This quite rare perennial plant is parasitic on the roots of willow trees and sometimes on alder and poplar trees, too. The two-lipped flowers appear on very short leafless stems, and the plant favours shady damp places, often beside streams. You are most likely to find Purple Toothwort in the chalk-stream meadows of southern England, but this particular plant was photographed in the wet woodland area at RHS Wisley, in Surrey

This fast transit craft is used by the Royal Marines & SBS and is thought to be capable of reaching speeds of about 70mph! It is believed to have been designed and built by VT Halmatic, based in Portsmouth, Hants, as a replacement for the VSV and MIL-500, two boats currently used by the elite SBS. The boat's angled design and grey paint scheme suggest that it has stealth characteristics. For further stealth, the boat features a hull design that results in a minimal wake. As with the VSV and MIL-500 it replaces, this new boat's role will be that of a long range, high speed, interception and insertion craft.

Not to be outdone by the Oystercatcher...

After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, control of Brownsea Island passed to the Crown. Henry VIII recognised the island's strategic importance of guarding the narrow entrance to the expanding port of Poole, so as part of a deterrent to invasion forces from Europe, the island was fortified in 1547 by means of a blockhouse, which became known as Brownsea Castle. In the following centuries, the island passed into the hands of a succession of various owners. The castle was revovated during the 19th century as an impressive residence but was badly damaged by fire in 1895. With the island now owned by the National Trust, the castle has been rebuilt and is leased and used exclusively by the John Lewis Partnership as a hotel for their partners (staff).

Not really a black-headed bird, more chocolate-brown - in fact, for much of the year, it has a white head, but when in full breeding plumage I do think they look very smart indeed!
