Alien Abduction

It happened in the blink of an eye and the click of a shutter. One minute I'm lining up a shot of Mango next to some Antelope Canyon walls and the next thing I know a blinding light of unknown origin hits her and she's transported out of the canyon. Alien abduction!

Those aliens managed to scan the whole canyon and lock on to the only intelligent life available amid 150 or so tourists. It's a good thing Mango likes us or we'd all be cleaning toilets on an alien battle cruiser by now. She put in a good word to the aliens about our potential for the future and our uncanny ability to make the most delicious treats.

She was back before I'd even taken the camera from my face, but the light was gone. She came over and gave me a nudge and a wink as if to lock the secret between us as to why dogs are really on earth. ;-)

Just outside the entrance to Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ. Sandy red-orange rock as far as the eye can see. The trucks that brought the groups out here baja'd the last 20 minutes over sand dunes. It made for an interesting ride. The purpose of those over-sized balloon tires became obvious when the truck shocks and struts provided only a fraction of the shock absorption needed to keeps us all from needing back surgery after the ride.

"Now that you've all had your internal organs rearranged, a free service from us here at Antelope Canyon Tours, we can proceed inside the canyon on foot."

One seriously beautiful natural attraction in Page, Arizona. Like I said in the previous shot, getting here via trucks pretending to be dune buggies is a little jarring but the trip is worth it.

When you step into the canyon (just a black "crack" in the side of a rock wall when viewed from the outside) the walls take on a glow from the sunshine radiating all around. The light contrast makes it difficult to get a well-exposed shot, but if you take your time you can do it. The whole canyon is like this as you walk through it. With many tour groups arriving at the golden hour of noon, it can get a little crowded so be prepared to be patient. If you are, you'll get your shot. Probably tons of them. Every angle you shoot is unique and beautiful.

This is one of my favorite "tons-of-shapes" shots.

Sedona, AZ. Bell Rock Vortex. A beautiful place to say the least. Red rock formations everywhere you look. The town is clean and friendly. I'm told it's something of a rehab town.

You're supposed to feel some kind of energy when you hang out at certain places in in Sedona. These vortexes will give you a jolt of energy. Or something like that. I didn't feel anything other than exhilaration at being on vacation in a beautiful place.

If you ever have the opportunity, I highly recommend coming out here. It's very close to other beautiful and famous places; like Antelope Canyon and the Grand Canyon. Hmmmm, maybe I'll go there next. ;-)

Montezuma Castle (no revenge)

[ lee ] posted a photo:

My first stop was sort of a dry run to see if I could get my camera working well enough to take some sort of decent picture. I suppose I did. But it's hard to tell how big this really is since there are no people in it. D'oh!

Here's the deal with Montezuma Castle.
Montezuma Castle National Monument, located near Camp Verde, Arizona, in the Southwestern United States, features well-preserved cliff-dwellings. They were built and used by the Pre-Columbian Sinagua people, northern cousins of the Hohokam, around 700 AD. Several Hopi clans trace their roots to immigrants from the Montezuma Castle/Beaver Creek area. Clan members periodically return to their former homes for religious ceremonies. When European Americans discovered them in the 1860s, they named them for the Aztec emperor (of Mexico) Montezuma II, due to mistaken beliefs that the emperor had been connected to their construction. Neither part of the monument's name is correct. The Sinaqua dwelling was abandoned 100 years before Montezuma was even born and the Dwellings were not a castle. It was more like a "prehistoric high rise apartment complex".
Montezuma Castle (no revenge)

Maybe I'll remember to take a self portrait at my next stop.

Blinded Me With Science

[ lee ] posted a photo:

Eureka! Presto! Holy Crap!

Words that illustrate an unexpected discovery. We've all used them at one point or other. (Maybe one more than the others.) I've seen this sculpture outside the stage door of the Drama City Theater in Osaka for years now. I don't know what inspired it or who the creator is. It just always seemed to scream DISCOVERY to me. And I've always wanted to take a picture of it. Thanks to my 365 project, I had my camera with me this last time. I took several poses anticipating some bizarre Photoshop creation. Thanks to the science of software (from Adobe) I give you Blinded Me with Science. Named after the Thomas Dolby song. This electric craziness seems to say just that.

I actually had bigger plans for this shot but I'd been sitting on it for so long (since January 22nd that I just wanted to get it posted. Thanks for looking. ;-)
