The "Yuba Train" (as my wife calls it) continues to get a lot of use.

Although it has about 30 lbs of work electric assist gear on board, tonight she took the scenic route to dinner and back and never used the electric assist.

It was a fun fitness ride, and my daughter was added a significant contribution through her own pedaling as well.

At 5, our daughter already has a good sense of when to shift gears on the Piccolo, helps us to get the most out of her contribution.

Tomorrow she may attempt a solo grocery trip with two kids by bike.

taking the lane on US 27

My wife and I both took the lane as we rode our bikes down US 27 today in Richmond, Indiana, each us with a kid on board.

I'm glad we did. The cars all moved over to the second lane and passed us with plenty of room.

Hugging the gutter would have been an invitation for cars to attempt to share the lane with us, passing with little room to spare.

You can see from my wife's expression that the road conditions on this stretch are still not particularly welcoming to cyclists, but it's difficult to get back and forth from the north side of town without crossing a bridge which is in the background.

I biked downtown to the Farmer's Market with my children. The baby quickly fell asleep under the weather canopy, which provided complete rain protection as well as some greenhouse-effect insulation.

The four year old rode her own bike on the sidewalks, in her dalmation-print rain jack and red rubber boots. She was also soon oblivious to the rain drops which sometimes fell.

recycling trip

A short clip showing how I cleaned out a giant mass of recyclables out of my basement and hauled them with an electric cargo bike and trailer to be recycled. It was about 15 mile round trip at 30F.

With the electric assist, I had the option to actually expend less effort than I would have on a recreational ride on a standard bike.

These are the new bike racks in the 800 block of Main Street in Richmond, Indiana.

From here it was a short walk to the Winter Farmer's Market happening at the Innovation Center.

The library was hosting an "Alternative Gift Fair" where we could purchase donations to local non-profits in lieu of material presents for our family and friends.

A bit more about the racks: I selected the location and rack style for these. There are a number of bike commuters that work in the building in the background as well a restaurant. Some of the brick walkway is also used for bike parking when bikes are present, with room left over to walk behind them.

It was easy to lock all three of our unusual bike styles to these versatile racks. By contrast, trying to park our fleet at the Morrison Reeves Library on their "schoolyard rack" was a hassle. The MRL racks weren't designed with small wheels in mind, and we could only lock a front wheel at best with the other bikes. We had to left the little bike into the air to lock it with a U-lock, and we locked the cargo bikes to each other.

Aaron is helping a family set up a new house by deliverying a new refrigerator to them.

It was easy work for an electric Yuba Mundo cargo bike and the Bikes-at-Work trailer.

I believe any bike ride is improved if the passengers are happy.

And I have to say, stopping at creeks to throw rocks really isn't that bad, except for that one time when she was scooting rocks over the edge of the bridge with her flip flops... and one of the flip flops went overboard, too.

On board our two bikes we collectively were carrying a 3 year old and 3 month old, a kid's bike, a watermelon, 12 ears of corn, and a zuchinni large enough to be registered as a lethal weapon. We also had some "misc" stuff including a couple bike locks and diaper bag and a couple other bags of farmer's market produce.

We used the Cardinal Greenway to connect with a neighborhood on the other side of town.

You can see much of the bike that the baby is in-- it's a bakfiets, while my wife is riding an electric Yuba Mundo

I took some L. on some training rides as I prepared for my first long trip on the Big Dummy... a 60 mile day trip to Oxford, OH and back (which would be sans child and kid seat).

The trip went well and the bike was enjoyable to ride that distance. Co-rider Becky published further photos and details about the trip on her blog.

This combination worked extremely well to haul two children and a generous amount of cargo. The electric assist handles the extra effort the additional weight requires, so that the rig still travels at typical bike speeds with reasonable pedaling effort.

We rode out through the country side to Greens Fork for lunch. Electric assist on the Yuba Mundo made hauling the 2 year old comfortable on the 30 mile round trip (the child is hidden the rider in this photo). Indeed, the cargo bike was the fastest vehicle on the trip, despite it's extra heft.

The trailer is the short version of the "Bikes at Work" trailer. It looks like a heavy rig and it is, but it's also surprisingly fast. It takes about all this weight to slow the bike down to average speed and effort levels after the electric assist is applied.
