Nant Gwrtheyrn - Valley, Mountains and beach of this magical area now renowned for it's Welsh Language Centre.

SNIP: "Nant of course has been the focus of much of my attention in the last couple of years with "The Enchantment" my book and major exhibition about this magical place, but for Simon, this was the first time since 'we' were little kids like Leven that he had been there. I watched his face for signs of recognition and at first I didn't sense much (other than his familiarity with my book about the location) but when we finally made it down to the beach (after bracken bashing and scree running (to Lev's high excitement)), I heard Si say "I remember the beach seeming much steeper in my mind" so I knew those memories were there, just as they had been for me as the slightly older sibling. This was OUR shared history, OUR childhood, OUR bond even if in the distant past and the notion of history was heightened further when at extreme low tide, and with shifted sands, we saw for the first time the remnants of the third and most Northernmost of the cargo jetties, now sea-weed covered but still pointing Westward out into the Irish Sea. History here is un-missable, it pervades almost all your senses, and here we were, with Simon's only little lad, and a most loved nephew, now witnessing and sharing and thrilling in this same place with us."

We may not have had the week of baking sunshine and relaxing swimming but from a photography perspective the gales and storms brought superb conditions and lighting. The jetty at Sennen always takes a pounding from the Atlantic but the golden evening sunshine disguised the awesome power of the Atlantic swell.

I revisited this file after it sitting for a year or so in the undecided folder, and today just knew what to do with it. It was always the composition I'd liked, not the colour, so I stripped out all colour and adjusted the contrast. Now it speaks volumes, to me at least, about the space, the distances, the emptiness, loneliness and transitional nature of an elemental stage-set.

UFO Like, this cloud barriers the bright sunshine, and the beach shivers in the sudden coolness.

There are few natural woods where I feel intimidated, but this was one of them. I parked on a dark lane even though sunshine was above and beyond. This place existed in a cocoon. There was no one about, no cars to be heard, just the setting sun and the sharp call of a pheasant. In the distance I heard gunshot, snapping me back to modern day but the wood really held me. I kept looking over my shoulder and checking out the dark corners but couldn't see anyone or anything. I'm not even spooked by horror films these days but I genuinely felt weird in this small but surreal looking woodland, stunted trees, strange shapes and contrasting flat areas of dead leaves. I was glad to get back to the van, it's red tail lights left on to guide me back!

Shifting Sands

This is my second visit to this small wreck, but this time the sands had almost covered it's sculptural shapes. In it's place however, beautiful pristine ripples of sand snaked their way outward from the wreck towards the nearby rocks. The dead seaweed corpse splayed itself out in parallel with the undulations within the shadow of the bow.

On a walk past Gwenver beach, fascinated by the graceful waves curving across a virgin beach, we practically stumbled over a beautiful, tanned girl with long legs out-stretched, reading and sunbathing right in the middle of the narrow cliff path. Four of us had to step around her to get past and she didn't even recognise our presence. There was a mermaid of Zennor not far from here !
Broken Shelter

At the end of slightly dreary day here on Anglesey, on a whim I drove out to Holyhead and walked along the breakwater to find some emptiness. I was on the one hand enjoying the weak breaks of sun, but also appalled by the filth and rubbish all over the dilapidated breakwater. Bags of rubbish, fast food containers, tangled fishing line discarded right along it's length. Urine soaked rags bagged the doorway shelters on the lee side of the wall.

Looking across the harbour to the now mostly deserted Aluminium Jetty my main vision was the slowly shifting weather front and a gently undulating turquoise sea. I was impressed by the vast distance across the bay and the huge boulders of defensive slate. I was fascinated by the oscillating sunlight on the distant cranes and in all honesty, with a fresh wind buffeting my face, I could have been forgiven for thinking that this was a wonderful blend of man & nature, but the abundance of rubbish and smell of marine diesel tainted my vision.
