Ending the second world war

At this table the German unconditional surrender in the Second World War was signed on May 7 1945, in Reims, France. The German representative was Generaloberst Alfred Jodl (his chair is the one closest to the camera to the right).

The place was a school where the Allied Forces had their Supreme Headquarters - Today the school is 'Lycée Franklin Roosevelt'.

(You can't really tell, but there was actually a thick pane of glass between me and that table.)

The village at the horizon, by the sea, is Les Gougins.

This battery was built by the Germans as a part of the Atlantic wall. It is also known as the Marcouf Battery. It was heavily bombed before D-Day in 1944 but was still operational enough to be able to sink the American ship USS Corry (DD-463). It was taken over American troops on the 12th of June.

This battery was built by the Germans as a part of the Atlantic wall (the road here, right through it is a later addition). It is also known as the Marcouf Battery. The British war cemetery of St-Charles-de-Percy, containing 789 burials, 786 British and 3 Canadian.

Arromanches, the place for the Mulberry harbour built by the allied forces to create an artificial harbour at Arromanches as part of the D-Day invasion of 1944. (If you look really closely at the photo you can see pieces of the harbour, as little dark dots in the water, close to the horizon.)

Entrance from the road to the left of this colonade, the cemetery to the right - the names of the soldiers buried in the cemetery on the pillars.

Henri-Chapelle war cemetery has 7,992 America burials (of which 554 are unknown) from the second world war. The place was designed by the Chicago firm Holabird, Root and Burgee and the landscaping was made by Franz Lipp. It was inaugurated in 1945.

One of the many crosses - this one with fresh flowers. Clayton D. Curtis died on January 31 1945. He was a sergeant, killed in action, from Pondera County, Montana.

The battery of Azeville, built by the Germans to defend the coast, was actually camouflage painted - to look like a ruined house, now complete with bullet holes.

At Batterie Azeville, a reminiscence of the second world war when the German had it to keep a look on the coast. This is in one of the corridors.

In memory of Louis Halley, in the Romanesque church of St Samson at the heart of Ouistreham. Louis was born on February 2 1921 and died at the concentration camp of Mauthausen (also known as Mauthausen-Gusen Concentration Camp) March 7 1945.

Sculpture by the Norwegian artist Per Palle Storm, inaugurated in 2004, commemorating the 60-years anniversary of D-Day and the 1002 Norwegian sailors who partook in this.

Muslim graves at the French war cemetery at Vauxaillon.

In French the cemetery is called le cimetière militaire français de Vauxaillon. Most of the graves are from the first world war and the fallen are mostly from the fighting around Chemin des Dames - all in all 1909 persons. Add to that 169 from the second world war, who died in 1940.
