Greylag Goose

A Greylag goose (latin name 'Anser anser') standing by the shore of Marsworth Reservoir. The ancestor of most domestic geese, the Greylag is the largest and bulkiest of the wild geese native to the UK and Europe and is also widespread in North America.

Sorry for the huge gap (nearly two months!) since my last upload, but a combination of being extremely busy and lack of inspiration has meant hardly any photos during that time.

I finally took the plunge and just moved up from my point-and-shoot camera to a DSLR, a Canon 500D (Rebel T1i to those North Americans among you). It's a whole different beast from my compact camera but I'm enjoying the learning curve!

This is the first of several photos from around the Marsworth Reservoir and canal area. I'd be interested in any critical feedback on how to improve with this new toy.

Bonfire Night celebration in the village of Marsworth, Buckinghamshire. The clouds held off and it turned out to be a cold but perfect night for bonfires and fireworks... and plenty of mulled wine of course!

I love the lone silhouette against the flames. I know what you're thinking, but this is one of the organisers and not a Guy Fawkes effigy. :-)

My family and I just got back from a wonderful 2-week holiday at the Sultan Gardens resort in Sharm el Sheik, Egypt. Despite getting an upset tummy for the last 5 days (a case of the "Sharm el Shakes"!) it was an awesome trip... the weather, food, people, pools and sea all made for a really great time.

My daughter and I did some exploring of the local area after visiting the Natural History Museum in the village of Tring, on the Hertfordshire / Buckinghamshire border.

She's now 5 years old so I sent her on ahead through this dark alley to flush out any potential muggers...

Lush Lock Gate No.16

This is the lower gate of lock 16 on the Aylesbury arm of the Grand Union Canal.
The original lock gates from the 1880's were replaced by new oak gates in 1995, but the constant humidity and lack of flooding on this side of the gates means that water-loving plants thrive on it.

I added a slight Orton effect to soften it and bring out the greens.

This shot is looking straight up through a sculpture called "Axis", designed by Robert Kilvington, located in Vale Park in Aylesbury.

"To mark the junction in Vale Park between Old Victorian formal garden and new Aqua Vale swimming pool development.
Commissioned by Aylesbury Vale Arts Council through Artpoint Trust.
Made from 12 intersecting stainless steel 60mm tubes.
Size: Height 8 metres x 3 metres diameter.
Completed April 2002"

The expanding market town of Aylesbury, situated in the Aylesbury Vale near the Chiltern Hills in England, is a mixture of old tradition and modern development.
This photo is a prime example: old narrow boats moored at the end of the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal (completed in 1815), overshadowed by construction of the vibrant new Waterside Theatre which is due for completion next year.

Photographed and uploaded for the "Weekend Assignment and Contest" pool... Contest #46: "Your Town".

Flax field... a bit too early

A field of flax in south Buckinghamshire.

It should be a sea of blue, but this was captured a bit too early as most of the flowers haven't opened yet.
This was taken a few days ago so they are probably at their best right about... now!
