Kilimanjaro Porter in Mawenzi (at 5000 metres)

@PAkDocK / www.pakdock.com posted a photo:

Same situation, same place, but at 5000 metres above sea level, where the oxygen in the air is the half. Temperature was about 5ºC, and the porters carry the weight at theirs heads. This image was taken in the Saddle, between Mawenzi and Kilimanjaro.

Porters are often impoverished Tanzanians who depend on this labor-intensive employment in order to feed themselves and their families. They are usually severely underpaid and many climb Kilimanjaro without adequate clothing, footwear, or equipment. Like climbers, porters suffer from malaria, altitude sickness, hypothermia, snow blindness, and frostbite. They are also exposed for injuries in knees and back. In fact, some porters have died of hypothermia when a late season storm has hit Mount Kilimanjaro.

Better On Black and Large

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
