On a photo wander with my friend Aaron, he spotted this fence around a tree in front of the Parliament Buildings. We admired how the setting sun's light played on the full circle curve of the fence, and wondered what kind of tree would warrant this kind of protection. A plaque at the base named it a Chinese Empress Tree, perhaps with royal roots?

It was an overcast morning when I started on a photo walk this day, but as noon approached the clouds disappeared and the sun was full on. I normally don't shoot under those conditions, but found a good angle for back lighting on these little dainties carpeting the ground.

For the two macro shots in this montage, I used an old lens that I converted to a macro lens to get up good and close.

DIY macro lens: Take the Canon EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 lens (mine came with my old film Rebel kit), remove the front element by taking out the three screws in front, and voilà! The electronic connections remain intact, so all the lens functions are still available for TTL metering, aperture setting, etc.

The fawn lilies have been out for the last few weeks. One of the prettiest spring flowers in this area.

I joined a Flickr group dedicated to posting pictures of fences. I'm definitely paying attention to fences more now, even seeking them out, which led me to discovering this small park I never saw before right downtown.

This is my first submission: Classic fence spikes done straight-up black & white with shallow depth of field.

Once in a while, fog rolls into Beacon Hill Park from the nearby ocean. It's quite a sight! We were fortunate to be picnicking there with cameras in hand when it happened on Good Friday.

I found out on this trip that Tofino, on the wild west coast of Canada, is also known as Tough (or Tuff) City to the locals. I don't know how I missed that before.

Chinese new year celebrations were held in Chinatown today, with lion dancing performed by members of the Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club.

The lion dancers made their way down Fan Tan Alley to spread good luck for the new year to the vendors who offered them the traditional red money envelopes.

A Little Off

Just a fun, impulse shot. I was surprised to see a stone block out of line along the breakwater, which prompted me to play with the angles here.

After I took the shot, a passerby commented on the force it must have took to move the stone like that. Must have been quite the storm!

Birds and other small animals live on the breakwater. I hope they won't be too disturbed by the construction of the new handrails over the next several weeks.
