Been A Long Day

Tim Poulton posted a photo:

On our last sunset in Tasmania I took the gang to Binalong Bay, with the famous tree, stunning blue water and orange-hued granite (the colour of which is actually produced by a lichen) so I knew I couldn't go wrong.

We arrive around noon for a lunch by the sea and contemplated our afternoon of shooting, with so many compositions I felt a little overwhelmed and after much thought, finally decided to spend most of my time with the famous tree. After I picked my location (marked with my initials) I started to realise that the tree symbolises our existence and how we really travel through this life alone to fend for ourselves and that everyday is different from the last.
Second Chance

On a Trip last year I captured the Hazards of Coles Bay and was never completely happy with the composition, it felt unbalanced and even though I got everything else right I always wanted another chance.

I finally got that chance on my recent adventure with Stanley, Bruce, Sonia, Steve and Andrew. After a dismal couple of days at Cradle Mountain we made our way to Coles Bay for the final part of our trip with torrential rain all afternoon we decided to go back to the house to watch the F1 qualifying on TV and only at the last second I had a look outside and to my surprise the sky was going off. I scrambled the team together and we made our way to the same spot, with only 10 minutes of light and rain all around us it was a real challenge to capture this pano. I'm still not 100% happy with the final result but at least this time I nailed the composition.

If you'd like to join me on one of my trips check out my facebook page for more details.

All work and no play makes an unhappy chappy, thank god for my beautiful/crazy family otherwise I'd go a little mental.

The lack of photography this year is all but over, only 3 weeks until my Tasmania Adventure. It's going to be great shooting with Stanley Kozak, Sonia Masarova, Steve Arnold, Bruce Hood and Andrew Lomas at two of my favourite locations, Cradle Mountain and the Bay of Fires.

Here's a little pano from my Kangaroo Island Trip last year, anyone interested in joining me on my next trip to this amazing place, check out this link.

On a trip to Nelson Bay with the family last year I hooked up with Jeff Smith for shoot at the magical Zenith Beach. I've been to this location many times and love the solitude and the sheer might of the sea, you really need to keep an eye on the ocean, for me thats one of the appeals of this amazing spot, the chance you'll be swept out to sea has it's draw.

I haven't been on a shoot since New Zealand over Xmas and looking forward to my trip in March to Tasmania, with a group of great photographers.

Maybe Jeff and I will get out for another session one day, stay on the fence buddy, it's the best place to be.

The Pinnacles, Cape Woolamai, Phillip Island, Victoria.

I've been sitting on this image ever since I came back from my trip to Phillip Island. I'm finding it harder to find images I'm happy with, if it's not at least as good as the last post, it doesn't deserve the time of day, this philosophy towards photography makes life very difficult and can only mean the end of this obsession. It's the same with cars, hobbies and before I met my beautiful wife, women.

So I've decided to plan a couple of epic trips, 4 - 5 days in and out, nothing but photography, bugger the sleep, as they say, you can sleep when your dead. So any suggestions would be welcomed and if anyone has a spare bed I can sleep on, I'm more than happy to take you along for the ride, the tune to 007 keep coming to mind.
The Everlasting Gobstoppers

Tim Poulton posted a photo:

Moeraki Boulders - New Zealand

I got up way too early for this one and ended up waiting around for over an hour for first light. Cranking the Ford Mondeo up over 180km on the way didn't help, you got to love NZ highways, not a soul on the road at that time and plenty of nice sweeping corners, and the rabbits are like a fine mist at that speed, just kidding, maybe 170km.

Anyway I didn't do my research on this one and the tide was way to high, so I had to strip off to my boxers to get to the location, hoping no one would turn up.

Surf or waves are a nightmare for panoramic work, so I decided on 15 second exposures to create the misty effect, maybe a little too arty for my style but I like it just the same.

New Zealand - Lake Rotorua

Lately I've had a falling out with some friends and I will not compromise on my philosophy, you see I do not suffer fools lightly, I suppose it's my way or the highway. It's amazing with social media how what once was between two friends, now involves so many others and complicates the matter, drawing it out longer than it should.

One of his friends got involved and started sending me abusive threatening messages trying to be the hero, if only he knew what I've been through in my life and the sort of people I've dealt with, pretty foolish if you ask me, shows how immature and stupid some people can be.

A wise man gets more use from his enemies than a fool from his friends.

I shot this using my new Tilt Shift Flip System I've developed which will be ready to launch in the first quarter of 2013. The best part of this new kit is non level compositions, only two frame stitching, faster between frames, faster stitching time and less errors and problems with moving subjects.

Merry Xmas Flickr friends.

Lake Rotorua

On our first day in New Zealand, after spending 2 hours in the queue at Countdown which is really just a Woolworths, picking up some supplies before everything closes down for Xmas, I went for a little drive around Lake Rotorua and found this cool little jetty. Most of the day was overcast with intermittent rain so I was confident of a nice sunset, what I got was something truly spectacular, the sky lite up golden and bruised purple , with a gnarly old pier, my favourite subject, I couldn't go wrong.

I'm off to Lake Taupo this afternoon before Santa makes his rounds to our house and the chaos starts.
At The Pinnacle

Tim Poulton posted a photo:

The Pinnacles - Phillip Island

How I captured this panoramic.

CAMERA Nikon D800
LENS Schneider PC TS Super-Angulon 50mm f/2.8
FILTERS 1.2 Soft Grad and 1.2 ND
FOCAL LENGTH 50mm
APERTURE f32
EXPOSURE 0.7692
ISO 100
WHITE BALANCE 5880K
TILT SHIFT Shift 6 Tilt 0
FRAMES 6

Having been to this location several times with poor results, I was determined to come away with the perfect panoramic. The ocean was pounding the headland and was kicking up a lot a sea spray making it very difficult to get a set of frames before having to clean my filters but was also creating an amazing atmosphere. I decided to shield myself from the spray and spent the next 20 minutes switching from west to east and found that the combination of sea spray and sunlight looking towards the Pinnacles was creating a stunning three dimensional effect. Getting down low and shifting my Schneider up I captured the perfect set of frames for this panoramic. After a quick stitch on my Mac Air and a little work in Photoshop I was happy with the final result.

The legend that, while they are mute during the rest of their lives, swans sing beautifully and mournfully just before they die. I know this isn't true but it makes for a nice story all the same.

This image required a little dexterity, while submerged in the water, the swans floated by and I had to make a few adjustments with filters and setting but in the end I nailed a set of frames for this panoramic.

Cape Willoughby Lighthouse - Kangaroo Island

We headed down to this location for a sunset and one thing that I love about shooting with a great bunch of mates is not only the fun, beer and banter but the way you have to really push your creativity for a unique composition and style. I decided to lie down in the field for a super low down comp and love the three dimensional effect it creates.
Final Destination - Kelvedon Beach Tasmania

Final Destination

I've had my eye on the lonely abandoned boat house on the south coast of Tasmania for many years now, my wife and I with our first child came down for a short holiday and on our way to the Bay of Fires, I spotted the boat house and could only imagine the history and stories associated with it.

At the time I wasn't even interested in photography, but the way it overlooks the Hazards of Coles Bay and it's compositional qualities, really appealed to me.

My Tasmanian adventure was meant to start with this location, but with a flight delay we arrived too late and decided to make it our final destination at the end of the trip.

With a stunning sunrise, I finally immortalised the boat house, ready to take pride in a special place on my wall.

Get the most of this panoramic, view it large.

The Awakening

On the first day of the Cairns to Brisbane photography tour at the stunning tropical beach of Palm Cove, we set up for a sunrise and John Armytage decided to change his exposure settings on a stitched panoramic, now this is a big no no, as you get all sorts of problems, making it very difficult to stitch. Thinking about this over the weekend it dawned on me that maybe this could work, so at the SS Dicky for sunrise I tried a technique I like to call the Chorus Effect.

Basically I did a series of frames at f32 for 2 minutes a frame, again at f2.8 for 1 second a frame and finally f16 for 30 seconds a frame. Blending them all together allows you to capture the movement in the background clouds, crisp clouds on the horizon and a smooth textured ocean.

I promise this will be the last image from this series and I'll move onto my next adventure, but I wanted to post this composition because a few people made comments about the distracting sun in the last one.
Feeling supremely confident with my Schneider PC-TS Super-Angulon f2.8/50mm lens and Nikon D800, I clicked off a set of 7 frames to capture this classic North Coast panoramic.

Its the first time I've tested this lens and camera combination shooting directly into the setting sun, and was amazed at its performance. As you can see I got almost no blow out and absolutely no flare.

Art is when you hear a knocking from your soul — and you answer.

I awake at 5am, full of anticipation for the Focus Photography weekend away in ACT and the snow. With 5 hours of work and a 3 hour drive, the setting sun could not come fast enough. Arriving at our first location, which I picked, it dawned on me that I hadn't chosen so well and after a 15 minute look around, and a few frames later, I jumped in my car and drove like a madman to the Commonwealth Bridge in the city. With what light was left, I snapped off several long exposures for a vertical pano feeling a little guilty for leaving everyone behind, but photography is a selfish passion, so for this I'm sure they will forgive me.
Holy Grail

In my quest for panoramic perfection I've been interested in Schneider lenses, after many emails I finally got hold of a demo Schneider PC-TS Super-Angulon 50mm F2.8 Len and went to my safe location in Coogee expecting things to be calm and free from intrusion, how wrong was I, not only did it rain but the surf was massive and several times I found myself scampering to the safety of the steps and only making it sometimes, lets just say a change of clothes was needed. Anyway, back to the important stuff, firstly I didn't use any filters or a pano head for this image, I used settings f32 at 15 second exposures for 5 frames iso 100. The lens mounts on the tripod, right on the nodal point, and is absolutely massive, dwarfing the camera and looks the business, but all that aside, the image quality and dynamic range are phenomenal, even with my Carl Zeiss I'd have to use filters to balance out the exposure. Have I found the Holy Grail of panoramic setups, I'm off to the snow this weekend and plan on spending lots of time testing, stay tuned for more results.
In an age where advances in awakened consciousness and spiritual enlightenment are sought by the masses, groundbreaking ideas are constantly emerging. We live in extraordinary times, and are witnessing an unprecedented window of opportunity to evolve and ascend humanity.
