Germany, Wedel, “Iceland Poppy”, native to sub-polar regions of Europe, Asia, the mountains of Central Asia, East-Siberia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Northwest-Canada & Alaska. They were first described by botanists in 1759, the wild species blooms in white, yellow & orange-red. All parts of this plant are likely to be poisonous, containing, like all poppies, toxic alkaloids. The petals have a crinkled silk appearance & are thin enough that much sunlight gets through making them seem brighter than the usual flower. The poppy seeds are very tiny, it takes approx. 200,000 units to make an ounce, 28,35 Gr.

Great Britain, London, Queen's Guard, ”…in all sizes”.
Buckingham Palace, sentries on the picture are from the „1st Battalion Welsh Guards”. The Queen's Guard is the name given to contingents of infantry & cavalry soldiers charged with safeguarding the official royal residences in London. Since the reign of “King Charles II” in 1660, these have been in charge guarding the Sovereign Palaces; they are not purely ceremonial & are fully operational soldiers. Until 1959, the sentries at Buckingham Palace were stationed outside the fence; this stopped succeeding an incident involving a female tourist & a “Coldstream Guardsman”, belonging to the oldest regiment in the Regular Army in continuous active service, originating in Coldstream, Scotland in 1650 when General George Monck founded the regiment. Due to the continued harassment of tourists & sightseers, the guardsman kicked the tourist on the ankle as he marched. The tourist made a complaint to the police & despite sympathy; the guard was confined to barracks for ten days, shortly after the sentries were moved inside the fence.
Each foot-guard is on duty at their post for 2 hours, every 10 minutes, a guard will come to attention, slope their arms & march across their post, generally around 20 paces in total. This is usually repeated four-five times before the guard halts, shoulders the arm & returns to standing at ease. Guards are not permitted to stand relaxed whilst at their post.

Germany, “Altes Land”, the region sited downstream from Hamburg on the south-western side of the river Elbe is an area of 143 square km reclaimed marshland, spanning parts of Hamburg & Lower Saxony. “Altes Land”, which means "old country", however, it is a mistranslation of the original Low Saxon “Olland”, which originally had nothing to do with "old"; it stems from Holland & refers to the area's original colonization by Dutch settlers in the 12th Century which drained the land & cultivated it.
Drawbridges, windmills, the unique design of the elongated villages, everything still reminds of the former settlers. Many of the richly-decorated half-timbered “Altländer” farmhouses are over 300 years old. Inscriptions, geometric patterns of mosaic tiles on the facades & magnificent decorative traditional gates are considered as status symbol of wealthy farmers.
The region is the biggest contiguous fruit-producing region in Central Europe, about 77% of the trees are apples, 13% are cherries. The fertile land led to the development of a culture dominated by farming, a special kind of villages where the farmyards are set along a street with the land directly behind them.
Tourism plays a major role, predominantly during the cherry blossom in May & apple blossom late May/June. However, unfortunately parts of the plantations are slowly being displaced by residential developments. Many of these new homes are then sold or rented to commuters who work in Hamburg.

Great Britain, London, “The Shard” & a tower of the “Tower of London”, a few architectural centuries between the two.
The Shard is actually Western Europe’s tallest building, a 95 storey skyscraper, from 68-72 floor the observatory at a height of 245 mtr & floors 73-95 the spire, the 309,6 mtr high building opened to the public on February 2013. It is a vertical city with luxury offices, restaurants, a 5-star Shangri-La hotel, exclusive residential apartments & the capital's highest observatory; its crystalline façade transformed the London skyline. The dramatic façades of angled glass panes reflect sunlight & the sky, so that the appearance of the building changes according to the weather, daytime & seasons. The building features 11,000 panes of glass, with a total surface area of 56,000 square mtr.
The Shard was designed by Renzo Piano in 2000, the Italian architect who created Paris’s Pompidou Centre
