Bandari woman sewing Iranian version of Burqa (Batooleh), Hormozgan province, Iran.

The same thing that she is sewing can be seen on her face. This is hardly similar to the Burqa worn by Afghan ladies. These ones are called Batooleh in the local Bandari dialect.

The actual place is a village near Gav-Bandi town in Hormozgan province. My quest to find Batooleh led me to the house of this very hospitable and kind lady. She not only sew me a brand new Batooleh but also invited me for lunch in her house. Fantastic lunch I had there, with warm bread just baked by herself a while ago.

That afternoon after spending only couple of hours in that village, it was already difficult for me to say goodbye. I have hardly seen such a kind and hospitable people ever in my life.

Lahijan is a city in Iran's North-Western Gilan province, on the shores of the Caspian Sea and south of the town of Langrood. It is historically the first town in Iran to have tea plantations. Today, it stands to have the largest area of tea cultivation in Iran. "Lahijan Spring Tea" is the best quality tea produced in the country.

Prince Mohammad Mirza known as "Kashef-ol-Saltaneh" who was born in Lahijan was the first mayor of Tehran. As the Iranian ambassador to India under British rule, he knew the British would not allow him to learn about the secrets of tea production, as it was their biggest business in India at the time. So being fluent in French, the prince pretended to be a French laborer and started to work in the tea plantations and factories to learn how to produce tea. Later he secretly took some samples back to Iran. His tomb in Lahijan is now part of the "Iran Tea Museum".

Lahijan is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in Gilan. (source: wikipedia)
