What a game. West Ham really got in Man Utd's faces, and they didn't like it up 'em. There were times in this game where West Ham's play was as good as I've seen - and Mo Diame's goal was a peach. True, there was always the suspicion that Man Utd could up the ante and score a goal, but Rooney was subdued and sulky, his mood not helped by chants of "You're just a fat granny shagger!", and Van Persie didn't do a lot, apart from score a goal from an offside position. Some mysteries remain, most of them embodied by Ricardo Vaz Te, who looks rather lost these days, though he did score the first goal. Good to see Noble coming on as a sub, too. I think the experiment of putting Gary O'Neil in the middle has run its course - others may disagree, and he did make a goal line clearance at a vital time. Oh, if only Matt Taylor's head hadn't exploded near the end when he was through on goal, had a rush of blood, and took a shot which bounced off the moon. Still - a good night. Oh, and a column by Irvine Welsh in the programme...

Well, Andy Carroll had a good game, scored two, and might have had three if West Ham hadn't gone down to 10 men after the sudden implosion of substitute George McCartney's knee. Was it a comfortable win? Yes and no. The scoreline says yes, the feeling in the pit of the stomach says otherwise, as West Brom grabbed a penalty and four minutes of injury time was announced. And us with 10 men, one of whom was Ricardo Vaz Te. Chant of the day: "Odenwingie/He went to QPR/They left him in the car..."

Niel Gow is said to have composed many of his fiddle tunes under this oak tree on the bank of the River Tay near Dunkeld. Michael Marra sang about it in his song Niel Gow's Apprentice. This bench, by sculptor Nigel Ross, bears an inscription from Marra's song: "I'll sit beneath the fiddle tree, with the ghost of Niel Gow next to me."
