a shot from the Irish Hunger Memorial at Battery City Park in NYC.
It was my first time there and it was an unexpected treat...nice parks and cool views of the statue of liberty.

This is a view of the Gatekeepers Tower from the original Belmont Estate/Beacon Towers. It was the inspiration behind the mansion for The Great Gatsby.
In the early 1900's Long Islands north shore (aka the Gold Coast) became the playground for wealthy industrialists and bankers such as the Vanderbilts, Guggenheims, Hearsts etc. They built opulent castles along the shore.
The original castle has been demolished but the gatekeepers residence and towers still stands.
Beyond it is gated, privately unowned property. Theres still a lighthouse that stands there but in order to see it you have to be on a boat.
I am DYING to get into those gates to photograph the old lighthouse, but it requires finding out who lives there and getting permission to get in.... booohooo.
The gates are so massive and intimidating, i dont think i'll ever have the nerve to get in there.

Hear It..

At one time this part of long island (nassau county) was farmland. In the late 60's & 70's, when i was a kid, there were still a few around.
Now they're all but gone. This one held on the longest but about a year ago it closed as well.. Now its just a weedy landmark.
