Tame the Kraken

I went to Sheffield for a meeting recently and noticed this as I crossed back over the river to where my car was parked. It's a crappy shot with a Blackberry phone but it's just to show this excellent piece of art that is only visible to people crossing the bridge.

It's on the back wall of a pub and I reckon it's by the delightfully-named "Phlegm", whose work has been featured in Romany WG's book Out Of Sight.

Someone saw a shot of this boat on my photostream and asked if I had any more, because the vessel has now gone to that boatyard in the sky. Here's one.

It's a pity about the shadow of another boat, but I couldn't help that.

I've re-edited this shot that was taken at "Seal Point" on the Kintyre peninsula a couple of years ago. The mountains in the distance are on the isle of Jura and the boat is a regular Caledonian Macbrayne ferry crossing to Islay. I liked the formations of the rocks and the warm evening light hitting them.

We once did the trip; the guy turned up late and had clearly been on the sauce the previous night, but his banter was good and we saw plenty of seals.

On a recent trip to the Highlands we did a bit of exploring, and we ended up getting the Glenelg-Kylerhea ferry. Since the Skye bridge was built the ferry trade dropped a lot but this little community-run ferry still provides a good service for local communities and tourists alike.

The ferry has a turntable system and draws up alonside the slipway. The dog was a constant help, except when he sat down in front of the little line of cars waiting to get across - just as we were beckoned onto the ferry.

The canal was originally built for commercial sailing vessels and later Clyde puffers to travel between the industrialised region around Glasgow to the West Highland villages and islands. It was designed by civil engineer John Rennie and work started in 1794, but the canal was not completed until 1801 (two years later than planned).

Spotted this little island filled with trees when I was driving round the Highlands a few months ago. When I walked down there to take a shot I saw the boat - and that just topped it off nicely. Happy accidents.........

Just after pulling out of Plockton station you get this great view back over the loch towards the village. I'm glad these shots came out fairly clear, because the train windows were pretty dirty.

I used to like the TV series Hamish Macbeth (set here in Plockton). OK some of the story lines were cheesy in the extreme but TV John was a good character, and the dope-addled doctor, and Hamish himself was an interestingly unlikely cop. It would be worth a re-run as most of the episodes aren't seemingly available on DVD.
