The Cubical, a cracking band introduced to me by www.flickr.com/photos/87645524@N04/ Lynne Gavaghan. I Know Lynne through a talk I did at St Helens camera camera club and I am very proud of what she has achieved with her 365 photo project. I have been there myself, I know how hard it is.

This was a cracking gig at MelloMello in Slater St in Liverpool, top respect to them for adding me on the guest list. Some cracking beers on down there and I will be back for the vegan grub.

The band were like a road crash between blues and rock and roll, make sure you catch them if you are local. Track down their Myspace at www.myspace.com/thecubicalthecubical
I will be back at Mello Mello ( catch them on Twitter at @MelloMelloCafe ) for some of those great cakes....

Skin of the late 1990's rock band Skunk Anansie, back together to plug their latest 15 cut compilation 'Smashes and Trashes'.

Skin has done some solo stuff but not really hit the peaks of Stoosh and Paranoid and Sunburnt.
SA were on top form tonight at the Wolverhampton Civic. Coincidentally the city xmas lights were switched on this night too, with fireworks.
However the best show was in the Civic with Skin body surfing down to the bottom of the hall& back, then doing a lap of the circle. A brilliant performance and two new tracks chucked in to boot!

Dave Vanian (born David Lett, 12 October 1956, Hemel Hempstead, England) is a rock musician, famous for being the lead singer of the punk rock band The Damned. The band formed in 1976 in London and Vanian is the only ever-present member of the group. They were the first of the British punk bands to release a single, an album, have a record hit the UK charts, and tour the United States.

Lett changed his name to Dave Vanian (pronounced as in "Transylvanian") when he became a musician, having previously worked as a gravedigger.

He was one of the early influencers of gothic fashion by wearing dark and otherworldly clothing both on-stage and off. In November 1976, the British music magazine, NME, commented that Vanian "resembles a runaway from The Addams Family".

This was a cracking gig at The Parr Hall in Warrington 5th May 2012.
Support was from Utopian Love Revival.
Babybird's Stephen Jones, Manchester Band On The Wall Friday 2012-01-27

Hotpix [LRPS] Hanx for 1.5M Views posted a photo:

Babybird are a British indie band formed in 1995. The band is fronted by Stephen Jones, who has also released records as a solo artist, using his own name.

Jones had begun writing songs and recording home demos as part of an experimental theatre group in Sheffield. A collection of these demos, I Was Born a Man, was released in July 1995, under the name Babybird. He recruited a band made up of Huw Chadbourn (keyboards), Robert Gregory (drums), John Pedder (bass) and Luke Scott (guitar), in order to tour and promote his work.

During 1995, two further albums of demo recordings were released under the name Babybird (Bad Shave and Fatherhood) and two in 1996 (The Happiest Man Alive and Dying Happy). Babybird were signed to Echo Records (a division of the Chrysalis Group), and the first authentic single, a full-band recording of "Goodnight", which had appeared in demo form on Fatherhood, was released in July 1996, becoming a minor hit in the UK Singles Chart. The group's second single, "You're Gorgeous", reached number 3 in the UK in October 1996, and was one of the biggest selling singles of the year, going on to chart around the world.

Stephen can laugh about it on tour, but "You're Gorgeous" set a difficult precident to follow. It hurts so much that it rarely gets played nowadays, more a millstone around his and Babybirds neck. Arguably, the commercial sound and success of "You're Gorgeous", which received massive exposure by comparison, made it hard for many to take Jones seriously as an indie artist. Essentially, what he was best at was no longer what he was best known for, after it.

Stephen Jones has produced two works of fiction, The Bad Book in 2000 and Harry and Ida Swop Teeth (also the title of a Babybird b-side) in 2003. He also collaborated with DED Associates, who have designed many of his CD covers, on a 2000 art book Travel Sickness.

The tracks on the set list to play on the night were as follows:

Black Flowers
The Life
Can't Love You Anymore
Like Them

Babybird's Stephen Jones, Manchester Band On The Wall Friday 2012-01-27

Peter Hook (New Order & Joy Division) and The Light, The Castle warm up gig, Oldham, Manchester, UK 16-11-2011

A cold evening in Oldham, with the town centre being dug up, a classic back catalog from the early JD & Warsaw days. What more could you ask for? A special warm up for a unique tour.

Well I saw Joy Division a couple of times, the same number of times I have been to see the memoral to Ian Curtis in Macclesfield. You can be forgiven for expecting a lot.

I have got to say, Hooky and The Light made a good job of it. The Castle reminded me of the Russell Club in Hulme, it just needed lower ceilings. Down to about 7'.

Rowetta was here too. The EP containing unreleased Joy Division track ‘Pictures In My Mind’, ‘Atmosphere’ plus Rowetta’s versions of ‘New Dawn Fades’ and ‘Insight’ are worth a download, see www.fac51thehacienda.com/node/2088

Everything sounded raw, stripped down. Particularly the Closer album tracks, the young folks will only know them with the Hannett gloss of polished production.

Hooky's voice is slightly rough and Mancunian too. He needed some pages of his lyric book. Theres no robotic dancing either, and not so much bass playing. He leaves much to Jack, although rips into it as an axe-man when he gets in the mood. Breaks a string too on the Eccleshall Viking 1 (in Red with Cream Binding), so then it becomes more of a prop.

Rowetta's 'Atmosphere' was a highlight for me. Maybe all along that track needed female vocals.

Overall Hooky did good. He wrote this stuff, its in his soul. Thats why he wants to tour and share it, he is certainly not doing for the cash!

Setlist on the night included:

Its been a while Howard...

I last saw Magazine at the Manchester Academy 1 on valentines day 2009, much to the consternation of 'er indoors. Since then they have recorded a new album on record label Wire Sound. 'No Thyself' is the first for three decades. Legendary bass player Barry Adamson left to concentrate on his film work and solo recordings. Jon "Stan" White has taken over his bass.

The procedings started with some placards from Howard "You Do The Meaning" (which is a track from the new album) and "Fly Away To The World" after a Japanese kabuki intro. The old favourite 'Definitive Gaze' is first up. The sound mix seemed shaky at first, poor sound is said to have dogged a few opening gigs. Howards vocals seemed by the middle of definitive gaze.

Once introduced as Magazine version 6.0 service pack 1, they ploughed into "Give Me Everything". The excitement and the pogo-ing (yes, old men too..) started.

The full set list was:

Definitive Gaze
Give Me Everything
Motorcade
Happening in English
Howard Devoto, John Doyle of Magazine, performing "The Light Pours Out Of Me", Manchester Academy 2011-11-04

John Foxx was born in Chorley, Lancashire, England and probably best known for his early days as lead singer of late 1970's band Ultravox!

The group's style fused punk, glam, electronic, reggae and new wave music. At this early time they were defined by the album 'Systems Of Romance', an album produced by Kraftwerk associate Connie Plank. Its justly regarded as the first synthpop album.

Foxx left Ultravox after a 1980 US tour and was signed to Virgin. He was way ahead of his time with the Metamatic and Garden albums, the singles 'Burning Car' & 'Underpass'. In 1985 he gave up his music career to become a graphic artist. In the 1990's he did re-emerge with a synth-pop sound. A trickle of releases and remixes have followed.

John Foxx And The Maths are touring the UK during October 2011. They will be performing material from their new album Interplay as well as classic songs from early Ultravox and John’s solo career. This includes material from his pioneering debut album, 1980′s Metamatic.

The tour started in Leamington Spa, then Bristol Thekla, I saw them Friday the 21st of October, 2011 at the Manchester Academy 4. Special guest was Tara Busch.

The last album Interplay is a collaboration between Foxx and electronic composer and synthesizer collector, Benge (Ben Edwards). The latter is best known for his 2008 album Twenty Systems, which was described by Brian Eno as a ‘Brilliant contribution to the archaeology of electronic music.’

The band are from left to right, Hannah Peel (Keyboards / Violin), John Foxx, Benge (Ben Edwards on drums) and Serafina Steer (on Keyboards, Bass).

The Shape Of Things limited edition double CD will also be available at the John Foxx And The Maths shows and then after via the Official John Foxx Store

A bit about her from her Bio: In 2001, a friend introduced her to drummer Dave Heyes, who had recently finished a stint of gigs with Elvis Costello. After attending one of Maria’s gigs, Heyes quickly became a fixture in her band. In 2005, Maria came across producer John Kettle (Tansads/High Holy Days/The Marble Index). Together, they recorded a three-song demo. “Once I was in the studio and heard the magic of my music coming to life, I knew that this was where things were going to change forever,” Maria says. Within a few months, Maria had five major record labels and publishers interested. She set up a showcase in London and traveled there with the band.

“The sound was bigger and better than ever before. From there I got a fantastic reaction from the labels who wanted to hear more.” In the summer of 2006 Maria and Dave established the indie label JTC Records, and they released the single “Love Of My Life” which went on to receive national airplay. Soon after this Maria returned to the studio to record her debut album “Landslide”.

The timeless Johnny Clark ('the name behind the Hairstyle'), the Bard of Salford with his ring bound scribblings, on stage at the Stanley Theatre. He was on a bill with 'The Temps' and Mark E Smiths 'The Fall'.

He had changed little since I first saw him at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in 1978, although he is now pushing 62.

His early work, including the essential 'Disguise In Love' used backing from 'The Invisible Girls', which featured Martin Hannett, the producer. Clarke was born in Salford, Lancashire in 1949. His first job was a laboratory technician at the University of Salford. He began his performance career in Manchester folk clubs, where he began working with Rick Goldstraw and his band The Ferrets. His first releases were on the independent label Rabid, starting with the EP Innocents in October 1977. He toured with Bill Nelson's band Be-Bop Deluxe in 1978 and was signed by Epic Records, who issued the Nelson-produced debut album Disguise In Love in 1978.

Sadly, he spent much of the 1980s addicted to heroin, living in a "domestic partnership" with singer and fellow addict Nico (of the Velvet Underground). He made an appearance in two UK adverts for Sugar Puffs in 1988, taking second billing to the Honey Monster. Quite often these days he takes second billing from MES and The Fall.

His set included Beasley St, the updated Beasley Boulavard (now the poem has had some investment from Urban Splash), Chicken Town, Hire Car and the brilliant 'Bongos Trousers'. This is a satirical take on the effects of U2's Bono struggling to save the world and have an audience with the pope minus his kecks.

Brilliant Stuff! - Listen to it here, live from the gig (Adults Only).
John Cooper Clarke at the Stanley Theatre, Liverpool University UK 02-07-2011

Extreme metal rock band Exhibit A. Live at a Banned! Network gig at The Rec' Winnington Park, Northwich, Cheshire.

The band are based in Stoke on Trent and have had notable mentions and reviews in Metal Hammer magazine. The band are Jon - vocals, Bez on vocals, Wiv with Bass guitar, Caci and Sam on Guitar and drums from Jay. If anyone would like me to dig any more shots out of my archives, leave a comment or a Flickr mail.

The setlist on the night was:

Personification of People
Show me the words
Blind for trying
Death of Love
Network gig, Winnington, Northwich, Cheshire UK 17-12-2010" />

Spires take traditional heavy metal into the next dimension! These metal lads from Manchester fuse the technical parts of various metal styles be it black, death or even prog together into an excellent blend that is both intelligent as well as lethally heavy. Centred around the brainchild of vocalist, guitarist and producer Paul Sadler who's now assembled a band of equally talented musicians, Spires awe by their ability to roll from acoustics to power riffing to techno death (or even all three) on songs like 'The Infinite Descent', 'Spiral of Ascension' and 'Martyr'.

This Winnington Rec' Banned! gig was shared with AQOE (A Question Of Etiquette), Kensington Arms from Holland.

Good on Nick Hughes and The Banned Network for keeping these gigs on in these dire ConDem times of recession.

As the Myspace biog says... "A Question Of Etiquette are a five piece Death Metal band from Northwich who formed in 2009.With there energetic riffs, brutal breakdowns and lively stage presence promises to keep the pits moving and cause as much destruction as possible. With there demo e.p now released summer 2010

A Question Of Etiquette hope to keep raising the bar and destroy the UK... Their lyrical concept is born through the hatred that many of us have grown up with through our lives, the people we know, hate and love and the pure passion that drives us to aim as far we can... The band aim for a fresh melodic sound, yet maintaining an extreme yet old school feel to the music, forever hoping to progress through time, and with the dedication and drive we all have we believe this is possible"

This Winnington Rec' Banned! gig was opened by Spires, Kensington Arms from Holland and topped off by AQOE (A Question Of Etiquette).

The AQOE set included 'Hold Tight', Divided, AQOE, Innovations, 'Visions of a sleeping god'and Brainless.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here

A track from the late great Phil Lynott. I heard this live finishing up a set at the Manchester Apollo in 1979 I think, December time.

The band often used to finish up with this track in celebration of a guy called Ted Carroll. He had brought the band to London from Dublin in the early 70's and he ran a Saturday record stall called 'Rock On' on Golborne Road, Off Ladbroke Grove market.

Carroll was involved with early Chiswick label artists and the founders of Stiff records (motto 'If it aint Stiff, it aint worth a f**k). Thus was instrumental in producing and pressing a great many of the 70's vinyls in my loft. He never was involved in a Thin Lizzy release however, Decca and Phongram were the bands labels, with the former involved with the band releasing an album of Deep Purple covers.

Thin Lizzy's leader, Lynott was composer or co-composer of almost all their songs. He was one of the few black men to achieve commercial success in hard rock, and was certainly the first black Irishman to do so. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities.

For a great introduction to Thin Lizzy, the live album 'Live and Dangerous' is your only option. There is some disagreement over just how much of the album is actually recorded live. Producer Tony Visconti claimed that the only parts that weren't overdubbed were the drums and the audience. However Brian Robertson has refuted this, saying that he had refused Lynott's request to re-record a guitar solo, and that the only overdubs were backing vocals and some guitar parts by Gorham. He added, "It's just not true. The only reason we said that it was recorded all over was obviously for tax reasons... so everything that Visconti claims is boll**ks.

Listen for yourself and make your own mind up :-)

The Fender Cyclone was a series of electric guitars made by Fender. Introduced in late 1997, the Cyclone body is similarly styled to the Mustang but with a significantly different specification. The body of the Cyclone is a quarter of an inch thicker than the body of a Mustang and is made of poplar, whereas contemporary Mustang reissues were made of basswood.

The Fender Cyclone was discontinued in 2007.

Solitary are a Lancashire based rock/metal band. They are Richard Sherrington (original member) on vox & guitars, Roy Miller on drums, Andy Mellor on lead guitar and Mike Park on Bass. They are caught here at the Winnington Halloween gig in some more than usual fancy dress.

Solitary formed in Preston 1994 and signed to UK label Holier Than Thou Records in 1997, they made their first appearance on the HTT compilation “Genetically Fresh” which attracted interest from the JMG Agency who lined up support slots with Kill 2 This, Reign and Deranged from Sweden. May the following year Solitary record “Nothing Changes” Solitary then embarked on two UK tours to promote the album, which was released in November 1998.

In 2008 a new album “Requiem”, over a four-year period fraught with personal highs and lows the band created a 'Thrash Metal Monster', which was hailed as a must for the fans of Testament, God Forbid, Slayer or The Haunted. Influenced by the aforementioned bands and the 80’s Bay Area bands.

“Requiem” contains a guest vocal appearance from Chris Astley of 80’s Thrashers Xentrix on the track “Hatred” the CD also has cover of Testament’s “Into the Pit”. When writing the album Solitary used inspirational albums such as “Slaughter of the Soul”, “ The Gathering”, “ A New Darkness Upon Us” and “Gone Forever” as reference points to help them create the same feeling as those albums generated when they first heard them whether or not they’ve done that remains to be seen.

The artwork created by bassist Michael Park uses the original cover of a book published in 1736. The band are also shooting a video for “Keep Your Enemies Closer” in early September as well as having tracks on the CD cover mounts on Metal Hammer and Terrorizer in the UK.

If you have chance, catch a gig. See whats coming up at www.solitary.org.uk

Robert Cray live at Warrington Parr Hall, Cheshire, England UK 2012-06-30

A shot from an excellent night at Warringtons Parr Hall (I am glad to say my local venue is upping its game) with Robert Cray and his band. I must say I had pretty much the worst seat in the place and only by blagging an empty seat in the row behind, managed to get a decent view.

The brilliant set played on the night which is apparently not aranged in advance with the band included: I shiver, Worry, The Things You Do To Me, Bad Influence, Dont You Even Care, It Doesn't Show, On The Road Down, I'll always Remember You, Phone Booth, Poor Johnny, I Can't Fail, Smoking Gun, Chicken In The Kitchen and Still A Man.

The Robert Cray UK June Tour takes in The London BluesFest 2012 at the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, The Glasgow O2 ABC, Birmingham Town Hall, The Holmfirth Picturedrome, Reading Sub89 and The Brighton Concorde2 (July 2012).

Robert Cray (born August 1, 1953, Columbus, Georgia, United States) is an American blues guitarist and singer. A five-time Grammy Award winner, he has led his own band, as well as an acclaimed solo career.

Cray was signed to Mercury Records in 1982. His third album release, Strong Persuader, produced by Dennis Walker, received a Grammy Award, while the crossover single "Smokin' Gun" gave him wider appeal and name recognition.

By now, Cray was an opening act for such major stars as Eric Clapton (who remains a friend to this day), and sold out larger venues as a solo artist. Cray has generally played Fender guitars (Telecasters and Stratocasters) and there are two signature Robert Cray Stratocasters models available from Fender. The Robert Cray Custom Shop Stratocaster is made in the United States in the Fender custom shop and is identical to the guitars that Cray currently plays, while the Robert Cray Standard Stratocaster is a less-expensive model made in Fender's Ensenada, Mexico plant.

Cray had the opportunity to play alongside John Lee Hooker on his album Boom Boom, playing the guitar solo in the song "Same Old Blues Again". He is also featured on the Hooker album, The Healer; he plays a guitar solo on the song "Baby Lee". The entire Robert Cray Band backs Hooker on the title track of Hooker's 1992 album "Mr. Lucky", where Cray plays lead guitar, sings, and banters with Hooker throughout the song.

Cray was invited to play at the "Guitar Legends" concerts in Seville, Spain at the 1992 Expo, where he played a signature track, "Phone Booth". Albert Collins was also on the bill on this blues night of the "Legends" gigs.

Cray continues to record and tour. He appeared at the Crossroads Guitar Festival, and supported Eric Clapton on his 2006-2007 world tour. In Fargo, North Dakota, he joined Clapton on backup guitar for the Cream song "Crossroads". In 2011, Cray was inducted to the Blues Hall of Fame
