I spent the past week at a training session in Budapest, Hungary. I visited Budapest about five years ago and knew my way around but I was thoroughly impressed at how much more modern and visitor friendly it is now than when I was there before.

I shot this on Sunday while scouting locations for blue hour shots. Great clouds and occasional bits of storm light meant that even my scouting shots turned out to be pretty decent shots unto themselves. More to come...

No one in the history of cameras has ever shot this bridge at night... ever. ;)

But seriously, the real trick to shooting a long exposure of the Chain Bridge is not catching a hundred point-and-shoot flash bursts.

On my last morning in Budapest, I walked through the train station to find this train rolling in. This swanky coach line is the fabled Orient Express and really, swanky doesn't even scratch the surface. The interior and the stewards looked like something out of a 19th century film. For a mere €1850 ($2400 / £1475) per person, you too can take this train overnight from Budapest to Paris. I wonder if they have free wi-fi...

Ok, ok, it wasn't the Volga, and really, they're not boatmen... but that's the title that popped into my head when I shot this. These buskers were the entertainment during an over-priced dinner cruise on the Danube. Well, them and the photographer peddling his prints of the guests. These guys came and stood at our table and asked us to make a request. Of course we didn't know any of the music so my colleague said, "Hungarian music?" and the burst into song for about thirty seconds. We gave them 500 Forints (about $2.50/£1.55). It made us laugh that the guy had a 5000 Forint note there as seed money... as if someone is going to give them $22.00 (£13.00) for half a minute of work.

I spent the evening out on a photowalk making an 8km loop covering two bridges and both sides of the Danube. The constant drizzle and warm air made for a humid evening and kept me on my toes while walking on the slick cobbles with my photo gear. Finally, the rain stopped, leaving me wonderful reflections and empty streets to have my photographic way with. :)
