Germany, Heidelberg, “Alte Brücke”, Old Bridge, the first Heidelberg bridge was built by Prince Elector Karl Theodor, 1742-1799, which explains its official name "Karl-Theodor-Brücke".
The four preceding bridges were wooden constructions; altogether, the bridge was rebuilt nine times, more than likely victim of flooding, fire & ice. Carl Theodor was the first ruler to have constructed a stone bridge which was erected here from 1786 to 1788 supported by 8 posts. Well preserved is the medieval bridge gate on the town side, originally part of the town wall. Baroque tower helmets were added during the erection of the stone bridge in 1788. The West Tower contains dungeons, whereas the East Tower holds a spiral staircase. The double-armed bridge gate comes from the late Middle Ages, the towers served the bridge keeper as an apartment & in 1945 both rooms above the gateway were refurbished as artistic apartments.
Located 80 mtr up the “Königstuhl” hillside & dominates the view of the old downtown, the castle ruins are among the most significant Renaissance structures north of the Alps & has only been partially rebuilt since its demolition in the 17th &18th centuries. The earliest castle structure was built before AD 1214 & later expanded into two castles around 1294; however, in 1537, a lightning-bolt destroyed the upper castle. The present structures had been expanded by 1650, before damage by later wars & fires, in 1764 another lightning-bolt destroyed some rebuilt sections.
The Queen's Guard is the name given to contingents of infantry & cavalry soldiers charged with safeguarding the official royal residences in London. Since the reign of “King Charles II” in 1660, these have been in charge guarding the Sovereign Palaces; they are not purely ceremonial & are fully operational soldiers. Due to the continued harassment of tourists & sightseers, the guardsman kicked the tourist on the ankle as he marched. The tourist made a complaint to the police & despite sympathy; the guard was confined to barracks for ten days, shortly after the sentries were moved inside the fence.
Each foot-guard is on duty at their post for 2 hours, every 10 minutes, a guard will come to attention, slope their arms & march across their post, generally around 20 paces in total. This is usually repeated four-five times before the guard halts, shoulders the arm & returns to standing at ease. Guards are not permitted to stand relaxed whilst at their post.
The Coldstream Guards is the oldest regiment in the Regular Army in continuous active service, originating in Coldstream, Scotland in 1650. The Coldstream Guards Band is the incremental company that is used for public duties & maintains the traditions of the 2nd Battalion.
The grouping of buttons on the tunic is a common way to distinguish between the regiments of Foot Guards. Coldstream buttons are arranged in pairs & a star of the garter is marked on their brassware. The regiment's formal title is Her Majesty's Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards; their nickname is “Lilywhites”.
All Guardsmen for public duties wear the “Home Service” dress tunic in summer or greatcoat in winter & bearskin with a red plume. The Coldstream Guards regimental band plays at Changing of The Guard, state visits & many other events. All of the regiments' musicians were trained as medical orderlies; however they now undertake a role in Nuclear, Biological & Chemical decontamination.

Great Britain, London, Harrods, Brompton Road reflection on one of Harrods shop windows displaying a pink & silver Rolls Royce. Harrods, a glamorous department store located in Brompton Road in Knightsbridge.
The store occupies a 20,000 m2 site & with over 90,000 m2 of selling space in over 330 departments making it the biggest department store in Europe.
Numerous of its departments, especially the seasonal Christmas department & the food halls, are world famous. However, visiting the food halls on many of my trips to London, I noticed over the years, that even the meat, fruit/vegetable, sweets & tea divisions are still of high quality, others have drastically reduced the assortment & quality, among them the fish & seafood division, the “fast food” counter have increased with average quality & prices like a Michelin three star restaurant, I guess because there are more tourists than serious shoppers & revenue has to come from someone.
The founder Charles Henry Harrod established his first business in 1824, at the aged of 25, the business was located south of the River Thames in Southwark. In 1849, to escape the vice of the inner city & to capitalize on trade to the Great Exhibition of 1851 in nearby Hyde Park, Harrod took over a small shop in the district of Brompton, the site of the current store; Harrods rapidly expanded, acquired the adjoining buildings & employed one hundred people by 1880.
However, in early December 1883 it burnt to the ground. Remarkably, in view of this catastrophe, Charles Harrod fulfilled his commitments to his customers to make Christmas deliveries that year. In short order, a new building was built on the same site.
On November 1898, Harrods debuted England's first moving staircase in their Brompton Road stores; nervous customers were offered brandy at the top to revive them after their ordeal.

Great Britain, London, Queen's Guard, ”…in all sizes”.
Buckingham Palace, sentries on the picture are from the „1st Battalion Welsh Guards”. Until 1959, the sentries at Buckingham Palace were stationed outside the fence; this stopped succeeding an incident involving a female tourist & a “Coldstream Guardsman”, belonging to the oldest regiment in the Regular Army in continuous active service, originating in Coldstream, Scotland in 1650 when General George Monck founded the regiment.

Great Britain, London, Queen's Guard, Buckingham Palace, sentry on the picture is from the „1st Battalion Welsh Guards”. Until 1959, the sentries at Buckingham Palace were stationed outside the fence, this stopped succeeding an incident involving a female tourist & a “Coldstream Guardsman”, belonging to the oldest regiment in the Regular Army in continuous active service, originating in Coldstream, Scotland in 1650 when General George Monck founded the regiment.
