Uganda, Kisima I, 25-11-2012, Nurse Beatrice Amuge listens to the heart of the baby of a pregnant woman on the island Kisimi 1 in Lake Victoria. Kisima 1 is an island in Lake Victoria near Jinja, Uganda. The island has no electicity. Most of the men on the island make a living as a fisherman, while the women stay at home. Because maternal health care and maternal health care information was lacking, a programme was set up by the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) and its partners Health Child, Cordaid and Text to Change via the Connect4Change consortium. In this programme, people from the community are trained as village health workers. In gatherings, they explain about health issues related to health care and show posters, videos and other material to illustrate their information. All mothers are encouraged to deliver on the main land, as the risk of complications is far less if they go to a hospital.

Uganda, Kasese, 25-11-2012, Computer teacher Davis Bulemu helps pupils to get know a computer at Saint Theresa Girls Secondary School, a school in rural West Uganda. The school started a programme in 2011 where teachers and students were trained in computer usage and where computers and powerpoint were used to liven up English classes. This programme is supported by Dutch ICT for development organisation IICD, together with Edukans, Computer for Schools Uganda and RWECO through the Connect4Change Consortium.

Freddy can now teach others to use organic compost for crops such as potatoes, but also maize. With the help of IICD, Freddy will be able to share his story with more farmers via ICT (such as internet).

With the help of the Heifer foundation and through local partner Coordinadora Rural, farmer Freddy learned how to create organic compost and other organic farming methods, that he now uses for all of his crops.

Clinical Officer Eileen Lirhunde takes a picture of an x-ray and then digitally sends it to a medical specialist in Dar es Salaam. She also sends notes so the expert can also get some background information about the case. Within a day, the case is then send back again to Lirhunde with treatment suggestions. A patient registers at ALMC hospital in Tanzania. The health worker at the front desk uses a computer to enter his data or to look up if he's been to the hospital before so she can help him quicker. The hospital uses a health management information system that can be used for patient registration, patient billing, storing patients medical records and ordering drugs from the hospital pharmacy. The only thing still done manually is entering patient data for health insurance. The next step is to also do that automatically.

Maasai parents wait in line to pay their children's school fees

Maasai parents in Kajiado, Kenya wait in line at the AIC Girls Boarding School. With the support of IICD and Edukans through the Connect4Change consortium, a system was installed that also includes a way for school administrators to keep track of payments. Maasai parents are often on the move, but in the beginning of the school year, they come to the school and pay the school fee for their children, which often includes boarding fees. Payments records will be kept digitally which makes it easier to see which parents already paid. The system will also help with keeping track of payments in terms, as many parents do not have the full amount at the beginning of the year. If payments are tracked better, this means that the school will increase its income which can then be spent on teaching materials and better facilities for the school.

The school is part of a programme to provide refurbished computers to schools throughout the country, trains staff to use them to prepare lessons, provides maintenance and collects obsolete computers from schools.
