A track with a tale of what you reap is what you sow.

"Cat's in the Cradle" is a 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapin from the album Verities & Balderdash. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. As Chapin's only number one hit song, it became the best known of his work and a staple for folk rock music.

The song was based upon a poem written by Harry's wife Sandy; the poem itself was inspired by the awkward relationship between her first husband, James Cashmore, and his father, a New York City politician. She was also inspired by a country music song she had heard on the radio. Harry has also said that the song was about his father-son relationship with his son, Josh, saying that "Frankly, this song scares me to death".

The song is told in first-person by a father who is too busy to spend time with his son. Though the son asks him to join in childhood activities, the father always responds with little more than vague promises of spending time together in the 'future'. While wishing to spend time with his father, the son starts to model himself on his father's behaviour, hence the verse wishing to be "just like him.".

The final two verses are a reverse of the roles, where the father asks his grown-up son to visit, but the son responds that he is now too busy to find the time for his father. The father then reflects that they are both alike, saying "my boy was just like me." The song's chorus uses imagery related to childhood Cat's in the Cradle, Silver Spoon, Little Boy Blue, Man in the Moon.

This track was covered by the band 'Ugly Kid Joe' which sold over half a million in Australia. It was also used in the British Government Don't Suffer It, Change it / Despairs In The Cradle campaign in Northern Ireland mid 1980's - www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTWXDY1lJMY

This is a panorama of four hipstamatic shots taken on an iphone stiched together. It was taken in Manchester's Northern Quarter.

John Cooper Clarke (born 25 January 1949) is an English performance poet who first became famous during the punk rock era of the late 1970s when he became known as a "punk poet".[1] He released several albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and continues to perform regularly.

His recorded output has mainly centred around musical backing from The Invisible Girls, which featured Martin Hannett, Pete Shelley, Bill Nelson, Paul Burgess and Steve Hopkins.

His first releases were on the independent label Rabid, starting with the EP Innocents in October 1977. He toured with Bill Nelson's band Be-Bop Deluxe in 1978 and was signed by Epic Records, who issued the Nelson-produced debut album Disguise In Love in 1978.

In 1979 he had his only UK top 40 hit with "Gimmix! (Play Loud)". Clarke toured with Linton Kwesi Johnson, and has performed on the same bill as bands such as Sex Pistols, The Fall, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Elvis Costello, Rockpile, and New Order (including at their May 1984 Music for Miners benefit concert at London's Royal Festival Hall). His set is characterised by lively, rapid-fire renditions of his poems, usually performed a cappella. Often referred to as "the bard of Salford", he usually refers to himself on stage as "Johnny Clarke, the name behind the hairstyle".

This mural which is just on the gable end of Cord bar is just around the corner from Tib St, the old seedy street that used to be home to pet shops and sex shops. These days its more arty bars, nice cafes and music venues. Still a bit seedy, reassuringly!

John Foxx And The Maths is a musical project featuring electronic music pioneers John Foxx and Benge. The duo were initially a studio based project working from Benge's studio in Shoreditch, London but have also engaged in live work. They specialise in the use of analogue synthesisers and drum machines and have released two albums, Interplay and The Shape of Things, both in 2011.

You will perhaps know John Foxx as a founder member of 1970's band Ultravox. In December 2009 the official John Foxx website Metamatic announced Foxx's new musical project. Benge had already broken the news on his own blog in November calling The Maths "a new album project".

An initial single Destination / September Town was released in December 2009 as download only from Townsend Records and later via i-tunes. The duo continued to work in Benge's studio in Shoreditch throughout 2010 and some new tracks were previewed at the Short Circuit electronic music festival held at The Roundhouse in London on 5 June 2010.

A new album entitled Interplay was announced in January 2011containing this track and released on March 21. The official website described the album as "moody and atmospheric, but also full of songs that are actually more ”pop” than avant garde, Interplay pulls various strands of electronic music together – from early electro to 70s Krautrock, even flashes of Cabaret Voltaire and Foxx’s first band, Ultravox!"
The album gained much critical acclaim with The Quietus calling it "one of the finest electronic records you will hear in 2011.

Weddings are big business and many people looking to tie the knot visit wedding catwalk shows in hotels etc, deciding how they are going to spend the average of over £12K on their event and honeymoon. As anyone who knows me I am not a big believer in the institution, but I had an interesting day photographing the catwalk show at the Holiday Inn Wilmslow, near Manchester Airport..

"Because the Night" is a song by the Patti Smith Group, written by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith which was released as a single in 1978, taken from Smith's album Easter. The song was a hit, rising to #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and helping propel sales of Easter to mainstream success – even as Smith was deciding to retire from a life of constant touring. The song remains one of the best known of Smith's catalog.

In 1987, "Because the Night" by Patti Smith Group was ranked number 116 on NME magazine's list of "The Top 150 Singles of All Time"

The original song was recorded by Bruce Springsteen during sessions for his Darkness on the Edge of Town album. He was not satisfied with it; the Patti Smith Group was working on Easter in the studio next door, with engineer/producer Jimmy Iovine working on both albums.

Lovine gave Smith a tape of the song, she recast it, and it was included on Easter, becoming the first single released from that album. Though it was never released on any of Springsteen's studio albums, in concert beginning with his Darkness Tour Springsteen would often perform the song with his own lyrics. The song was first performed live (with Patti Smith) at CBGB's in New York City on December 30, 1977.

Until the 2010 release of Springsteen's box set The Promise, which included the original recording from the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions, the only commercially released recording of a Springsteen version of the song was in the 1986 box set Live/1975–85, where Smith was listed as co-writer.

Ronald James Padavona (July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010), better known as Ronnie James Dio, was an American heavy metal vocalist and songwriter.

He performed with, amongst others, Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band Dio. Other musical projects include the collective fundraiser Hear 'n Aid. He was widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice.

I only ever saw him on stage once, with Rainbow at Stafford's New Bingley Hall in about 1980.

He often ranks as one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time in various online polls and lists. He is credited with popularizing the "metal horns" hand gesture in metal culture.

Prior to his death, he was collaborating on a project with former Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice, under the moniker Heaven & Hell, whose only studio album, The Devil You Know, was released on April 28, 2009.

Dio sadly died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010. One of the last songs he recorded was titled "Metal Will Never Die".

The Sandbach Crosses are two 9th-century stone Anglo-Saxon crosses now erected in the market place in the town of Sandbach, Cheshire, England. They are unusually large and elaborate examples of the type and have been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building, and are a scheduled monument.

The most recent and authoritative dating places the larger cross from the early part of the 9th century, and the smaller from about the middle of that century. Older theories, now outdated, included the view that they were erected to commemorate the conversion to Christianity of Peada of Mercia about 653.

Other sources date them to the 9th century. The original site of the crosses is unknown and it is believed that they were brought to Sandbach in the Middle Ages. The earliest documentary evidence is by William Smith, the Rouge-Dragon Pursuivant at Arms of Elizabeth I, who was from Nantwich.

In 1585 he wrote 'two square crosses of stone, on steps, with certain images and writings thereon graven [standing] hard together. Either after the Reformation or during the Civil War they were thrown down and their parts were scattered over a wide area.

Larger pieces of the crosses were found as far away as Oulton and Tarporley while smaller pieces were found on various sites in Sandbach. In the early 19th century they were collected together and in 1816 were reassembled and erected under the direction of George Ormerod, the Cheshire historian.

The crosses now consist of two upright columns set in sockets on a base of three stepped stones. The northern cross is the taller and has a mutilated head. The southern cross is truncated and has a mutilated head from a different cross.

The crosses have always been a pair and were carved by the same hand. They depict religious scenes, doll-like heads and beasts in panels, together with vine-scrolls, course interlace patterns and some dragons. Yep, here be dragons!

The Motels are a New Wave music band from the Los Angeles area best known for "Only the Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer", each of which peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Their song "Total Control" reached no 4 on the Australian charts in 1980. Martha Davis (born January 19, 1951), the lead singer, reformed a version of the band called "The Motels featuring Martha Davis" in 1998; as of 2010 she continues to appear under that name with various line-ups of musicians.

In March 1978, Davis and lead guitarist Jeff Jourard (formerly of a pre-fame version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) decided to reform his early 70's band, The Motels. Extensive auditions resulted in a new line-up of the band being formed, consisting of Jourard's brother Marty, who played both the saxophone and keyboards, Michael Goodroe on bass, and Brian Glascock on drums. Short on funds, the band shared rehearsal space with The Go-Go's at L.A.'s notorious punk basement, The Masque, and they played in Chinatown, at Madame Wong's restaurant/nightclub with such regularity that they were almost considered the house band.

The Motels began to draw faithful crowds around the L.A. music scene and on Mother's Day 1979 the group signed with Capitol Records, releasing their debut album The Motels four months later. Their first single, "Closets and Bullets", made no impact on the charts, but their second single release, "Total Control", found its way to the Top 20 in France and the Top 10 in Australia.

In 1980 Jourard was replaced as lead guitarist by Davis' boyfriend Tim McGovern and the band went back into the recording studio to record their second album, Careful. Released in June 1980, the album climbed to the no 45 spot on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S. In Europe and the UK, the songs "Days Are OK" and "Whose Problem?" became Top 50 hits; "Whose Problem?" was also a top hit in Australia and "Danger" was a Top 20 hit in France.

The band hired record producer Val Garay for their third album, Apocalypso. It was scheduled to be released in November 1981, but after Capitol Records heard the final product, they rejected it for being "not commercial enough" and "too weird". The band attempted to go back and re-record the entire album but in the process, Davis and McGovern's relationship dissolved and by December 1981 McGovern was no longer in the band (McGovern subsequently formed the band Burning Sensations).

The rest of the band members forged on to finish recording the new album, utilizing studio musicians to fill in for McGovern on several of the tracks. Adrian Peritore (who went by the name Guy Perry because his former producer had misspelled his name on an album cover) was hired in late January and played lead guitar on some of the tracks, including "He Hit Me". The album was released on April 5, 1982 under the title All Four One.

"Cherry Bomb" is a 1976 punk-influenced hard rock song by the all-girl band The Runaways off of their self-titled debut album. It is widely regarded by many as the band's signature song. "Cherry Bomb" was also ranked 52nd on VH1's 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs.

Singer/guitarist Joan Jett composed the song with the band's then-manager, Kim Fowley, and would later go on to re-record it with her band the Blackhearts for the 1984 album Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth.

The Runaways' version of the song was used in the cult classic film Dazed and Confused, and was featured on its soundtrack album. It can also be heard as a partial cover song by JoJo in the movie RV and was covered by Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart, who played Runaways frontwoman Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, for the 2010 biopic film The Runaways.

The song has been re-recorded by Jett and Currie to be featured in the video game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock as a playable song.

This is one of my favourite tracks from 'Welcome to My Nightmare', the eighth album by Alice Cooper, released in 1975. This was Alice Cooper's first solo album (all previous Alice Cooper releases were band efforts). The cover artwork was created by Drew Struzan for Pacific Eye & Ear. Rolling Stone would later rank it as one of the "Top 100 Album Covers Of All Time".

Welcome to My Nightmare is a concept album. The songs, heard in sequence, form a journey through the nightmares of a child named Steven. Welcome to My Nightmare inspired the Alice Cooper: The Nightmare TV special and a worldwide concert tour in 1975, and the Welcome To My Nightmare concert film in 1976.

The song Welcome to my Nightmare is a parody of the 1968 novel "There's a Nightmare in My Closet" by Mercer Mayer. Famed film actor of the Horror genre Vincent Price provided the introductory monologue in the song "The Black Widow". VP can be seen in the video link.

Alice Cooper was born Vincent Damon Furnier in 1948. He is an American rock singer, songwriter and musician whose career spans more than four decades. With a stage show that features guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors and baby dolls, Cooper has drawn equally from horror movies, vaudeville and garage rock to pioneer a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal designed to shock. He came decades before the likes of Marilyn Manson and others.

This classic GnR track is from The Spaghetti Incident. The album was the fifth and is unique for the band, consisting entirely of cover versions, mostly of punk and glam rock songs of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This was the last Guns N' Roses album to feature lead guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum.

The title is an inside joke referring to a food fight between Axl Rose and Steven Adler involving spaghetti. Much was made of this food fight during Adler's resolution lawsuit with the band in 1993, in which Adler's attorney referred to it as "the Spaghetti Incident". The meaning was explained by drummer Matt Sorum in a 1994 interview with Much Music and confirmed by Slash in his autobiography, 'Slash'.

The album has seen mixed reviews since its release. Rolling Stone magazine gave the album a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Allmusic said "As punk albums go, The Spaghetti Incident? lacks righteous anger and rage. As Guns N' Roses albums go, it's a complete delight, returning to the ferocious, hard-rocking days of Appetite for Destruction".

On Saturday I had the pleasure of seeing one of my favourite newer bands.

I first picked up on the track "Austere" from a music blog I follow called burningworld.blogspot.com/

I espechially like the PodFodder compilations there, that are now up to no 132. There is always some gold nuggets lurking in them and this band are one of them.

The Joy Formidable released "Austere" as a single in July 2008, followed by "Cradle" on double 7" later that summer, and quickly produced an eight-track EP, A Balloon Called Moaning, which they released themselves in the UK in early 2009. Also in 2009 Justin Stahley was replaced by Matt Thomas on drums. Having relocated to London, the trio quickly earned a reputation for blistering live performances.

"We love and encourage the beautiful double-pedal," says Bryan, with a chuckle. "We do lean towards a slightly metal aesthetic when it comes to drums, which makes it very loud and heavy and all the things we want to be as a live entity. The new album definitely explores those elements, and that's because of Matt being in the band."

The trio spent 2009 touring the UK, Europe and Australia with bands including Editors, Temper Trap and Passion Pit, mastering tiny clubs and festival stages alike. Their introduction to American audiences came when Passion Pit invited The Joy Formidable to open a pair of sold-out shows at New York's Terminal 5.

In summer 2010, the band signed with Canvasback Records, and released their cracking debut album "The Big Roar", on 24 January 2011. The band worked on writing and tracking the material for the album when they weren't on the road.

In 2011, the band opened up the main stage at the Reading and Leeds festivals on the Saturday and Sunday respectively. In August 2011, they also opened up for Foo Fighters at a secret show at The Metro the night before they played an opening slot at Lollapalooza.

At the Academy gig, which was absolutely buzzing, they announced that the next album was in the offing, and despite some shouts of abuse, Rhydian would not remove his hat!

"Black Magic Woman" is a song written by Peter Green that first appeared as a Fleetwood Mac single in various countries in 1968, subsequently appearing on the 1969 Fleetwood Mac compilation albums English Rose (US) and The Pious Bird of Good Omen (UK).

In 1970, it became a classic hit by Santana, as sung by Gregg Rolie, reaching no 4 in the U.S. and Canadian charts, after appearing on their Abraxas album, becoming more closely associated with Santana than Fleetwood Mac.

Santana is a band based around guitarist Carlos Santana and founded in the late 1960s. It first came to public attention after their performing the song "Soul Sacrifice" at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, when their Latin rock provided a contrast to other acts on the bill. This initial exposure made their first, eponymous album a hit at the time, followed in the next two years by successful follow-ups Abraxas and Santana III.

Over the next few years, lineup changes were common and frequent, and although retaining a basis of Latin rock, Carlos Santana's increasing involvement with guru Sri Chinmoy took the band further into more esoteric music, which continued for many years, although never quite losing the initial Latin influence.

In 1998, the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with Carlos Santana, Jose Chepito Areas, David Brown, Mike Carabello, Gregg Rolie and Michael Shrieve being honored.

Santana has achieved a total of eight Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards which were all awarded in 2000. Carlos also won two Grammy Awards as a solo artist in 1989 and 2003.

This is a track I remember from the tail end of the Madchester period. A good one to be uplifted from a grey wet Manchester afternoon!

Deee-Lite you may remember was an American house and club/dance group, formed in New York City, United States. The group's best-known single was "Groove Is in the Heart", from their 1990 debut album, World Clique.

The members of Deee-lite were Super DJ Dmitri (Dmitry Brill), Lady Miss Kier,
Towa Tei (Dong-hwa Chung) & DJ Ani.

The tune "Groove is In the Heart" featured lyrics from Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, and bass guitar and vocals by Bootsy Collins.

I was a late convert to the value of disco, but this must be a certain classic.

Kool & the Gang are an American jazz, R&B, soul, funk and disco group, originally formed in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1964. They went through several musical phases during the course of their recording career, starting out with a purist jazz sound, then becoming practitioners of R&B and funk, progressing to a smooth pop-funk ensemble, and in the post-millennium creating music with a modern, electro-pop sound.

The late 1970s saw a lull in Kool & the Gang's except for the album 'Open Sesame' which yielded the title track "Open Sesame" which achieved some success in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. T

hen came new lead singer James "J.T." Taylor who joined the group — with this track from 1979, Ladies' Night. Their number one hit in 1980's "Celebration", from Celebrate!, co-produced by Eumir Deodato. More international hits followed in the early 1980s, including "Big Fun", "Get Down on It", and "Joanna". Their 1984 album Emergency yielded four top-20 pop hits, including "Fresh" and "Cherish". Their chart presence stopped after Forever. Taylor left the group amicably to pursue a solo career.

In Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, town is pronounced ‘toon’, and going out is ‘gannin oot’. Hen and stag nights are big business if ‘yous lot is aal gannin out on the toon!’.

A whole industry has sprung up supporting male strippers, burlesque hen night dance party experiences, casino meals and MTV babes (allegedly..).

Walking around toon on a Saturday night you can see where some of Chris Donald's Viz characters came from. Buster Gonad, The Fat Slags, Sid The Sexist and Brown Bottle are there to be found only a 15 minute walk away from the Quayside. Still, its all a bit of laugh, ,just watch those jelly (jello if you are from the other side of the pond) vodka shots!

A track that nearly brings tears to my eyes, a memory of a very low time.

But why is it that women like shoes so much? Now I am looking for comments from you lady contacts and those male contacts who do appreciate relaxing in nylons and fine Italian leather....

Shoes are beautiful objects, no doubt about that. Nice shoes are a piece of art. It feels good for females to hold them, look at them, and most importantly wear them. Like a nice china pot that can be held and investigated.

Maybe you look at your shoe collection in the same way that an art collector looks at her art collection. Do you have a much better sense of yourself when you wear nice shoes or boots?

When you think about a wardrobe full of shoes, do you feel safe and satisfied? Do you love the feeling of buying new shoes, wearing them and then looking at yourself in a mirror?

Then you might be tempted.........

Squeeze are a British band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the New Wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording successfully in the 1980s and 1990s. They are known in the UK for their hit songs "Cool for Cats", "Up the Junction", "Tempted", "Labelled With Love", "Black Coffee In Bed", "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)", and "Hourglass". Though not quite as commercially successful in the U.S., "Tempted", "Hourglass" and "853-5937" were all American chart hits for Squeeze, and the band have a dedicated following there and continue to attract new fans. All of Squeeze's hits were written by band members Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford.

The group formed in Deptford, London in 1975, and first broke up in 1982. Squeeze then reformed in 1985, and broke up again in 1999.

Sad to hear the death of Amy Jade Winehouse only 27 this last Saturday 23 July 2011, at her home in London.

Police have said that the cause of her death is "as yet unexplained". Her family and friends attended her funeral on 26 July 2011 followed by cremation at Golders Green Crematorium.

Amy Winehouse was an English singer-songwriter known for her powerful deep contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz.

Winehouse's 2003 debut album, Frank, was critically successful in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album, Back to Black, led to six Grammy Award nominations and five wins, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British female to win five Grammys, including three of the "Big Four": Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. On 14 February 2007, she won a BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist; she had also been nominated for Best British Album.

She won the Ivor Novello Award three times, one in 2004 for Best Contemporary Song (musically and lyrically) for "Stronger Than Me", one in 2007 for Best Contemporary Song for "Rehab", and one in 2008 for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for "Love Is a Losing Game", among other distinctions. The album was the third biggest seller of the 2000s in the United Kingdom.

Winehouse dated chef-musician Alex Clare (sometimes referred to as Alex Claire) in 2006, while on the outs with her on-off boyfriend and future husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. Clare famously sold his story to the News of the World, which published it under the headline “Bondage Crazed Amy Just Can’t Beehive in Bed".

Winehouse's parents and in-laws publicly reported their numerous concerns, citing fears that the two might commit suicide, with Fielder-Civil's father encouraging fans to boycott her music. Fielder-Civil was quoted in a British tabloid as saying he introduced her to crack cocaine and heroin.

During a visit with Mitch Winehouse at the prison in July 2008, Fielder-Civil reportedly said that they would cut themselves to ease the pain of withdrawal.

After an extended stay in Saint Lucia it appeared to show that Winehouse had gained weight and that her complexion was improved. In an October 2010 interview, Winehouse said she had been drug-free for three years, saying "I literally woke up one day and was like, 'I don’t want to do this anymore.'”

It did not last, recently Winehouse entered the Priory Clinic on 25 May 2011, where she stayed for one week.

Now she joins Ian Curtis, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain & Jim Morrison. We will for ever remember them young. R.I.P.

A bit about her from her Bio: In 2001, a friend introduced her to drummer Dave Heyes, who had recently finished a stint of gigs with Elvis Costello. After attending one of Maria’s gigs, Heyes quickly became a fixture in her band. In 2005, Maria came across producer John Kettle (Tansads/High Holy Days/The Marble Index). Together, they recorded a three-song demo. “Once I was in the studio and heard the magic of my music coming to life, I knew that this was where things were going to change forever,” Maria says. Within a few months, Maria had five major record labels and publishers interested. She set up a showcase in London and traveled there with the band.

“The sound was bigger and better than ever before. From there I got a fantastic reaction from the labels who wanted to hear more.” In the summer of 2006 Maria and Dave established the indie label JTC Records, and they released the single “Love Of My Life” which went on to receive national airplay. Soon after this Maria returned to the studio to record her debut album “Landslide”.

A frequent visitor, but not a daily commuter on the London Underground thankfully, I often get the feeling I could be on an elaborate film set.

London's underground railway system, known as the Tube, has featured in several films. The plot of the 1998 film Sliding Doors hinges on whether Gwynneth Paltrow's character catches a particular Tube train or not. Bulldog Jack (1934), Manhunt (1941), The Good Die Young (1954), and 28 Weeks Later (2007) all include chase sequences across underground tracks.

A number of horror films have also used the subterranean network of tunnels as an atmospheric location, most notably the John Landis hit An American Werewolf in London (1981), which contains a famous scene set in Tottenham Court Road tube station, and the 2004 film Creep. The eerie 1973 horror Death Line stars Donald Pleasence as a Scotland Yard detective who traces a series of murders to cannibals living in the network's tunnels.

Excavations on the Underground unearthed an ancient alien spacecraft in Quatermass and the Pit (1967), and dormant dragons in Reign of Fire (2002).

The 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day features a secret MI6 facility in a fictional disused Underground Station called Vauxhall Cross. Another fictional station, Hobbs End features in the 1967 science fiction film Quatermass and the Pit. Shaun of the Dead features the fictional Crouch End station.

London Lady is the 3rd track on side one of Rattus Norvegicus (alternative title The Stranglers IV) is the first studio album by The Stranglers, released on 17 April 1977. The album was originally to be entitled "Dead on Arrival" but was changed at the last minute. It was one of the highest-selling albums of the punk era in Britain, eventually achieving platinum record sales.

The album's title is the taxonomic name for the common brown rat. It was produced in one week by Martin Rushent, and was basically a snapshot of the band's live set at the time.

The first 20,000 copies of the original vinyl release included a free 7" single, containing "Peasant in the Big Shitty (live)" and "Choosie Susie". I have a copy in my loft. Two singles were taken from the album: "Grip", and "Peaches" (released as a double A-side with the non-album track "Go Buddy Go"), which gave the band their first major hit single, reaching No.8 on the UK chart.A remastered version of the album was reissued on CD in 2001, including these three additional tracks.

Your local library is a great place to check out a better way of doing your pastimes or learning a new skill.

Learning techniques to paint, draw, photograph or film help you with some inspiration. I would have loved to see some of this ladies watercolours, or see how they have improved after getting a helping hand at the local library.

Some artists are using their skills, maybe learnt in libraries to help in the fightback over cuts. Below is the start of a compelling account from 'Artists of the Resistance', a bunch of folks who clearly think libraries are worth fighting for:

Unison, a local campaign for library and public services, concerned locals, political activists from a couple of different parties and library users previously unaware and needing no encouragement to join in.
Stalls were out, petitions offered, placards home made and more familiar were all present, children and their parents were chalking a giant ‘Save Our Libraries’ on the square floor, balloons in the air, a local author, local press, students, young, pensioners, activists, library staff, union members, authors, all ages, all backgrounds assembled and we knew we had alot of work to cover faithfully the atmosphere and the passion of this event.

You probably like me receive recommendations from Amazon and the like, introducing me to things to buy similar to the things I already have purchased. The effect of this is that we are recommended to listen to, watch or read more of the same.

In a library it is easy to walk in for a book on the Great Western Railway and walk out with a biography and a gluten free cook book as well, via the checkout desk (now fully computerised) of course.

I dont know if this man had been looking for this book, but his body language, holding this book at arms length revealed something extra. It is a racy title.

How did a 19 year-old, middle-class, Catholic girl from Munich become Hitler's mistress and what kept him faithful until the end of their lives? Was her appeal sexual, domestic, political - or did he really love her? Eva Anna Paula Hitler née Braun (6 February 1912 – 30 April 1945) was the longtime companion of Adolf Hitler and for less than 40 hours, his wife.

Braun met Hitler in Munich when she was 17 years old while working as an assistant and model for his personal photographer and began seeing him often about two years later. By 1936 she was a part of his household at the Berghof near Berchtesgaden and by all accounts lived a materially luxurious and sheltered life throughout World War II.

She was quite racy by all accounts and enjoyed make-up and nude sunbathing.

As the Third Reich collapsed towards the end of the war, Braun swore her loyalty to Hitler and went to Berlin to be by his side in the heavily reinforced Führerbunker beneath the Reich Chancellery. As Red Army troops fought their way into the neighbourhood on 29 April 1945, she married Hitler during a brief civil ceremony: she was 33 and he 56. Less than 40 hours later they committed suicide together in a sitting room of the bunker, she by biting into a capsule of cyanide.

Strangely, the German public was wholly unaware of Braun until after her death. You would need several super injunctions these days to manage that!

The traditional library was always a place you could find a good textbook. Today often the internet is touted as a replacement for good quality text books.

The Internet is very much like television in that it takes time away from other pursuits, provides entertainment and information, but in no way can compare with the warm, personal experience of reading a good book. This is not the only reason why the Internet will never replace books, for books provide the in-depth knowledge of a subject that sitting in front of a computer monitor cannot provide.

In an increasingly rushed and hurried world, the sound-bite is becoming the currency of knowledge rather than in-depth experience, only obtained by research, study, seeing and doing. The internet is being often used as an excuse to stock less textbooks in libraries.
