Sometimes I just like to remind people that this is the view from my workspace.

It's hard to capture a sunset in a new way, but I gave it a shot. This is a pano of images from the 85mm tilt-shift, and images taken with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4.

UPDATE: Ha, I should have known that if I took a sunset picture it would make Explore.

My freezing fingers generally were not the biggest fan of shooting in this frigid NYC winter, but I was very happy when it let me do one of my favorite sorts of engagement shoots -- exploring a couple's relationship in their actual living space, where the daily work of building a lasting relationship is done.

Elizabeth and Steven were fantastic, and I can't wait for their upcoming wedding in the warmer climate of Austin.
Double Rainbow, all the way

Ryan Brenizer posted a photo:

Wendy and I were in Boca Raton for a wedding, and, given how freezing it is in NYC these days, we wanted to take as much advantage of it as possible. So we went for a long, long walk along the beach, watching the sandpipers run along the waves, making up stories about the owners of the other footprints in the sand. It had been raining all morning, but that didn't stop us. As we finally reached the point where we realized how far we'd walked, and that we'd have to walk all the way back, it started to rain a bit more, even though the sun was out.

"Look!" Wendy said. A rainbow seemingly began to grow out of the ocean. "I've never seen one right on the horizon before!" (We are not oceanfaring people).

It grew fast enough that you could follow its progress with your eye, first one band, and then a second. while behind us was a fantastic sunset.

You'd better believe we started shouting "What does this MEAN?"

And that's why you always bring your camera with you. Regular ol' panorama, 13 frames with the Nikon 35mm f/1.4.

I love shooting with other photographers, such as this session with British photographer Albert Palmer and his now-fiancée. They're always up for anything, such as when I say. "Hey, how do you feel about sitting in the middle of Grand Central? It's likely that we'll get a talking-to from security." "Sure!"

And doubly so, since I'd conceptualized shooting through the legs of a rushing businessman, pants and all. But I think this adds to their natural class.

I also seem to have a (subconscious?) habit of getting the American flag in whenever shooting British subjects.
The Color of Night

Ryan Brenizer posted a photo:

There are so many reasons to love the high-ISO capabilities of modern DSLRs, but more than anything I love that, with the right lenses and careful technique, we can actually take portraits and casual photos at night, that really shows wsa night looks like. Night is not the bright blue lighting cinematographers have had to use for decades to connote darkness. It is a barely grey darkness punctuated only by the things that humanity have made, the areas and objects that we deem important enough to light up when the sun goes down. It is many-colored, shiny and complicated. I love it.

I sometimes will be out shooting people at night with the tiniest of lights or no light at all, and I will see other photographers walk by , and I know they think I'm nuts. Right after this shot, a team walked by with a battery pack and a giant octobank on a boom. The way that you're *supposed* to take photos at night, the way that destroys the night. It's a good way to shoot, too -- octobanks are killer light sources. But I love the freedom of choice.
The Color of Night
