Having hosted an execution place and the monks who are its namesake nowadays to touch upon a few of its functions throughout history, several hundred metres off the coast of Trondheim lies Munkholmen - the Monk's Isle.

The fortress built in the period 1658-1661 and closed down in 1893 provided the German occupiers during World War II with a means to provide the "DORA" submarine bases located in the city's harbour with an extra line of anti-aircraft defence. Six flak cannons were placed in the isle's fortifications, only to be torn down following the end of the war.

A single 105mm SKC/32 was restored to its turret in 2006.

Covering nigh on a square kilometre, this wandering dune is one of the few left to nature by the Danish government. Areas like these posed a prevalent problem for the population in the 16th and 17th century, driving them back from the coast.

From 1857 onward, plantations of dune grass and conifers were started to hem in the sands; Råbjerg Mile was left untouched, however, and has since shifted as far as 18 metres annually.

Though dune drifts are no longer an issue, much of the western shore of Northern Jutland is slowly but surely being lost to the sea.
