Kaneiji Temple was established in 1625 to protect Edo Castle, the Shogun's seat, from evil and from fire, and was the family temple of the ruling Tokugawa clan. The name Kanei (ji means 'temple') simply comes from the name of the era, in which era's second year it was built.

4 of the 50 large copper lanterns offered by daimyo (feudal lords) during the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Designated as national treasures, they are used in religious ceremonies for purification and for sacred fires.

At Senso-ji temple precincts, this gate is well-known by the large red lantern. The kanji letters (Chinese characters) written in the lantern says "Kaminari-mon." "Kaminari" means thunder, and "mon" means gate in Japanese.
The large lantern hanging in the center of the gate is a restoration, which was made possible by a donation from the late Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of the Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (known as Panasonic). It was purchased in August 2003 in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the start of the Edo period. The lantern is 4 meters tall, 3.4 meters in circumference and weighs 670 kg.
Kaminari-mon houses a pair of ferocious protective deitlies; Fujin, the god of wind, on the rightl and Raijin, the god of thunder, on the left.

Tori no Ichi Fair (open-air market) is a famous annual event in November on the day of the Tori (Rooster) in Chinese calendar and this event has continued to today since the Edo period.

A little further on, between the Ueno Royal Museum and the Keisei Railway Line's Ueno Station entrance is a massive statue of Saigo Takamori. He is the focus of the film The Last Samurai. It was here in Ueno park on May 15, 1868, that Saigo led the imperial troops against the last of the old feudal Bakufu forces and defeated them. Incidentally, the size of the statue no doubt reflects the fact that, especially for Japanese of the day, Saigo was a physically huge character at 180cm (6 ft) tall and very stockily built.

There are 50 large copper lanterns, many of them lining the path approaching the shrine. Each of these lanterns were made as offerings by daimyo(feudal lords) making their official visits. If you look carefully at the base of each lantern, you will see the name of the daimyo who donated the lantern. The copper lanterns aer not used for lighting, but are instead used as part of the religious ceremonies (purification and for sacred fires). The Ueno lanterns are a little unusual since most Toshugu lanterns are carved from stone.

Ueno Toshogu Shrine
The name "Toshogu" is a royal title. Literally translated, Toshogu means "Light of the East" or "Sun god of the east". Toshogu shrines were built accordingly throughout the country, often adjoining important temples or sites that had a family or personal connection with Tokugawa Ieyasu. There are about 200 Toshogu shrines in Japan, each built to enshrine Ieyasu as a deity. By the time the Ueno Toshogu in Tokyo was re-built in 1651 it could be said that it was for the "convenience" of the daimyo(feudal lords), who under the sankin-kotai system were by now required to spend 6 months of each year (or alternate periods for some daimyo) in Edo, and expected to pay homage to the founder of the regime.
