I've photographed this bridge several times. Today, taking pictures from on the water, was the first time that I'd noticed that some of the piers were riveted steel, and clearly from an older incarnation of this bridge. The north end of the bridge is old timber trestle, the main span is steel girder, and the south end is welded steel supporting concrete girders.

The control building can be seen on the left, behind the bridge.

For barge traffic, the bridge swings toward the opposite shore. For small boats, there is a draw on the right.

The timber sheathing on the trestle supports is pointed on the upstream side, to act like the bow of a boat, parting the water and, with luck, flood debris.

In a flood situation, the water may cover the bridge, and trees, timber, and other things come down the usually docile creek and lodge against or batter the supports.

There are flora and fauna around a shallow, relatively clean, and flowing creek like this that I don't see around the deeper lazier waters of Spring Creek or the cypress ponds in the area. There are jewel blue damselflies with ink black wings and fishing spiders scurrying across the water.

It may be a good thing that a spot like this takes some effort to get to.

I'd climbed down the east bank of White Oak Bayou to get pictures of the old railroad bridge near Hogan and I-45. I took a different route up, a very overgrown route. The occasional trail (perhaps a figment of my imagination) passed debris, from the flooding and, perhaps, from those who had found some sort of shelter in the shade of this thicket. I'm not sure to which category this old Bible (not KJV), belongs, but it was stiffly open to Joshua 18. I left it in its place, untouched, took only this photograph.

I had to be on the other side of the lake to check a project. A friend on that side has kayaks and we went out on the lake and headed toward the railroad bridge.

Familiar to most Houstonians, seven virtually identical through arch bridges (overpasses) cross the Southwest Freeway (US 59) between the 610 loop and downtown. Built in 2000, they are one each at Hazard Street, Woodhead Street, Dunlavy Street, Mandell Street, Graustark Street, and one each for the north bound and the south bound lanes of Montrose Boulevard.
