My new niece Reemas, nicknamed as Rammosa. it's her first time to appear online. She was born last May just two weeks before my college graduation in the USA. I didn't have the chance to take pictures of her, because I find it challenging to do young children photography.

Summer Light

My nice Awrad posing to my camera at my house in Kuwait. Summer in Kuwait is very hot as usual, I preferred to take in-house portraits of her. I brought her close to the guest room door to have natural light on left side. The door was behind her where it brought sunlight to the back of her head. As for the right side's secret, it was natural light coming from a silver reflector held very close to her face. The place was much darker than it seems to be from the photo. The yellowish tones purpose is support the feel of the Middle Eastern summer heat.

NEWS:
I left Kuwait on 8/16/2008 early morning returning to the states for my school. My summer break back home was short, and the heat didn't allow me to enjoy the time properly. Tomorrow is day 1 in the new academic year here, I'll be a senior dental student, which means it will be the last year of my 8-year college education hopefully "enshallah".

Welcome to one of the local neighborhoods of Kuwait.
a self-portrait in a fereej style. Taken in front of my house in Al-Qurain, Kuwait.
It was a practice session for using speedlites (flashes) with soft-box.

I intended to take pictures outside just after sunrise to avoid the day's extreme heat. Now the place was softly lit by sunlight, but it would be challenging to make interesting portrait since the light was still low. That's why I used flashes (speedlites) with one softbox to lighten the model (me) so I could separate him from the background. To do this technique, I had to underexpose the sun light by using a higher shutter speed to give a look of darkness, but the colors of the place were preserved. My objective was to create a pleasant contrast between the model and the place. I could have made the background more blurry by using wider aperture, but I used a value of f/5.6 in my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L because it provides sharper images. People might think about using telephoto lens here, I resisted the use of EF 70-200mm f/2.8L. Because I might end up having too blurry background which leads to the loss of the place's identity, this would contraindicate with the photo's main idea. So let's keep it simple, folks :)

On October 18, 2008 in Morgantown, West Virginia. I had one of my most favorite fashion like photo-shoots with the help of my former classmate Rebecca. Dr. Rebecca is a general dentist now working somewhere in West Virginia. I kept this photo from the public from exactly one year, I decided to post it on Flickr for the 1st anniversary of that project. This is my first time to be away from the US autumn since 2001, I really miss this beautiful season. It is more challenging to find interesting time and place for photography here in Kuwait. But I'll definitely do some outdoors once the weather becomes cooler. The way I developed my own style in image editing, is by looking at large number of Western advertisements, magazines, commercials and other sorts of media. In addition to some tips from online tutorials and pro photographers.
