Freemasons' Hall

ⓒRebecca Bugge, All Rights Reserved
Do not use without permission.

This Art Deco building was designed by the architects Henry Victor Ashley and Francis Winton Newman and erected 1927-1933. It was to commemorate the 3 225 British Freemasons who died in the first world war (their names are on big plaques inside the building for all visitors - on the guided tour - to see). It was originally called the Masonic Peace Memorial - but changed name to Freemason's hall in 1939 at the outbreak of the second world war.

It is the headquarters for the United Grand Lodge of England and meeting-place for the masonic lodges of the London area (which are quite a few).

There is a library and museum which everyone can visit, and guided tours of the rest of the house (not just for Freemasons but anyone interested). Photographing is not allowed inside - which is quite a pity, they have some breathtakingly beautiful stained glass windows inside...

But it is also used (both exterior and parts of the interior) as the MI5 office in the British TV-series Spooks!

ⓒRebecca Bugge, All Rights Reserved

Outside the sturdy doors of Freemason's hall on Great Queen Street. The obvious place to eat your takeaway lunch.

Salonina Matidia (68-119), portrait dating to about 120 A.D. Emperor Trajan was her maternal uncle and her daugher Vibia Sabina married emperor Hadrian - in short she was close to the imperial court of Rome. She married a first time 81/82 with Lucius Vibius Sabinus, consul and former proconsul. He died a couple of years later and she remarried in 84, with a Roman aristocrat called Lucius Mindius (who is only known for this marriage). He died after a year, but she got a second daughter out of the marriage: Mindia Matidia (often known as Matidia minor - she in turn grew up close to the imperial family, but unusually enough never married). It is possible Matidia married a third time, with Lucius Scribonius Libo Rupilius Frugi Bonus, a consul.

In 112 she was given the title Augusta by the emperor Trajan. She spent a lot of time with the emperor and it was she and his wife Plotina who brought his ashes back to Rome in 117 after his death in Selinus, Cilicia. After her death in 119 she was deified by emperor Hadrian. Both an altar (place unknown) and a temple were erected in her honour. The temple might be the remains found at Vicolo della Spada d'Orlando, north-east of the Pantheon in Rome.

The burial guarded by the angle in the middle of the photo is over a Carrie, wife of Benjamin Birkin, who died in 1876 aged 48. She was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire as Caroline Boyall. And below her is her daughter Louisa. Benjamin Birkin was a licensed victualler (which meant he could sell food and alcoholic beverages), born in 1834 who married her in 1853. Their daughter, whose full name was Louisa Ann, was born in 1855. She married Thomas Ross in 1877, and died in 1898 - but from before 1891 (when there was a London census) she had been living at home again with her widowed father under her maiden name again. Benjamin actually remarried - in 1904, to a Mary Rose Howell (who was no spring chicken herself, being born in 1832). He died in 1912.
Greek and Roman terracottas (and the odd one out*)

*the one from Cyprus. Try to spot it (or just read the text below)! Then there's the one in bronze, but that should be easier to see.

The artistic quality of this shot is not very high - photographing dimly lit things in museums through glass is hard to get that great. But I want to share it because I confess I am utterly and completely in love with the objects themselves.

No. 1 A child's toy of terracotta, which originally had wheels so that it could roll. It's a horse with a rider and a load of five amphorae. It is Greek, probably from Athens, in Early Geometric style, dating to about 700 B.C.

No. 2 Terracotta figure of an actor impersonating a slave, dating to about 300 B.C. From Cyprus.

No. 3 Terracotta mule carrying two amphorae. Greek, probably from Rhodes, dating to about 500 B.C.

No. 4 Bronze figure of a donkey with baskets on its back. Roman - date unknown.

No. 5 Terracotta mule carrying two trays with cheese. Roman, from southern Italy, dating to the 3rd or 2nd century b.C.

No. 6 Terracotta model of a kneeling camel, carrying agricultural produce. Hellenistic Greek in style, from Syria, dating to 3rd or 2nd century B.C.
