So many common names for this lovely flower...in addition to Squarehead, it is also known as Pinelands Ginseng, Nerve Ray and Tetragonia.

Another other-worldly plant found in the bog is the Sundew...the dew-like drops on it's tentacles are actually sticky gel it uses to trap insects to digest...

I can't believe how things work out sometimes, like this little story from my day off, today...as I always do at the end of April, I made the 50 mile trip up to Splinter Hill Bog recently, expecting the exquisite Spreading Pagonia Orchids to be in bloom...they weren't, so I awoke this morning wanting to make the return trip up to the Bog, but really didn't feel up to the drive, so I decided to hike locally...all morning, I thought of the Spreading Pagonias and wished I'd felt like going up there...the weekend weather looks 'iffy' and I might not get to see them this season at all...my shock and surprise was over the top as I actually found three Spreading Pagonia blooms while hiking the local Jeff Friend Trail near Fort Morgan this morning! I've NEVER seen them anywhere except Splinter Hill, and certainly not away from a bog! It truly took awhile for me to believe what I was seeing...and start snapping...LOL

Regular visitors to my stream probably remember 'TEAM Duckling', the adorable Muscovy ducklings that I watched grow over several weeks at the local zoo back in February and March...now, a Canadian goose at the Fairhope beach has hatched six precious goslings! I spent several hours following them around this morning, through three swim sessions, a nap, and two feeding frenzies...LOL Definitely some quality time spent with these newest additions to the Mobile Bay landscape...and more shots are on the way!

Hey everyone! I hope you've enjoyed a wonderful Saturday! I made the 50 mile run up to Splinter Hill Pitcher Plant Bog this morning and the new spring pitcher plants are looking good...but the various orchids weren't blooming yet! Normally they are all blooming by the end of April...Splinter Hill Bog is a Nature Conservancy site, home to many species of pitcher plants and bog orchids...

Note to my local friends who enjoy photographing the bog this time of year: Sadly, the entire right side of the main bog area (where the best concentrations of pitcher plants and orchids are usually found) was recently subjected to a prescribed burn but the left side of the bog is fine and full of plants...just wanted to prepare you for the shock!
