A cliche shot, I know, but I like the "edge of darkness" feel with McAffee's Knob and the other mountains still visible and prominent. (And the light trails, of course - everybody likes light trails, right?!!)

The old Clements Mill in Piedmont Mill, VA. This Mill is featured in a recent book called "Lost Communities of Virginia", by Terri Fisher and Kirsten Sparenborg - a recent birthday present from my family. Turn your point of view 90 degrees to the left, and you have the frame that is the cover of the book. It's a beautiful text that I'm certain will lead me to a large number of excellent photo sites in the coming months.

My daughter and I visited Piedmont Mill yesterday (about 25 minutes South of Roanoke, near Wirtz, VA) and we had a blast. Although the thunderstorm that you see looming in the background of the image yielded wonderful skies and gorgeous light, it also chased us away from the site all too quickly. Can't wait to visit again.

3-shot HDR using Photomatix. Normal sharpening, touch-up and crop using LR 3.4.1. Cloned out the power line using PSE9 (content aware cloning is awesome).

Falling Springs near Covington, VA. This image needed 7 shots spaced 1-EV apart to capture the whole dynamic range since the falls were in deep shadow even an hour and 1/2 after sunrise. I'm thinking the better light would be mid to late afternoon. Might even be able to get a sunset in view. Going to try it again in about a month or so when the leaves start to turn.
