Yesterday I had the great honor of a visit by the marvelous mrwaterslide and the beautiful bootpainter as they continued their <del>rein of terror and destruction</del> sightseeing tour through Virginia.

I'm still catching my breath after returning home, but I wanted to take a quick moment to thank them both again for taking the time to come and see me, and for such a fun visit! Bootpainter has the most beautiful Scottish brogue! I hope I didn't embarrass her too much by my fascination with it, but I would have been happy just to sit and listen to her speak all day! And however you conceive of mrwaterslide, in real life he <del>is an intelligent and gallant gentleman with excellent taste in antiques</del> instantly attracts goats wherever he goes. ;) Isn't it funny how you can meet someone in person for the first time, but feel like you've known them for ages?

Last night I went to see a play (thank you RVANews.com !) called "Circle Mirror Transformation" by Annie Baker. The play bills itself as "The comedy of life, reflected", and it's won the OBIE Award for Best New American Play, and the Drama Desk nomination for Best Play.

Circle Mirror Transformation is about a small group of people taking a theater class in Vermont, and the changes the participants go through over the 6 week course of the class. If this play comes to your town, I recommend seeing it if you get the chance. It was fantastic! I was almost in tears by the time it was over, but in a good way. :)

If you're in Richmond, Virginia, you still have a chance to see it at Barksdale through May 22rd.

(I know, I've posted this photo before. But it goes along perfectly with what I wanted to say today, so please just humor me. I'm still working on getting my computer back in some type of order and a new graphics program installed. Once I'm finished with that, I'll be posting lots of new things.)

Between 1854 - 1929, 150,000 to 200,000 homeless, neglected poor children from New York City were moved west, by train, to rural towns and farm communities.

As an "orphan train" crossed the country, a few children would be left at each stop, where families took them into their homes. Some were adopted. Others lived as farm hands, apprentices, or live-in laborers. Some found good homes. Others found lives of abuse and exploitation. Two orphan train boys went on to become governors of South Dakota and Alaska. Billy the Kid was also an orphan train child.

Because of its central location and large farming communities, Missouri was the perfect hub for the orphan trains, and it's been estimated that as many as 100,000 of the orphan train children were placed there.

When I was little, my parents used to tell me a rhyme that went:

"There was a little girl,
who had a little curl,
right in the middle of her forehead.
And when she was good
she was very, very good.
And when she was bad
she was horrid!"

I just don't think this lady looks like the "horrid" type, though.

When I was little, my parents used to tell me a rhyme that went:

"There was a little girl,
who had a little curl,
right in the middle of her forehead.
And when she was good
she was very, very good.
And when she was bad
she was horrid!"

I just don't think this lady looks like the "horrid" type, though.
The photographer of this photo was Z. Kauffman of York, Pennsylvania. I found it just outside of Richmond, Virginia.

Once Upon A Time...

clotho98 posted a photo:

Did I ever tell you about the time I ran into the Cowardly Lion in the grocery store? Probably not... :)

It was a few years ago, on New Year's day. My grandmother had just died a few days before, and I was very sad. Plus, I'm single, and had spent New Year's eve alone, and that just made me sadder.

I had to go to the grocery store, and I was standing in the produce aisle (by the bananas - I have no idea why I remember that), and this guy I'd never seen before just sort of appeared behind me. He was maybe about 10 - 15 years older than me, with long hair, and was wearing a Viet Nam era field jacket. With a very cheerful voice and a big smile he said "I'll bet no one has told you HAPPY NEW YEAR yet!!" It sort of caught me off guard for a minute, and then I said "Come to think of it, you're right. No one has." And he said "Well, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!"

It was totally like a WTF moment, and so strange that I started to smile. And then we got into the most bizarre conversation about random things that were even more WTF, and after a few minutes he said: "Do you know who you remind me of? What was that movie? It was a movie with a girl that goes on an adventure with her dog, and meets all these strange characters..." I said, "You mean The Wizard of Oz?" And he said "Yeah! Remember that big lion that she met? Watch this:

And then he stood back, and went "RRRRAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRR RAAWR RAAAWWWRRR!" and did the BEST Cowardly Lion impersonation I have EVER heard in my life! And it was just so completely bizarre that I was smiling and laughing and feeling about 150% better than I had been. Then he looked around the corner of the aisle, and there was an older woman walking down it (I don't know if she had anything to do with him or not), and he said real quickly "I think I have to go!" and he quickly ducked around the corner in the other direction.

I've never seen him again since then, and have no idea who he was, but it still makes me smile when I think of it. Oh, and by the way, the part where he said I reminded him of the girl from the Wizard of Oz? My grandmother's name was Dorothy.

There is no identification of the woman in this tintype, and no photographer's stamp on the back, but the mat is embossed with Potter's Patent March 7, 1865. I didn't even realize it was tinted, until I got it home and scanned it. I had thought it was just dirty. Found in Mechanicsville, Virginia.
