Tim Poulton posted a photo:

I won't call this outback NSW as I copped a bit of flack yesterday, so for the sake of argument let's just call it country NSW.

As a landscape photographer you really couldn't wish for any more, within 2 metres I could have the shed and the water tower or grain silo in one composition and turn to the left and we had this magical tree. Now I'm a sucker for a lone tree in any situation, but to get one with a setting sun, lighting up the foliage is pure bliss.

While shooting this we turned around and about 5 metres away is a herd of very young heifers, so beautiful and young, too be honest I'd had a few beers so I almost gave them a photography tutorial but decided I might look a little weird to my fellow clickers.

Anyway, thats all I got from the weekend so very happy with the results.

Have a great long weekend Easter break, look forward to seeing all your exploits.
Shed Some Light

Outback NSW

Firstly i'd like to thank Ray Jennings for inviting me on this trip, shame you couldn't make it mate.

After a 4 hour drive with Bruce Hood and Craig Hollaway through the Hunter region, one of my favourite drives we arrived at the Sunflower farm. On the drive through the property we passed this amazing shed and water tank, it felt like that scene out of Jurassic Park when they couldn't get out of the vehicle to look at the dinosaurs. After checking out some fields and windmills we headed back to this location and spent the afternoon drinking Coronas and waiting for the sunset.

The three quarter moon in genuine maybe just a little larger, but thats what it looked like to our eye and thats not the Coronas talking.

I'm off to the Blue Mountains this weekend to stay with out good friends Stig and Lisa so I'm looking forward to a bit of bush walking and maybe a little autumn colour.

Thanks for all the comments and support, I'm sorry if I've been slack in getting back to you, it's been a little hectic with work and the arrival of our third child.
Been A Long Day

On our last sunset in Tasmania I took the gang to Binalong Bay, with the famous tree, stunning blue water and orange-hued granite (the colour of which is actually produced by a lichen) so I knew I couldn't go wrong.

We arrive around noon for a lunch by the sea and contemplated our afternoon of shooting, with so many compositions I felt a little overwhelmed and after much thought, finally decided to spend most of my time with the famous tree. After I picked my location (marked with my initials) I started to realise that the tree symbolises our existence and how we really travel through this life alone to fend for ourselves and that everyday is different from the last.
Second Chance

On a Trip last year I captured the Hazards of Coles Bay and was never completely happy with the composition, it felt unbalanced and even though I got everything else right I always wanted another chance.

I finally got that chance on my recent adventure with Stanley, Bruce, Sonia, Steve and Andrew. After a dismal couple of days at Cradle Mountain we made our way to Coles Bay for the final part of our trip with torrential rain all afternoon we decided to go back to the house to watch the F1 qualifying on TV and only at the last second I had a look outside and to my surprise the sky was going off. I scrambled the team together and we made our way to the same spot, with only 10 minutes of light and rain all around us it was a real challenge to capture this pano. I'm still not 100% happy with the final result but at least this time I nailed the composition.

If you'd like to join me on one of my trips check out my facebook page for more details.

On a trip to Nelson Bay with the family last year I hooked up with Jeff Smith for shoot at the magical Zenith Beach. I've been to this location many times and love the solitude and the sheer might of the sea, you really need to keep an eye on the ocean, for me thats one of the appeals of this amazing spot, the chance you'll be swept out to sea has it's draw.

I haven't been on a shoot since New Zealand over Xmas and looking forward to my trip in March to Tasmania, with a group of great photographers.

Maybe Jeff and I will get out for another session one day, stay on the fence buddy, it's the best place to be.

The Pinnacles, Cape Woolamai, Phillip Island, Victoria.

I've been sitting on this image ever since I came back from my trip to Phillip Island. I'm finding it harder to find images I'm happy with, if it's not at least as good as the last post, it doesn't deserve the time of day, this philosophy towards photography makes life very difficult and can only mean the end of this obsession. It's the same with cars, hobbies and before I met my beautiful wife, women.

So I've decided to plan a couple of epic trips, 4 - 5 days in and out, nothing but photography, bugger the sleep, as they say, you can sleep when your dead. So any suggestions would be welcomed and if anyone has a spare bed I can sleep on, I'm more than happy to take you along for the ride, the tune to 007 keep coming to mind.

Lake Wanaka - New Zealand

I ended up going to this location on 3 occasions and each time I got something completely different and I'd have to say would be my favourite from the trip. After 2 weeks of getting up at crazy hours, my mind was a little confused and the alarm was always set to 3am as a little reminder to check forecasts and instead of catching a few more zzz's, I grabbed my gear and headed to Lake Wanaka.

The drive up through the Crown Range and down through the Cardrona Valley is an ex racers dream, if only I had a set of wheels to take advantage of this amazing stretch of road. One of the things that really stands out in New Zealand is the lack of Kangaroos, at first you drive all tense waiting for one of these Australian monsters to kamikaze across the road, destroying car and potential life but the only thing getting in the way are rabbits and at this time of the morning it's like a game Frogger a bit like the negative people in life, easily dealt with.

Anyway this is a 4 frame pano, two shots for the stars before sunrise and two more once the sun came up using my new flip system.

Thanks for all the comments, and inspiration.
The Everlasting Gobstoppers

Moeraki Boulders - New Zealand

I got up way too early for this one and ended up waiting around for over an hour for first light. Cranking the Ford Mondeo up over 180km on the way didn't help, you got to love NZ highways, not a soul on the road at that time and plenty of nice sweeping corners, and the rabbits are like a fine mist at that speed, just kidding, maybe 170km.

Anyway I didn't do my research on this one and the tide was way to high, so I had to strip off to my boxers to get to the location, hoping no one would turn up.

Surf or waves are a nightmare for panoramic work, so I decided on 15 second exposures to create the misty effect, maybe a little too arty for my style but I like it just the same.

I loved this tree so much I was compelled to try another sunrise to see what new form it would take, this morning I picked up Dex and we made the trek to Lake Wanaka we got this stunning pink and blue sunrise, the lake was still full and quite calm creating lovely reflections of the famous tree.

Towards the end another photographer turned up in a mad rush missing the colour in the sky and after a quick chat discovered he was the famous Roger Wandless, we ended up at his house for a cup of tea, amazing photographer and a really nice guy.

Well I've been in Queenstown for 9 days now and I've done over 3000km, and I have to say I really dig this place, amazing mountainous peaks, snow, rugged countryside and stunning lakes everywhere, I now understand why they call it a photographers paradise.

Last night I decided to drive up The Remarkables for a sunset and in a Ford Mondeo made for a scary ride, I can only imagine what it would be like in the snow.

With endless compositions I decided on this symbolic gate theme, leading the viewer down to the lights of Queenstown.

With my photography I find that whenever I plan a shoot, most of the time it never really works out and it's the impulse photography that incites a positive response.

This morning I met up with Dex to shoot the Pier at Glenorchy and we ended up driving around like mad men looking for that perfect image, after we decided to head back to Queenstown, on impulse I drove down this dirt road to the waters edge and after a session of stone skipping, snapped off a set of frames for the panorama before you.

WANAKA LAKE - NEW ZEALAND

Jay and Damien made me aware of this location from their amazing trip earlier this year, I highly recommend checking out their streams, www.flickr.com/photos/jaydaley/ www.flickr.com/photos/27356398@N03/
We've had so much rain in the last week that the lake was swollen and the trunk of the tree was totally submerged, they say the Tangaroa God is angry when this happens.

I couldn't get as close to the tree as I'd like, even waste deep was still too far, not to mention very cold. The clouds popped nicely and I decided on a 1o second exposure to smooth out the water.

After three days of miserable rain we had a relatively clear morning, so I headed out at 4am for Glenorchy to shoot the pier, the temperature dropped last night so we had a nice dusting of snow throughout the region, I had the pier to myself all morning and finally settled on the classic composition.

I hope everyone is having a nice start to the year.

On our way to Queenstown we decided to take a little detour and found this amazing property with this old barn that was falling down, overlooking the snow capped mountains, I found a composition with the fence leading to the old barn.
It's 10pm New Years Eve and I'm sitting on the couch with my 5 year old daughter watching Titanic and I couldn't thinking of anything better.

New Zealand - Lake Rotorua

Lately I've had a falling out with some friends and I will not compromise on my philosophy, you see I do not suffer fools lightly, I suppose it's my way or the highway. It's amazing with social media how what once was between two friends, now involves so many others and complicates the matter, drawing it out longer than it should.

One of his friends got involved and started sending me abusive threatening messages trying to be the hero, if only he knew what I've been through in my life and the sort of people I've dealt with, pretty foolish if you ask me, shows how immature and stupid some people can be.

A wise man gets more use from his enemies than a fool from his friends.

I shot this using my new Tilt Shift Flip System I've developed which will be ready to launch in the first quarter of 2013. The best part of this new kit is non level compositions, only two frame stitching, faster between frames, faster stitching time and less errors and problems with moving subjects.

Merry Xmas Flickr friends.

Lake Rotorua

On our first day in New Zealand, after spending 2 hours in the queue at Countdown which is really just a Woolworths, picking up some supplies before everything closes down for Xmas, I went for a little drive around Lake Rotorua and found this cool little jetty. Most of the day was overcast with intermittent rain so I was confident of a nice sunset, what I got was something truly spectacular, the sky lite up golden and bruised purple , with a gnarly old pier, my favourite subject, I couldn't go wrong.

I'm off to Lake Taupo this afternoon before Santa makes his rounds to our house and the chaos starts.
At The Pinnacle

Tim Poulton posted a photo:

The Pinnacles - Phillip Island

How I captured this panoramic.

CAMERA Nikon D800
LENS Schneider PC TS Super-Angulon 50mm f/2.8
FILTERS 1.2 Soft Grad and 1.2 ND
FOCAL LENGTH 50mm
APERTURE f32
EXPOSURE 0.7692
ISO 100
WHITE BALANCE 5880K
TILT SHIFT Shift 6 Tilt 0
FRAMES 6

Having been to this location several times with poor results, I was determined to come away with the perfect panoramic. The ocean was pounding the headland and was kicking up a lot a sea spray making it very difficult to get a set of frames before having to clean my filters but was also creating an amazing atmosphere. I decided to shield myself from the spray and spent the next 20 minutes switching from west to east and found that the combination of sea spray and sunlight looking towards the Pinnacles was creating a stunning three dimensional effect. Getting down low and shifting my Schneider up I captured the perfect set of frames for this panoramic. After a quick stitch on my Mac Air and a little work in Photoshop I was happy with the final result.

The legend that, while they are mute during the rest of their lives, swans sing beautifully and mournfully just before they die. I know this isn't true but it makes for a nice story all the same.

This image required a little dexterity, while submerged in the water, the swans floated by and I had to make a few adjustments with filters and setting but in the end I nailed a set of frames for this panoramic.

We headed down to this location for a sunset and one thing that I love about shooting with a great bunch of mates is not only the fun, beer and banter but the way you have to really push your creativity for a unique composition and style. I decided to lie down in the field for a super low down comp and love the three dimensional effect it creates.
