Daphnis nerii, Oleander Hawk-moth caterpillar

Daphnis nerii is a large Hawk-moth found in wide areas of Asia and Africa. It is one of the most beautiful butterfly- patterned moths found.

The adults feed mainly on nectar of a wide variety of flowers. They have a preferece for fragrant species of flowers like Jasmine and hover around the flowers at twilight time or sunset.

The caterpillars feed mainly on oleander (Nerium oleander) leaves, a highly toxic plant to which toxicity they are immune. They also may feed on most plants of the Apocynaceae family such as Adenium obesum, Tabernaemontana divaricata and Alstonia scholaris in India.

Happy new year!
The Lunar new year begins today in Karnataka, India and this day marks the beginning of the Hindu new year "Vijaya naama samvatsara" or the new year "Vijaya". It also marks the spring season. On this day, a mixture of neem leaves (bevu) and jaggery(bella) is prepared and eaten. The mixture symbolises the joys and sorrows of life.
A major event of the day is listening to the Hindu almanac or "Panchaanga" and preparation of Obbattu (similar to sweetened chapaati) and other savories.

Crimson Rose, Atrophaneura hector
Crimson Rose (Atrophaneura hector) is a large swallowtail butterfly belonging to the subgenus Pachliopta (Roses) of the Red-bodied Swallowtails (genus Atrophaneura). It is found in India and Sri Lanka and possibly the coast of western Myanmar.

Grasshopper, Acrida sp. This afternoon!

Acrida is a genus of grasshoppers in the family Acrididae. The genus contains around 40 species, which are found in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Insects of this genus are omnivorous, and are a well known pest of many agricultural crops.
