there. Also, almost fittingly, it means I will close out this 365 shooting architecture and skylines in Edmonton, which is what attracted me to start shooting seriously in the first place almost 16 months ago.

I guess, once again, BC just doesn't seem to want me living here :(
