In Lieu--Daily Image 2011--May 22

I hope you'll pardon my absence from this daily image, as I completely forgot to take one yesterday. In Illinois, where I lived for 44 years, tornadoes were commonplace and thrilling. I've really missed them here in Wisconsin. Well, yesterday, I got closer than I ever did living in a tornado belt.

I was working on the ref desk, and was watching the radar pretty closely. We were under a tornado warning, which doesn't mean much--that clouds could spawn one and conditions are super ripe. Yesterday seemed different, though, so I gave a preemptive announcement over the PA saying that it was likely that sirens would be sounding and that we would need to shepherd everyone into the basement. At that point, about 40% of the patrons just left. About 5 minutes later, the sirens sounded and we got everyone into the basement pretty quickly. I think all the resisters had left by then. This happened pretty often in Illinois, and it was never a big deal--just a bunch of people crowded together waiting for the all-clear. But yesterday, one of our aides was working--he's also a volunteer EMT, and had a scanner with him. He was listening pretty closely in case he was dispatched. At one point I heard someone say "Natural disaster." And then words like "houses and buildings destroyed." "South side." "Losey and Green Bay." OH CRAP. You mean...like close to where a lot of us live?

One little girl was at the library by herself. We got her on a landline to call her folks. One of our patrons started shaking--he lived at the intersection mentioned as being hit. I told him he was not obligated to stay, and he left. Many of us were texting family and getting news on our phones.

We left the basement after 20-30 minutes and left the library open a few more minutes after closing because it was pouring rain. And, yes, the south part of town was hit by an F2 tornado. Some of our staff were affected by it. At least 200 homes and business were seriously damaged. Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt. Aside from being without power for about 8 hours at my house (which I thought was kind of fun), we were unscathed, but the damage you see in this picture was only a mile from my house (near Longfellow School on 19th St). So, today, I am feeling thankful, relieved, but sad for my fellow townspeople and coworkers who have to work through this. This is pretty caring community though, and I think we'll find ways to help those who need it.

Decided to get away from my computer and out of the building, so went out for lunch. Had a fine plate of blue corn nachos at the Root Note, where it was kind of hoppin' and where it made me miss living some place where I knew lots of people.

I was out with 3-400 people, protesting at 9 am this morning. Wish I could be around to greet the governor this afternoon, but have to be on the ref desk. Let me tell you, people are OUTRAGED and feeling betrayed here.

OH...by the way...when I got back to work, there was an email to all of us, saying that because of the bill that was illegally rammed through last night, our take-home pay would be about 5% less with our next paycheck. Trying to find the "fight" through the quease and panic.

Thanks to Iris Jastram, "Snowdump Ho" is my new Northwoods Gangsta name. Hoping this is the last time I have to use it this year, but, hey, it's only February. Yesterday, I shoveled off a winter's strata of rabbit turds and seed hulls from the back patio. Today, it looks like we're slated for another 6-12" Snowdump, HO!
