They don't come more rustic than this - a timber fingerpost, aging in the hedgerow - below Rackham Hill on the South Downs.

British Transport Commission - Passenger Transport in Glasgow & District - plan of existing stations at Queen St and Buchanan Street, Glasgow, 1951

One of the plans from the 1951 BTC Report into Passenger Transport in Glasgow & District - which never happened - was a proposal to redevelop as a single station the existing north-side stations of Queen St and Buchanan Street. As it was Queen St survived and Buchanan Street didn't. This plan shows both stations and their relationship.

The British Transport Commission had a very strong and thoughtful house style - or corporate identity that had been developed in the early '50s and became based on a strong use of ruled borders, printers flowers, simple typefaces (not standardised as such) and interesting colours. Much of the work was undertaken at the behest, I suspect, of Christian Barman at Monotype with B E Smith playing a role.

Ah the new Leeds station - the reconstruction of the once separate City and Central stations (that forced the closure of the latter) and that was seen to focus services of a much reduced post-Beeching local network into one station. It had some merit - but some flaws. The architecture - especially of "City House", the tower block that towered above the station (and that helped fund it) was grim - and the station interior, in time, echoed it. Then, when rail traffic began to grow int he '80s and '90s the slimmer station wasn't big enough - so it was rebuilt again - and probably will need to be again!
