Just back from a fantastic long weekend in Aptos near Santa Cruz with my Wife. It was a birthday gift from her actually to be able to spend some quality time and also to be in a place so conducive to photography. What a fantastic gift!
I originally wanted to hit up Cripps beach or maybe even Davenport Pier again, but I wasn’t too keen on the idea of my wife following me down any ropes, so I stuck to some safer locals. One spot I’ve wanted to hit for quite some time is the Crack in Davenport. This spot has been PUT TO SLEEP by some seriously talented photographers, and I wanted a chance to put my spin on it.
It was great to see this baby in person, as always, it was much larger in person than it seems in photographs, which always seems to be the case with photographs. In the era of super-wides, perspective and scale get all mussed up. Anywho, I was following in the footsteps of some giants who had put their stamp on this bad mama jama - Jim Patterson
, Jave, James Wang etc, and I wanted to do it justice.
Upon arrival, I scoped, scouted, goofed off a bit and then got down to business. I had the great fortune of running into a few great people and flickr contacts as well, which is always a bonus when shooting a killer spot. I bumped into Wilson, and
Aaron M, and I think Willie was there too. I think Wilson said it, it’s always interesting meeting people you know via some social network and then happening upon them in real life. It was a pleasure meeting you all, and I’m sure we’ll end up at the same spectacle of nature again soon. Cheers to all, and happy shooting. –jared r.
The Lighter Side of Davenport Pier

Jared Ropelato posted a photo:

****Please Click on Image to view larger and on Black background****

Once I got down to this very secluded beach (see previous story about the climb down) I set my camera bag down and walked it north to south. I wanted to get a “feel” for it. It was a B&@@% getting down, and I wanted to make sure I got everything out of it I could…
This shot was one of those shots. It wasn’t one that I’d pre-visualized, and even in the moment, it seemed odd to turn my camera away from where all the clouds were. Sometimes that’s the way it goes.
I came over to this side of the pier, trying to keep a flow to them, because the light hitting this side was just so warm, and so nice right before the sun went down. (to help you visualize, I would comp this side, shoot two shots, sprint to the other side, take two shots, sprint back, screech to a halt in the middle of the pillars for a shot, and then sprint back here for two shots) It was like I was the pea shooter in the centipede game or something.
Because I didn’t have a ton of clouds to “play” with, I tried to use the water rolling in to grab some of the color in the sky. Most of the clouds were to the right, and there weren't many in this comp to soak much up. The horizon caught a little color too, and I liked the “flow” to the water in the FG of this one.
Cheers and thanks for lookin’ folks.
The Lasting End of Things, Sunset at Davenport Pier

****Please Click on Image to view larger and on Black background****

I love finals week because school gets out early which means that we have some extra time <del> to get grades finished and prep for next semester </del> to go shooting!
I’ve wanted to head down to the old Davenport Pier for quite some time now. A few obstacles kept getting in my way though. It’s really far, I didn’t know where it was, and I’ve heard it’s “very sketchy” to get to.
I figured, what the heck, I’ll give it a go. I asked a couple photogs to head down with me, but no one was really available, so I just headed down myself, taking a climbing rope with me cuz word through the grape vine was one was needed.
Drove for a little over two hours (see “really far”) and climbed out of the truck to scope the scene a little before I headed down. I got the edge, looked down… “holy $&!%” I thought to myself, (see “very sketchy”) “there it is” (see “didn’t know where it was” or “google earth”).
Luckily for me, there was already very worn and dingy looking ropes/strands tied off at the top to help me down, so I didn’t need my brand new climbing rope rated for twice my weight.
I get to the bottom and think “sweet, all to myself”, which I was by the way, I didn’t just think that for no reason.
After the exhilaration of getting down began to wear off though, I realized that I was totally alone, aka, sans clouds. If I were a text message, my sad face emoticon would have started to blink. I have previously written about my pain to shot ratio, so you know I was going to shoot regardless. I threw on my Lee Big stopper and started firing away some LE shots I figured I’d later BW convert, and it wouldn’t be a wasted trip. After all, at that time I wasn’t sure I’d ever get back up that cliff (yeah, cliff, really) or if I did, I’d ever sack up enough to come back down.
Just as I thought I’d maxed my Big Stopper, I noticed some very high, very faint clouds rolling in. Could it be???
You know that sound when Indiana Jones swings in and the movie gets all … “action-y”? I faintly heard that sound, and I knew all was going to be right in the world for just a little while. I shot until it was dark, and then drug myself back up the strands of string that I used to drop down. I got to the top, turned and looked back at this beautiful relic, and thanked the world for allowing me to do what I do, and for giving me something to love so much…. And then I realized my vest had come undone from my backpack and had been lost somewhere on the climb. If you see that, can you email me? It’s red and poufy. Thanks.
Anyway, editing was a nightmare here as things had to be straightened (thanks Jave for the tip!), details had to be found that were lost in the 3 stop reverse GND, and vignetting had to be taken care of. Plus a splash malfunction, but I’ll save that tid bit for another day.
Enough typing. I hope you enjoy this. I LOVED taking it. Cheers, and have a great 3 day weekend. (Thanks MLK).
