Sisters: 2nd Generation

camera_rwanda posted a photo:

Mama Mukantaganzwa Rose, her youngest children, and eldest daughter Solange Nyinawumuntu in their home. Many of the images in this series reflect the sisters and their families requests. This is one such image. Sister Rose wanted her family to stand in front of this tapestry which she really treasures. Sister Rose is one of the sisters who really warmed to me instantly. I suppose her motherly warmth and experience explains why.

Taking portraits of the sisters and their children inside their small homes was a challenge. Often, there was not enough space to accomodate them and me, the
photographer, so we had fun pushing chairs to the side, or having me crouch or stand on top of tables, etc. I have to say, though the sisters often look serious in
these images, for the most part, there was no short supply of laughter. When you look at these photographs, I want you to realize that the sisters took great pride
in sharing their lives with me. I am grateful for their generosity.

I consider Rose a sort of matriarch, and I look forward to watching her children grow up, hopefully with more opportunity than their mother who survived a genocide,
and had struggled much of her life to make ends meet.

The "Music for Life" 2006 camp is in full swing. Volunteers
from Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya are here at the
orphanage bringing music and joy into the children's lives...
Everyday this week the kids are playing, singing, and dancing
with their new friends.

Yesterday late afternoon while we were all dangling our feet
over the edge of wall shouldering the football field, one
boy insisted I take a photo of his lollipop. Here it is!

It takes very little to delight a child: a lollipop as bright as the sun.

The Gisimba orphanage, located in the Nyamirambo quarter of Kigali, is led by Damas Mutezintare Gisimba. Damas's father founded the orphanage in 1980 with 18 children living in one house. Damas took over in 1986 after the death of his father. During the genocide Damas sheltered over 400 children and adults in the small orphanage compound from the predations of the interahamwe [the Hutu paramilitary squads that carried out much of the genocide]. Though the orphanage was repeatedly menaced, Damas and his colleagues held their ground and did not give in to the genocidaires. He has been honored for his heroism by the Rwandan government and many other organizations.

"Centre Memorial de Gisimba (Gisimba Memorial Center)

Happy.

I took this picture after we'd all recovered from laughing...we'd been dancing in the courtyard to pop music, one boy and I having had a kind of dance off. Could he do this move? Could I do that move? My little sister Natalie calls this doing "teen moves." We took turns, each attempting to out-goof the other.

He won.

I am grateful to Susan, a fascinating Brit cum nomad who was in Eschowe indefinately. She brought me here to this orphanage. Like me, she is a language teacher, curious about international education and children's lives. Having arrived in Eschowe two weeks prior to the day I took this picture, Susan was living day-to-day, vascillating between staying in Eschowe and returning to finish a PhD in the UK.

I love being on the road, meeting up with locals, yes, and connecting to kindred spirits. I'm most happy with a camera and no itinerary.

Four sisters from oldest (to be written in later) to youngest, Rosine, Francois, Diana in the entrance of one of 6 dormitories at Gisimba Memorial Center. Yesterday was a religious holiday, so we all escaped the searing sun by languishing inside. I taught the girls Spanish, and they helped me improve my pronounciation of Kinyarwanda.
