This image is part of a collection of photos by Harry Brisbane Williams. The Williams photographic collection provides an interesting record of a range of activities on Sydney Harbour from the 1890s into the 1920s. An enthusiastic amateur boater and photographer, Williams’ photographs capture a range of subjects – pleasure cruising on his motor launch on the Lane Cove River, yachting on Sydney Harbour, foreshore social activities, surf lifesaving, cargo ships, battle cruisers of the United States fleet, model yachting and the shipbuilding industry. In particular, they are a wonderful personal record of the new phenomenon of leisure motor boating in the early twentieth century.
Warship, ketch, yachts and spectator craft at Farm Cove, Sydney

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William Hall collection. The Hall collection combines photographs from both William J Hall and his father William Frederick Hall - the latter of which is likely to have taken this image. The images provide an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races.

This is likely to be the 'historical events' and special presentation performed at the Anniversary Day Regatta near the flagship THEMISTOCLES at Cremorne Point on 26 January 1933. 'The Sydney Morning Herald' reported on this aspect of the day's festivities:

'Variety was given to the harbour scene by a representation of a huge sea serpent being propelled, apparently without effort, around the flagship, followed by a miniature "Ark Ararat" and other small craft symbolical of historical events.'
Sea serpent and boats at the Anniversary Day Regatta at Cremorne Point

This is likely to be the 'historical events' and special presentation performed at the Anniversary Day Regatta near the flagship THEMISTOCLES at Cremorne Point on 26 January 1933. 'The Sydney Morning Herald' reported on this aspect of the day's festivities:

'Variety was given to the harbour scene by a representation of a huge sea serpent being propelled, apparently without effort, around the flagship, followed by a miniature "Ark Ararat" and other small craft symbolical of historical events.'

This image is part of a collection of photos by Harry Brisbane Williams. The paddle steamer MARION was built in 1897 by H. Landseer and the vessel's last trip was in June 1963. PILOT was built in 1883 by A. Graham at Goolwa, and sailed until 1961.
