In early November 2012 I had a chance to visit the Canadian Rockies with fresh early winter snow before all the lakes totally froze. Over the seven days I was there, I shot sites from Canmore in the south to Jasper and many points in between as you can see from my morning pano shot of Peyto Lake ....where Fickr's Joalhi (Josy) and I had to do a short hike from the parking lot to the overlook as the road to the upper parking lot was not plowed.

This view was taken from the very northern end of the lake not long before sunset and even in early November ... wow...was it cold (below zero) when we were there !!!

Follow this great advice to get to them the quickest. From Calgary airport, take RT 2 north to Rt. 201 west. 201 is known by locals by Stoney Trail. Follow this to Rt 1 and go right onto the Trans Canadian Highway. At this point you're about 45 minutes from Canmore. Banff, Lake Louise and the Icefield Parkway is all north at this point.

Oh, two more things, I'll be back in the Canadian Rockies from Sept. 5-12. Second, for dinner in Banff, I highly recommend Tony Roma's right in the middle of downtown.
I so happy to be able to participate in and contribute to the upcoming centennial celebration of the historic iconic Moulton barns of Jackson Hole's days of yesteryear, one that's forever established as part of Wyoming's old west. What will the celebration include you ask ? Well, for one, the Moulton family will be gathering in Grand Teton National Park. There will be an art show where many will have their photographs taken over the years displayed and auction in an effort to raise additional funds to help restore these priceless, historic barns.

Will you be in Jackson Hole for the centennial celebration of the Moulton Barns this July? Do you you have photos you'd like to have entered into the art show dedicated to this celebration ? Should you submit a photo print, canvas print, etc., according to my Moulton Barn facebook contact, it does not have to be just of the Moulton Barns; it can be any photo taken throughout Jackson Hole, WY.

I'll be there and you be able to see my submissions ... hope to see yours there too. For further information on the art show and the centennial celebration just click on one of these links: Art Show || Moulton Barns Centennial Celebration Info
4 year anniversary photo . . .

As it started snowing here in mid west (USA) this past Tuesday, I thought back to my first winter visit to the Jackson Hole, WY to shoot some winter scenes there. So I went through the raw files from that trip and lo and behold I looked at the date and saw that as of today (February 27) it will be 4 years ago when I took this Teton sunset scene. So this shot is in celebration of the 4 years since I made that winter visit.

I'll return during the winter of 2013-2014 as I have a couple of special projects I need to work on while there. So, if you plan to make a winter visit and want to join me let me know ... you'll have to rent snow shoes (but that's inexpensive).

This scene makes me wonder about the lives of those who once lived here.

We know in those days life was not a breeze even with a view and I wonder if they looked up from time to time and were motivated to push on with this impressive mountain range before them.

They've had there time in history. Only they really know what impact their lives had in their time in history. Are we aware of our impact in life and those around us in the short period we find ourselves in today's historical time period. What impressions will we leave for those who come after us? Will we leave something behind that will inspire someone who sees a part of the remnants of our lives years into the future?
This gate is located at the right of the northern Moulton barn at the north end of Mormon Row Road. The Tetons just seemed to fit right where I wanted them for this shot.
If you've never been to Banff, you'd never know just how large this mountain is. Six vertical shots certainly gives you an idea how large it is.

Here's a point to remember. After picking up your Calgary rental car, you head to the mountains along the Trans Canadian Highway. 45 from the airport, when you drive along Rt 1 headed to Canmore, Alberta, Canada you reach the southern most end of Canmore where Rt 1 heads directly north. You see a large mountain in the distance. Well, you guessed it. That mountain is Mt. Cascade. It's your guiding point to Banff from that point on.

During my recent early winter visit to the Canadian Rockies, I visited Banff's Cascade Pond for early sunrise.

I shot this area with one of my Flickr friends Josy. On Nov. 7, 2012, Josy and I first went to Two Jack Lake, arriving there about an hour before sunrise when it was at least 20 degrees below zero.

"Joalhi" has visited the Canadian Rockies so many times in all seasons over the years and has taken the most superb photos there of anyone I know.

Well I'm back from another 4 days of travel ... but not for long.

I had a brief chance to enjoy some time at the beach during my recent visit to California again. I was in the area of Malibu over 3 evenings and each day I didn't know if I'd finished work in time to make the drive a little north to EL Matador Beach to catch some wave action and sunset shots of the sea stacks there.

The first evening was cloudy and no nice sun for sunset was to be seen. However, the next two evenings, I had a sun and the last day I had a crazy set of high clouds that appeared to be more a mist than nice distinct clouds and that made the sunset really glow...and later I will upload a few from that evening.

For now, here's a shot from the first evening when the tide was coming in. This is a single shot, no bracketing and blending or fusing of multiple exposures.

This coming Monday, I will be traveling to Seattle, WA for a few days...work related of course but I will take my camera equipment and try to get some time at one or two of the beaches west of there for some sea stack sunset shots and hopefully, all fingers crossed, I'll have time to drive down to see Trillium Lake for sunrise shots.

Thanks for stopping by.

Now that the Teton area in Jackson Hole, WY (USA) has received a ton of snow recently and continues to have snow up to this day of uploading this photo, I thought I'd post my first deep winter photo of the Tetons.

Around March 1 of last year, I was driving along the Gros Ventre Road headed east from Rt 191 north of Jackson, WY and I saw this guy. It was around 5 degrees below zero when I stopped the car to get this shot. I watched as he made his way much closer to me and at the closest point I could see it looked like he definitely needed to find food...kinda felt sorry for him ... but that's life for these guys out this way.

Eventually, he crossed the road to my left and entered the woods along the Gros Ventre River which empties into the Snake River another two miles or so to the west of here.

By the middle of Nov. 18th 2010, the northeaster had moved off shore but the effects of it lasted well into the next day.

Ocean currents produced powerful waves which crashed into the rock below and around the Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse.

Around sunset I share this area with a Portland native and Flickr's Charlie Widdis (chk out his nice photostream).

After being around the shoreline with rough seas and crazy waves coming in you shortly notice a pattern where a wave dwarfing all preceding waves comes in and you know it's time to move to higher ground....and fast.

In late May I took a full day photo workshop with Chip Phillips. It started around 4:30am and ended at 9pm. Having seen Chip's photos of this area, I just had to visit the area but I did so with one of the best photographers of the Northwest. I had a great time and learned a lot from his workshop...which I'd highly recommend.

This is looking NE from the north side of StepToe Butte.
Yes, the title is a taken from the 1941 John Ford movie "How Green Was My Valley" with the wonderful Maureen O'Hara based on the 1939 novel by Richard Llewellyn.
John Colter was a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition in the very early 1800's. His main responsibility was to hunt for the expedition since he was such an excellent shot with his rifle. Upon returning to St. Louis at the return of the Corps trek to the Pacific he met two characters to trap beaver w/o much profit and later joined in with Manual Lisa who, btw, St. Louis is Lisa's final resting place.

Another beautiful morning for Mt. Moran at the end of the 2nd week in June. We took a left at Moran Junction off Rt 191 north of Jackson, WY and a few miles into the park we turned left on Teton Park Rd. Not long after the turn, we exited our vehicles and everyone jockeyed for their positions. It was like watching bees exit a nest and fly off. I chose to head down by the water's edge for a few shots along the shoreline of Jackson Lake.

I shall return in 2013 !!
Here you see the stream generated a little further up by water flowing from Phelps Lake just north of Wilson below the bridge along Wilson Rd. Wilson Rd is a few miles west of Jackson, WY (USA) and it takes you north along a very wooded drive where you're apt to see moose, bear and rare type owls. In early June, this stream is really hauling. I used a longer than usual exposure with a combination of the Singh-Ray reverse GND and a Sing-Ray 3-stop GND.
From June 11-13, I joined a group of Flickr photographers at Jackson Hole, WY (USA) for 3 full and I mean full days of site shooting with Jeff Clow. We experienced all weather conditions over the 3 days.

Yes...while everyone was back at the main Schwabacher Landing Reflection location for photos I took off and missed the group photo there...uuuugghhhh !!! ... those elusive ground squirrels made me do it !!! I followed the tributary north about a half mile to where it turns northwest. And here's what I captured.

I couldn't go too low for this shot because if I did I would not have captured the reflection in the pool above the little dam...so I compromised a tad.

While in Jackson, WY, drive north of town along Rt 191, passing the airport entrance on the left. Take a left when you see the sign for "Moose". This will be the road for entering Teton National Park. Pay the weekly fee then drive a few miles to the parking lot for the "Taggart Lake" trailhead.

Follow the trail for about 1.5m and take a left when you hit the trail that circles the lake and walk about a 100 or so feet and then cut to the lake's edge for this scene.

Also, on days when it is not windy early in the morning if you want to capture a glass reflection like this you need to be at the lake within 2.5 or so after sunrise as if you get there later then a gentle breeze comes over the lake and then the mirror will be lost until a little before sunset.
On Sunday May 23rd I flew to Spokane, WA for a Monday photo workshop with one of the northwest great photographers Chip Phillips...nicest guy you'll ever meet. I arose from bed the 24th at 2:45am and was on the road traveling south out of Spokane for an hour or so drive to meet up with Chip. As I was driving, I looked east and noticed the first glimmer of light from the sun and guess what ... it was only 3:30am!!! I arrived at our scheduled meeting location at 4:30a. Within a short time Chip drove up and we took off to our first location to set up for our photo shoot. Believe me, he knows his 5D MII inside and out and histograms...if you don't know how to use them (or get to them on your camera) you definitely will !!! After the first round of shots, we moved further south for a 2nd location and by noon we stopped for lunch at a nice cafe and critiqued photos and discussed photo tools and techniques. Afterwards, we headed to our final shooting location - Palouse Falls and what a beauty it was! We shot here until a little after sunset and finally finished around 9pm. What a great day it was! This is one photo of many resulting from my photo workshop with Chip. And lastly...Chip...I'll always be thankful for the wealth of knowledge I gained that day from you.
Ok...Shane fans...remember this movie? I remember seeing the movie a long time ago and wondered where those mountains were that I saw in the movie. Well I found it alright and it certainly is in a beautiful setting but regretfully the Park Service has let it deteriorate into ruins...check out the "MAP" under "Additional Information" to the lower right for its exact location.
