This old building stands with a few panes of glass intact as the grass encroaches and the wind howls. The whole area contains these homes that progress and mechinization rendered obsolete.

Celebrated Independence Day with my neighbhor, her extended family, mi ahijados, and their sisters and brothers. Once again we had a plethora of bottle rockets, not enough lighters, and a great deal of fun.

Spotted a bald eagle perched on a tree outside of Orondo. He was relaxing on the branch and overlooking the Columbia River, perhaps looking for a fish to grab.

On perhaps the wrong side of the railroad tracks, this old tree, flanked by discarded pallet boards and hay bales, stands defiant. Perhaps its a metaphor to never quit.

A row of smudge pots in the orchard makes for an spooky Halloween feel in a local orchard. The cold winter nights necessitated there use in order to protect the trees. (Mattawa, Grant County, Washington State)

A smudge pot (also known as a choofa or orchard heater) is an oil-burning device used to prevent frost on fruit trees. Condensation of water vapor on particulate soot prevents condensation on plants and raises air temperature very slightly. Usually a smudge pot has a large round base with a chimney coming out of the middle of the base. The smudge pot is placed between trees in an orchard, allowing the heat and smoke from the burning oil to prevent the accumulation of frost on the fruit of the grove. Smudge pots were developed after a disastrous freeze in Southern California in January 1913 wiped out a whole crop. (Wikipedia)

Spent time looking for ducks that we did not find as we enjoyed our visit to the westside as we cheered Wahluke to the state championship in soccer. Mi ahijado shows first place for Wahluke.

In 1886, Father Etienne de Rouge, S.J., a French nobleman and Jesuit priest, founded St. Mary’s Mission in hopes of bringing Catholicism to the Okanogan and Chelan tribes. Today the mission is a mix of old and new buildings including the Paschal Sherman Indian School built in 2005. Named after an original scholar, and run by the Colville Tribe, it is the state's only Indian boarding school. The church is still an active Catholic church with lush gardens and original French altars. Nearby is the Omak Longhouse, a tribal meeting space. (Courtesy of the State of Washington)

This shot shows a couple of mi ahijados. The older one Carlos is the first cousin of the Jesus. I am the Padrino of both and Jesus' brother Ricky, and their cousin Eduardo as well. We are celebrating the babyshower of Jesus' sister in a crowded home and eating homemade posole.
