Being quite busy i haven't really had a chance to get out and shoot in the past few weeks and San Diego's weather wasn't helping much either. Finally had a chance to spend a well needed weekend camping in Anza Borrego. Sadly i didn't encounter any stunning sunsets but i did have a chance to sit back and star gaze with a friend. The days were blazing hot and the nights beautifully cold. I decided to fire off a few exposures of my tent and the stars. Be sure to FULL VIEW this shot!

A burst of sunlight illuminates the endless maritime layers of Montana De Oro State Park.
Taken on a recent quick road trip. Due to really strong winds and high tides i decided to put my Big Stopper to use. Don't be mistaken, these rock formations are huge! climbing across them can be a fun but risky process. I got my tripod in position and started firing off shots; at a snails pace. This was about a 4-5 min exposure. I stood behind my tripod with my arms out like a scarecrow with my windbreaker on to shield my tripod from the wind as much as possible almost getting nailed by a few waves and massive chunks of sea foam in the process. I left here right after sundown with my face numb and my stomach ready for a warm meal at my campsite.

Mystical Solstice

Golden rays of light burst through a unique doorway carved by time along Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur. Truly one of those beautiful moments where the elements combine in your favor. Winter solstice is the time at which the Sun is at its southernmost point in the sky. During this brief period our sun lines up directly with this portal and allows us to witness a unique phenomenon.

This truly is one of the most popular locations making it hard to get a unique shot. But i guess sometimes you just have to give in and realize this portal, even though photographed like crazy, is still absolutely beautiful. I took this right before i shot "winters nightfall" I hadn't planned on uploading any of these shots but this one caught my eye and i decided it would be a shame if i didn't post it. If anything it makes a killer desktop background! The weather was absolutely crazy in Big Sur this winter. I could have sworn some of the waves over in Garrapata State Park were close to 20ft high with some of the most unique rip currents I've ever seen. Good luck to anybody who falls in!
I was very happy to finally witness the portal in action and hope to return soon. Ive continued fine tuning my editing process so every new shot has been a great learning experience.

Dreaming Awake

Soft winter light combined with a dramatic winter ocean hits the coasts of Montana De Oro State Park, CA. Taken on my most recent productive trip into northern California. This coastline is a beautiful area with endless compositional possibilities. The tides are wild during winter and many of the the unique rock formations are constantly under powerful high tides. 20 minutes before this shot i and my camera were completely drenched by a wave almost like a Shamu show at sea world, thankfully i had my rain cover on my gear! definitely gave me a scare though. Ive been trying to take a turn in my processing habits and drop some old habits! much more to come in 2012.

Winters Nightfall

Winter tides rush toward a flaming sunset at Pfeiffer Beach, CA.
Just got home from a epic road trip back into Big Sur with a view stops on the way. I had previously been shooting the portal and became tired of the endless groups of photographers shooting the famous rays. The thought that everyone of us was getting close to the same shot was making me a bit queezy! I realized i was ignoring a beautiful sunset and hiked up north to capture it. After a evening of shooting i perched myself up on a rock and watched the color fade away. Sat down the second i got back from Big Sur and tackled the process of using luminosity masks... wow what a life saver. I would like to thank D Breezy for a helping me work out a couple kinks in my editing process.

Gift Of Light

Taken on my birthday! this sunset quite a gift.
Had a chance to test out my new Kaesemann 105mm. I predicted a nice sunset early in the day but because of the time change had to rush to the beach to make it for sunset.
This was the first composition and first shot i took after i set up. About 3 minutes later the light was far less dramatic.

Hiked multiple days in a row through the rain along cliffs to the same location until the weather conditions finally satisfied me. First hike was accompanied by wind and rain so strong that rain droplets were actually flying upwards because of the winds gusting through the fjords. I sat in astonishment as droplets of rain flew in the opposite direction right before my eyes. Truly a phenomenon that only presents its self with the right conditions. I first saw a shot of this location when i was 14 years old and on that day i vowed to put a bit of spare change aside each year until i have enough to witness its beauty with my own two eyes. Five years later i found myself in Europe and decided there is no way i was leaving that continent without photographing Norway, this is the end result. I give thanks to my buddy Alex for being such a patient trooper and posing for me. Norway and this location will truly always be in my heart.

This area was one of the most unique Ive ever seen. I plan on going back in the future and capturing this shot the way it was meant to be captured, with an amazing sky full of clouds and high tides. I figured i might as well upload a preview of what that shot is going to look like. Sometimes you just have to deal with the cards you are given that day.
